But neither he nor Caoimhín Kelleher made a save before the two custodians had to step up. It is stark contrast to the FA Cup which offers prize money that increases round by round, with this season's winners guaranteed a minimum of £3.4m in prize money. While most cup finals usually see the winners walk away with millions in prize money, the Carabao Cup offers a significantly reduced boost to the winning club's coffers.

Liverpool win Carabao Cup final after beating Chelsea in penalty ... (The Guardian)

Liverpool won the first domestic silverware of 2022, triumphing over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final 11-10 on penalties after a pulsating match at Wembley.

Kai Havertz, who impressed in the No 9 role, had the ball in the net twice only to be denied by offside flags – the second in the second period of extra-time – while the borderline call had come in the 109th minute. But Klopp’s team had their opportunities, too – particularly in the second half of normal time. With celebratory red flares having been lit by their fans, VAR ruled that Virgil van Dijk had been in an offside position and interfering with the Chelsea substitute Reece James when Trent Alexander-Arnold dropped in a free-kick and before Sadio Mané had headed square at the back post. On his previous two visits to Wembley for finals, Klopp had lost in the 2013 Champions League with Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich and the 2016 Carabao Cup with his present employer to Manchester City – that one on penalties. Liverpool had the opportunities to have won inside the 90 minutes and they were horrified when Joël Matip had a goal disallowed midway through the second half. The boyhood Liverpool fan gives the impression that nothing fazes him and he made two fine saves during the 90 minutes; one early on to deny Christian Pulisic, the other to keep out a near-post flick from the Chelsea substitute Romelu Lukaku deep into stoppage time.

Kepa Arrizabalaga gamble backfires as Chelsea come unstuck in ... (Evening Standard)

Kepa Arrizabalaga missed a sudden death penalty as Liverpool secured the Carabao Cup after a shootout that went all the way down to the goalkeepers.

First he was down low to block Naby Keita’s shot from the edge of the area. It was also a second Wembley defeat for Tuchel after losing last year’s FA Cup Final to Leicester – and ends Chelsea’s hopes of a clean sweep in cup competition. First choice Edouard Mendy was picked instead, despite playing in none of the rounds leading up to the final. He has proven himself an outstanding keeper in shootouts – but was unable to stop any of Liverpool’s 10 spot kicks from their outfield players. The Senegal international more than justified his inclusion with a series of saves, including a stunning double stop in the first half. Later, a fractional offside denied Romelu Lukaku an extra time winner.

Liverpool win Carabao Cup as Chelsea's Kepa misses decisive ... (Largs and Millport Weekly News)

Caoimhin Kelleher won the battle of the second-choice goalkeepers against Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga as Liverpool claimed a record ninth League Cup after ...

It was the sign for Tuchel to send on Lukaku and Timo Werner, for Mount and Pulisic, with Werner the next to be flagged offside as Havertz headed home. Liverpool’s triple substitution saw Diogo Jota, James Milner and Harvey Elliott introduced but it was the impressive Diaz and then Van Dijk who forced Mendy into two saves, before Kelleher denied Lukaku with virtually the last kick of added time. Penalties were almost inevitable after two of the Premier League’s top three sides went blow-for-blow over 120 minutes with disallowed goals and the odd on-pitch confrontation adding to the occasion.

Kepa Arrizabalaga skied the final penalty over the crossbar to hand Liverpool the first trophy of the domestic season.

- Werner – 6 Kepa was unable to save any of Liverpool’s first 10 penalties, but nor did Kelleher have any answer to Chelsea’s initial spot-kicks. Havertz’s strike in the 20th minute of extra time was also disallowed, though this time his transgression past Van Dijk was much more clear cut.

How much will Liverpool earn for winning the Carabao Cup? (FourFourTwo)

The Reds will need to find extra room in their trophy cabinet but will see barely any impact on their finances.

And that's for the whole club, not per player. That's right. That's because the winner of the Carabao Cup takes away a measly £100,000 in prize money.
