King Kylian: Mbappe's greatness gives PSG blueprint for ... (ESPN.co.uk)

Kylian Mbappe was the undoubted star of PSG's win vs. Real Madrid, but his teammates showed the unity needed to finally win the Champions League.

Against Manchester City at home in the group stage they worked hard, played deep and fought, but they still conceded lots of chances and shots. Never had the Parisians had so many shots in a European knockout game before in their history. They were helped by the tactics from Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, who set up his team far too deep and played right into PSG's hands. Nonetheless, there is an overdependence on him in this team, as Mbappe has been involved in 50% of the goals scored by the PSG in all competitions. The numbers speak for themselves, of course: 39 touches in the box for PSG to seven for Madrid, 1.87 expected goals to 0.10, 21 shots to three. He is always a threat, a danger, and he inspires fear in his opponents.

Champions League odds: Betting favorites, expert picks ... (Sporting News)

Get a step ahead with a rundown of each 2022 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 matchup with odds, picks, and stats ahead of the knockout stage.

That was the same Sporting side that was outscored by a combined 9-3 against Ajax in the group stage. Benfica has (to mixed results). A famous 3-0 win over Barcelona earned the Portuguese side a place in the knockouts, but there are also ugly defeats to Bayern, plus a pair of 3-1 losses to Porto and Sporting in league play. The problem, however, with taking Atletico to win straight up is the massive draw potential in this match. While Ajax is making headlines for its goalscoring prowess, backed by Sebastien Haller's sensational form, this team has hardly conceded either — a +64 goal differential (69 scored and five conceded!) through 22 Eredivisie matches is absolutely unheard of. Quite simply, Atletico is underperforming in front of net, while Man United is overperforming. Juventus had a horrendous start to the season, but the Old Lady is on a 10-match Serie A unbeaten streak, and the arrival of Dusan Vlahovic will cure all lingering goalscoring ailments. This matchup will be less entertaining — Chelsea played to a trio of 1-0 results among its six group-stage matches, winning two of them. Sadly, that's not a good way to make a profit, as the odds on him scoring aren't worth the risk that comes with picking a goalscorer. Liverpool was a perfect six-of-six in the group stage, but the Reds were leaky at the back, conceding six goals over the stage of competition. The under is a compelling play here with both team defenses likely showing up in a first leg that neither side will want to fall too far behind. That certainly may happen with elite attacking firepower on both clubs, but the odds discount each side's defensive prowess. Tread carefully in this matchup, as a meeting of two title-worthy sides this early is certain to create chaos.

The league was too easy for them, and then they would play gung-ho football against Real Madrid and get punished. It's alright whipping up Norwich every week, and that's their bread and butter. Evergreen striker Luis Suarez will hope to renew his rivalry with the men from Old Trafford, but Antoine Griezmann is yet to figure since his return from a thigh injury. From a British perspective, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City sealed their spot in the last 16 with a game to spare, meaning their 2-1 defeat to RB Leipzig in their final group game mattered little, although Champions League holders Chelsea had to settle for second spot in Group H after drawing 3-3 with Zenit in their last group fixture. The group stage of the competition came to a conclusion in early December, with Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona the big-hitters who exited prior to the round of 16, dropping into the Europa League as a result. For Dortmund, it represented just the second time in a decade they had failed to progress from the group stage, with five-time winners Barca a mainstay of the latter stages in 19 of the last 20 campaigns. Sometimes, their problem is that the Premier League is too easy for them. When Man City are buying players, they're not even making a massive difference. They're not becoming weaker. Teams are becoming stronger.

In the Champions League you cannot relax.” Sporting will be “dismissed as sacrificial lambs” but Real Madrid would not have done this in Lisbon, she added. City have been favourites to win the Champions League before, said Luke Edwards in The Telegraph. They were “equally impressive” on their way to the final last season, but the “ultimate prize, the club’s Holy Grail”, slipped through their fingers at the last moment. Guardiola and City’s owners are “desperate to win in Europe”, Edwards added. This “statement” result – the joint-biggest victory by any side in the history of the Champions League knockout stages – has “further underlined why City are considered favourites to lift the trophy”. The margins are fine, we’ve seen that in the Champions League, but I think he [Guardiola] backs his players to get the job done this season."
