Michell and co-writers Richard Bean and Clive Coleman have created a beautifully written and deftly executed period piece full of quirks and impressive attention to detail. Dame Helen Mirren — soon to be seen as Golda Meir in a new biopic charting the life of the former Israeli prime minister — gives one of her best performances in writer-director Roger Michell’s very last film. Despite his best intentions, he soon involved in one of the most daring art thefts in British history.

The Duke Review - IGN (IGN)

The Duke sets up a hilarious social satire under the guise of a comedy crime caper, with buckets of British humour.

The Duke reminds of that, as well as how brilliant a good old-fashioned caper can be. Throw in a dash of stock footage to ground the drama in reality (while giving it an old cinema newsreel feel) and it adds up to a charming, hilarious, and over-the-top caper that will keep you laughing the whole way through. The Duke begins with a glimpse of the resulting court case, with Broadbent in full swing as he makes a comic spectacle from the dock. He’s more Feathers McGraw than The Pink Panther’s Phantom. And when the police later suggest that he’s a “trained commando,” it’s enough to make Bunton choke on his cuppa. Based on a true story, Bunton allegedly broke into the National Gallery in London, pilfered Francisco Goya’s Portrait of the Duke of Wellington, then hoofed it back to his home in Newcastle, where he hid the painting from his wife in the back of a wardrobe… But the truth is often stranger than fiction, and in this case, Bunton’s absurd true-crime tale has all the hallmarks of a classic Ealing comedy.

The Duke | Movie Review | Metropolis Japan (Metropolis Japan)

Kempton Bunton was a soapbox revolutionary taxi driver who dabbled in a variety of minor socialist causes and constantly annoyed his wife.

He was caught (while returning the painting), leading to a most amusing courtroom battle, as he uses his time in the dock as the public stage he has long sought. He even did a bit of jail time for his broadcasting beliefs (they can do that in Britain, you NHK scofflaws). Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent) was a taxi driver and soapbox revolutionary who, to the constant annoyance of his long-suffering wife (Helen Mirren) dabbled in a variety of minor socialist causes, chief among them Britain’s compulsory BBC licensing fees.

"He also allowed, without being dogmatic in any way, everyone to be the best possible versions of themselves and it was always a very, very happy place to be. there was never any sort of tension, stress or anxiety, everything seemed to flow very smoothly, and he allowed it all to happen, as well as being positively creative and imaginative in a brilliant way. "And that only comes with him being absolutely brilliant at his job, which is the hardest job. Ironically, he would be defending the BBC to the hilt, as I would be. "I think Kempton would be on the side of the BBC and fighting as hard as he could against the culture secretary - if you can call her that. So maybe he will inspire more ordinary people to stand up again and make their presence and ideas felt."

For more from the biggest stars in TV, listen to the Radio Times podcast with Jane Garvey. Bunton was a forthright and principled man who led a campaign for free TV licenses and also fancied himself as a writer – and the film explores his role in the case through an excellent performance from Jim Broadbent. But luckily that means there's plenty of opportunities to watch the film on the big screen, with it having been given a wide release throughout the country.

No. 6 Duke demolishes Syracuse in historic fashion in Mike ... (USA TODAY)

Mike Krzyzewski's final trip to the Carrier Dome resulted in Duke's biggest win ever over Syracuse, 97-72.

The Blue Devils tied a season-high with 15 made 3-pointers, including four from Banchero, who had only hit five on 17 attempts in the last seven games. "We've been a much more mature team," Coach K said of his team's current five-game win streak. "For the past few weeks, I've been putting unnecessary pressure on myself," Banchero said. Saturday's game was also the second-largest margin of defeat at home in Boeheim’s tenure. Coach K and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim entered the game 1-2 in terms of all-time career wins. "It's a historic day," Wildhack said.
