In the Champions League you cannot relax.” Sporting will be “dismissed as sacrificial lambs” but Real Madrid would not have done this in Lisbon, she added. City have been favourites to win the Champions League before, said Luke Edwards in The Telegraph. They were “equally impressive” on their way to the final last season, but the “ultimate prize, the club’s Holy Grail”, slipped through their fingers at the last moment. Guardiola and City’s owners are “desperate to win in Europe”, Edwards added. This “statement” result – the joint-biggest victory by any side in the history of the Champions League knockout stages – has “further underlined why City are considered favourites to lift the trophy”. The margins are fine, we’ve seen that in the Champions League, but I think he [Guardiola] backs his players to get the job done this season."

Phil Foden's reinvention means Man City should go Erling Haaland ... (Manchester Evening News)

Phil Foden impressed at the centre of Man City's attack in the 5-0 thrashing of Sporting CP in the Champions League.

"Without that anticipation and belief that the ball is going to come to him, he doesn't get the opportunity to show his skill right in-front of goal. He's got that instinct to just hang in there even if the chance looks like it might disappear. There would be no point in chucking a random striker into the mix who can't get involved in build-up play. "His goal wasn't one where he just lost his man and was completely unmarked to tap home. "It was a good night for Phil after some mixed conversation about the season that he's having. The little drag-back at Norwich, the feint to sit the goalkeeper down against Sporting.

Sporting Lisbon 0-5 Manchester City: Bernardo Silva nets twice and ... (Daily Mail)

Riyad Mahrez gave Manchester City the lead against Sporting Lisbon following a Kevin De Bruyne pass; The goal was initially ruled out for offside against ...

So when Sterling collected a pass from Silva in the heart of Sporting’s half, he wasn’t thinking about that miss but how to eradicate it. In the 17th minute, Mahrez – who is arguably in the form of his life in a City shirt – took a corner from the right that was only half cleared, looping up in the air to the left of the penalty area. Sterling found space on the flank and cut the ball back to Silva, clearly relishing his more advanced role and perhaps a chance to take chunks out of this opposition. A corner directed towards Rodri goes up in the air. Sterling had just missed a header from a good position, but this is a City team brimming with confidence, individually and collectively. Silva looked to have completed a rare hat-trick with an even rarer header from a De Bruyne cross after 50 minutes, but this time VAR smiled on Sporting and disallowed his effort. There, Foden got the better of Coates once more and as good as ran the ball into the goal, before shooting. City got a break via VAR for their first goal and were helped by a deflection for their fourth but it would be wrong to suggest Sporting were unfortunate. Every time City got into the final third they looked like scoring; and on a majority of occasions, they did. Whatever the weaknesses of Sporting Lisbon, to come away and win by five was a remarkable achievement. It helped that City’s league game prior to this was against Norwich, allowing Guardiola to rest key men, but this was a statement performance from the tournament favourites. It was as if they had done quite well to keep it to this rout of a scoreline.
