Apple is becoming too reliant on its M1 Mac chips (TrustedReviews)

OPINION: The transition over to Apple Silicon is almost complete, with the Mac Pro and a version of the Mac Mini the only surviving Intel-powered options ...

I do appreciate that transitioning over from Intel to Apple Silicon was a big challenge that required a lot of time and resources. Apple could even spring a surprise and introduce a new feature that would improve the user experience beyond a faster performance. Rumours indicate that Apple will finally give the MacBook Air a design refresh later this year, with a slimmer and lighter design, as well as adding more vibrant colour options akin to the iMac 2021. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is another laptop that’s in dire need of a design refresh. The 16-inch MacBook Pro also received a much-needed makeover in late 2021, now with a slimmer bezel and that divisive screen notch. After all, Apple is just as much of a fashion brand as it is a technology company.

A few more notes about Apple’s ‘peek’ performance (unknown)

Here are my quick-hit reactions to Apple's March 8 event, at which the company updated the iPhone SE and iPad Air, rolled out a brand-new Mac and external ...

Since this is the end of the era, I’d expect Apple to turn the page soon and introduce the first wave of M2-based Macs. The M2 will probably be a somewhat modest improvement—you can’t make a big leap in performance and energy efficiency like the M1 every time out. The M1 Max chip itself is intelligent about saving energy by shutting off unused elements, so there doesn’t need to be a micromanager at a high level trying to spread the load. And it will please a lot of people who want a bit more than the 24-inch iMac, but don’t need to spend $2000 on a Mac Studio and then find a display to use with it. While it’s true that an Apple silicon-based Mac could probably do all that work itself, it’s important to remember that the Studio Display is also compatible with Intel Macs, including models from all the way back in 2016. The Mac Studio could be seen as an attempt to let the iMac and Mac mini go back to what they were before, with the Mac Studio shouldering the load as the provider of computing power to people who want it. There’s a good reason the M1 Ultra wasn’t named something like the M1 Max Duo: it’s not two chips, it’s two complete systems-on-a-chip combined into a single package. You heard Apple’s John Ternus right: The M1 Ultra is the final chip of the M1 era. It’s also processing the audio being sent to it, creating spatial audio effects for the Studio Display’s speakers. But here’s why: That A13 is doing the work of Center Stage, scanning the wide-angle camera image for faces and scaling and moving the view so that people are always in frame. With an A15 processor inside, I’d imagine this SE will be on sale for a couple of years at the very least. One of these days, this design will fade into oblivion like the original iPhone SE design (based on the iPhone 5). But Tuesday was not that day. I’m more struck by the fact that the iPad Air’s specs show just how efficient Apple can be about standardizing hardware and re-using it across multiple devices.

Apple’s Slow March Toward MacPad Continues (unknown)

The new iPad Air gets a desktop-grade chip. Consider it a sign of things to come.

But the inclusion of the M1 in the iPad Air, a tweener of a device that was always more expensive than the most basic iPad and less powerful than the most souped-up iPad, means yet another Apple tab has been elevated to “PC” status. But next week, Apple will begin shipping a device that closely resembles a MacBook with a touchscreen. Will Apple ever ship a MacBook laptop with a touchscreen?

Not much has changed since the 2020 update to the small, least expensive iPhone. This time, Apple has stuffed the A15 Bionic processor inside, the same one found inside the iPhone 13 models. ‘Peek performance’ — Apple turns things upside down (unknown)

An event characterized by Apple's growing processor technology advantage points to a new future for enterprise tech.

This seemed to me to be an excellent way to celebrate International Women’s Day, which coincided with the date of this Apple event. Along with huge improvements in energy consumption, this is a step that puts Apple in position for a future defined by environmental stewardship and conservation of the earth’s raw materials. It gives Apple a desktop computer that absolutely competes with (and in many ways, excels) what you can expect from PCs at the same price, or higher. The industry will need to get used to it. But what you also get is a huge performance boost — 60% faster CPU performance and twice the graphics performance of the last iPad Air. Apple also pointed out that these iPads are twice as fast as the best-selling Windows laptops in the same (from $599) price range. Of course, machines that use less energy are cheaper to run, which makes a big bottom-line difference in any medium to large-sized business. * Apple is pretty much redefining the computer industry. At the high end, its products match or beat anything you can get from anyone else. Now, the industry tunes in to swoon over the architecture — and weep over lost opportunities as Apple moves its platforms far, far ahead of everybody else. Eagle-eyed readers may recall my review of a MacBook Pro equipped with that chip, which basically said the computer could deliver on any high-end task you can imagine. Think about flight crews equipped with iPads to replace the paper-based processes they used to do. The M1 Ultra delivers 90% higher multi-threaded performance than the fastest available 16-core PC desktop chip at the same power.
