Far north MP Jamie Stone spoke of his love of reading as he signed a parliamentary motion marking 25 years of World Book Day.

Many bookworms dressed for World Book Day today and sent in their 'sheflies' to the Lynn News, while we've also been out and about.

Ella Turner, 10, who attends Fairstead Primary School dressed as Cedric Diggory from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling. Scarlett and Ethan Thomson dressed up as characters Nash and Jada from a book called The Cheese Miner on the Moon written by Snettisham author Damian Carruthers. Pupils Seren and Logan Gooderson from Denver VC Primary School dressed as protagonist Rapunzel and the character hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon by popular children's author Cressida Cowell.

Photos show some of the best World Book Day costumes (via Falmouth Packet, South Wales Argus and Worcester News).

Adele Dickeson sent in a photo of her youngest son Edward's costume as The Northern Farmer. Jodie Greenslade, of Newport, shared a photo of Max Greenslade, aged eight, who dressed up as Norman the Slug with the Silly Shell. Olivia Quinton of Usk sent in a picture of Oakley Quinton dressed as Aladdin. David Walliams is one of the most popular children's authors of the next generation, having written popular books Billionaire Boy, Mr Stink and The Boy in the Dress. This young book lover's chosen novel of 2022 appears to be Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The charity event is held annually in the UK and Ireland on the first Thursday of every March.

I truly believe that all children should see themselves represented in books, to see characters from different backgrounds embarking on adventures, exploring fantastical worlds, or, like Esha in A Dinosaur Ate My Sister, inventing a time machine! The winner will have their design used on library cards across Kirklees. That’s why it’s so important for our classrooms and libraries to promote books which reflect a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. Research from 2021 shows an increase in children’s books featuring a minority ethnic character. In England, 34 percent of children of primary school age are from an ethnic minority background.
