He probably finished my career a couple of years early, he's the reason I've got screws in my knees and groins!" "It was the first time in a long time we haven't scored a goal and we weren't sharp enough today. "The other players have got a lift from him.

Villama Preview: Aston Villa v Southampton (7500 To Holte)

Will diamonds be forever, or was it just a one-off? Steven Gerrard looks to lead Aston Villa past Ralph Hasenhuttl's hotter than hell Saints.

Villa are on the upswing, but Southampton are absolutely on fire as of late, averaging two goals a game over the run of 14. Southampton are regrettably good this season, which poses something of a concern going into the match. Consequently, this week’s opponents, Southampton, have not lost since traveling to the Midlands on January 15th, losing 3-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The switch in formation to a 4-4-2 diamond seems to have done wonders for a small, but consequential cornucopia of concerns, and the question this week now changes to whether or not we will see continuity, however momentarily, with this new setup.

He really showed his form of old and it was a pleasure to be in the stadium." "I thought his quality was of a high level. "Congratulations to Villa, they were simply better than we were. "We've been on a good run, but this defeat is massive. Calum Chambers, on the edge of the box, split the Saints defence with a cleverly judged lofted ball for Coutinho, who then found Douglas Luiz five yards out. Villa boss Steven Gerrard made two changes from the side that won 2-0 at Brighton last time out.

Aston Villa vs Southampton final score: Coutinho leads rout (NBC Sports)

Aston Villa hammered in-form Southampton as Philippe Coutinho played a key role to lead Steven Gerrard's side to back-to-back wins.

Missing Salisu at the back was a big blow as Saints looked shaky defensively and unable to keep their high press going. 3. Bad day at the office for flat Southampton: This was one of those games where everything went right for Villa and Saints looked sluggish and just generally had an off day. Luiz, McGinn and Ramsey did plenty of running and pressing to shut Saints down, while Coutinho floated in the gaps and caused havoc when he got on the ball. The 4-4-2 system suited them well and finally Ings and Watkins look like the partnership we all thought they would be. 1. Coutinho destroys Saints’ press: Villa used a midfield diamond to thwart Saints’ high-press and it worked a treat. The win was Villa’s second in a row and moves them on to 33 points.

Aston Villa player ratings vs Southampton: Watkins, Coutinho and ... (Birmingham Live)

Aston Villa 4 Southampton 0 - A huge win at Villa Park for Steven Gerrard as Watkins, Luiz, Coutinho and Ings all bag goals.

Against his former employers Southampton, Ings was booed with every touch he took and jeered in the warm-up, but he will have the last laugh as he scored his first goal at Villa Park for nearly five months. Come on, Ollie! He needed to break his duck last weekend and now he's got a couple under his belt he can look forward to a bright second half of the campaign. Luiz will have something to say about that and against Southampton, he was his composed self, a cool customer with a neat touch and even a finish to match too, as he scored his first of the season, stroking the ball into an empty net for Villa's second. Philippe Coutinho: A joy to watch when he spins on the half-turn, jinks in and out of those tight spaces and knocks those cute passes nobody else sees - Coutinho is starting to enjoy his football again and Aston Villa are the beneficiaries of that. He has predicted the playmaker to 'shine' from now until the end of the season before a decision is made on the player's long-term future at the club. Against Southampton's rigid 4-2-2-2, at times he struggled to find angles and pockets of space, but on the ball he used effectively and with purpose, never settling for the easy pass to boost those completion numbers. He was sure to sit and protect the defence as soon as Villa broke the deadlock through Watkins and provided a solid base alongside Luiz throughout. He notched his second assist of the season with a fine cross to Ings to sweep home. It's hard to review Villa's defensive options when Gerrard has been handed some tough luck in recent weeks with injuries and suspensions preventing his side from developing the relationships that are so crucial to the team's success in the second half of the campaign and beyond. He collected his first cross comfortably and that helped set the tone for another assured performance between the sticks from Martinez. He made a top save to deny Che Adams in the second half and will be delighted to have kept clean sheet number eight for the season. Matty Cash: A week after netting his second goal of the season, Cash was out to impress the Villa Park faithful this afternoon, bombing past the halfway line whenever he could. With three wins in their last four too, Ralph Hasenhuttl's side might have been full of confidence before kick-off, but Gerrard's men were up and at the Saints from the get-go.
