A Prayer for Volodymyr Zelensky (unknown)

History has found the Ukrainian president, and his courage is remarkable to witness.

It’s what his predecessor, Viktor Yanukovych, did in the aftermath of the revolution in 2014, leaving behind his palace filled with exotic cars and ostriches for the safety of Moscow. The enduring failure of Ukrainian democracy has been the gap between the code of behavior that applies to the elite and the one that the rest of the country must follow. There’s no airlift awaiting his fellow residents, so rather than accepting the perk of his position, he’s suffering in the same terror and deprivation that they are forced to endure. Most human beings would rather not have their enemies hang their corpse from a traffic light, the sort of historic antecedent that is hard to shake from the mind. After Germany invaded France, Charles de Gaulle made his way to London. Or to take a more recent example: Afghan President Ashraf Ghani boarded a helicopter out of Kabul the moment he heard a rumor that the Taliban had entered the city. But in life, as in the fictional version he created, Zelensky, slightly diminutive and gravelly-voiced, has been subjected to the most intense stress test of character. He created and starred in a comedy series, Servant of the People. His character, a high-school history teacher, is surreptitiously recorded by one of his students as he passionately rants against the tyranny of corruption in his nation.

In light of this, Mr Zelensky recorded a message to Russians to refute the notion that Ukraine is the aggressor and that he is any kind of warmonger: “They told you I ordered an offensive on the Donbas, to shoot, to bomb, that there’s no question about it. What are we going to fight over, and with whom?” When doctors there saved him, he chose to go back to Russia despite certain risk. Volodymyr Zelensky has made an unlikely journey from being a TV satirist and comedian to the president of Ukraine – and now, a national hero, as his country faces invasion from Russia. It became incredibly popular and a political party of the same name was set up in March 2018 before, on 31 December, Mr Zelensky announced his candidacy as one of 39 candidates.

“But today he is the hero,” he said of Zelensky, describing him as the pride of the nation. Before the war, Cherniha was “not a fan” of Zelensky, he said. The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. “The people have really come together, and such a unity can’t possibly be defeated.” Among them was Valerii Valiiev, 17, a college student who left his dormitory earlier this past week and has joined the war effort by contributing to the molotov production. A case study in effective communication during war and a profile of courage on a level I can’t recall.” The contrast could not be more stark,” Clarke added in a subsequent tweet. “He will never acquiesce when he thinks something is wrong.” As a wartime president, however, Zelensky has risen remarkably to the challenge. Zelensky, 44, at times downplayed the threat of Russia crossing into Ukraine and at others warned of Russia seizing Ukrainian cities. In Ukraine, there’s precedent for Shuklin’s screen-to-reality sense of confidence: President Volodymyr Zelensky was an actor and comedian, whose only political experience before getting elected was playing the role of Ukraine’s president in a satirical TV series. Ukrainians felt he was weak in his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and too quick to seek compromise with Moscow.

It comes after the leader shared a video of himself and his team stood outside of the presidential administration in Kyiv last night, insisting he was “defending Ukraine” and had not fled. The move has raised eyebrows and could be interpreted another signal that China is not prepared to offer explicit support to Moscow over the conflict, after it chose to abstain in a UN Security Council vote condemning the Ukraine invasion rather than siding outright with Russia. The Ukrainian president has rejected an offer from the US Government to evacuate himself to safety, reportedly telling Washington he needs “ammunition, not a ride”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has survived a night of Russian assaults on Kyiv and instructed people not to believe “fake news”.

But from the President to the women and men in the streets, their courage and resolve is awe-inspiring. “The main armoured columns approaching Kyiv are still some way off. The attack on Kyiv come as support for Ukraine ramps up across the world. It’s nowhere near enough, but we send them strength and solidarity." It’s nowhere near enough, but we send them strength and solidarity— Nicola Sturgeon (@NicolaSturgeon) #StandwithUkraine🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 February 25, 2022 “I think that will be a great cause of concern for President Putin and rather points to the fact that there was a lot of hubris in the Russian plan and that he may be awfully advised." Mr Heappey said the situation was “very grave” but that the fighting in the capital was so far confined to “very isolated pockets of Russian special forces and paratroopers”. "But from the President to the women and men in the streets, their courage and resolve is awe-inspiring. He also signed it “to direct the drawdown of up to an aggregate value of 350 million dollars (£261 million) in defence articles and services of the Department of Defence, and military education and training, and to make the determinations required under such section to direct such a drawdown”.
