In a moment of rare misfortune – for both sides – the ball squirted out the back of the French pack and spun away from Tarel. It was picked up by Scotland’s Christian Townsend and he dived for the line. McClintock slotted home the conversion, but, with less than a minute to go, it was all too late and France took a, relatively easy win, 17-30. McClintock, back after his HIA, then knocked the ball over for the conversion and the score was 10-23 after 61 minutes. However, pressure told eventually and, from a right touch line out, the pack drove the ball across the face of the visitors’ post in a series of rucks and mauls. Five minutes later, it was honours even as France came roaring back into the game and forced a penalty inside Scotland’s 22. Early on, that looked like a distinct possibility as a penalty award was sent to the line well inside the French 22.

Scotland v France report: Les Bleus show their class with emphatic win (The Offside Line)

France took another step towards the Six Nations title with a six tries to two demolition of Scotland at Murrayfield.

Penaud kicked ahead and the bounce out-foxing both Hogg and van der Merwe, allowing Danty to sail in for the try. He worked a brilliant scissors with Harris who had men lining up on his left, but the pass was in front of Stuart Hogg and the full-back couldn’t quite collect. There wasn’t much for the home support to get animated about during this first 20 minutes, but they were brought to their feet when Grant Gilchrist stole line-out ball near his own 22 and Jaminet misjudged Ali Price‘s box-kick, handing Duhan van der Merwe then Chris Harris a chance to gallop in open prairie. Scotland held on – just – this time although possession was scrappy and Finn Russell‘s snap clearance was charged down, leading to an accidental offside scrum for Scotland from which they conceded a free-kick, and France then demonstrated their solidity on their own ball to launch a scything attack. Certainly, the atmosphere among the French supporters in the ground suggests that there is a belief about this team which hasn’t always been evident during their more capricious eras. A SOBERING experience for Scotland. They were a distant second best here.

The first Six Nations Round 3 clash took place today at Murrayfield – find out how the game played out.

But within two minutes the French stretched their advantage with another excellent try when Moefana went over the line after an offload by Cyril Baille, who did superbly to keep the attack alive. Jaminet once again added the extras. The hosts were not be denied though. Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend, already without Jamie Ritchie, Rory Sutherland, Matt Fagerson and Jonny Gray through injury, lost another key man on the eve of the game after Hamish Watson tested positive for coronavirus. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Scotland and France added a fifth try just before the hour when Penaud went over on the right. Finn Russell got Scotland off the mark in the 11th minute with a penalty from right in front of the posts after France were penalised for offside.

Scintillating France outclass sorry Scotland in bonus-point rout to ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

They came in their droves, Tricolour-bedecked fans thronging Murrayfield in numbers not seen for many years.

Scotland come into this fixture on the back of a seismic win against France in Paris last year, too. He links up with Harris on the switch, who travel up to the Scotland 22. The ball is eventually freed and France spring into life. Scotland need to up the intensity. He cannot link up with Fickou, however, and Dupont puts his pragmatic cap on to restore order, kicking deep to give Scotland the lineout on their own 22. Danty regathers as he's chasing in behind and he scoots down the right touchline to score. If Scotland are still a work in progress, France are the finished product. If that was bad, worse followed immediately after the break when Scotland were attacking on France's 22 but a hesitant Price was stripped. Two tries down and second best in virtually every aspect of the game, Scotland suddenly threw caution to the wind, with immediate results. On a beautiful spring day, the French took over, both on and off the pitch. But the breakaway try after half-time must have been a blow for the players.” Despite Scotland's much-lauded strength in depth, their fringe players struggled to make an impact, with the notable exception of Rory Darge, who marked an excellent home debut with a try.
