Liverpool reach last eight of Champions League despite rare Anfield ... (Borehamwood Times)

Lautaro Martinez's goal inflicted a first Anfield defeat in a year on Jurgen Klopp's team.

With the game opening up Martinez had a shot deflected wide when he should have really have hit the target, although he made no mistake with his swerving 20-yard effort in the 61st minute. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi had said pre-match his side had to score in the first half and they set about their challenge with determination with their 3-5-2 formation and high-intensity press giving their hosts plenty to think about. Liverpool, who have not lost a European tie when they have won the first away leg – 37 times and counting – should have put the result beyond doubt as Mohamed Salah hit both posts in the second half.

Pep Guardiola criticises 'stupid' Kyle Walker over Champions ... (The Guardian)

Pep Guardiola has said he is 'still so angry' with Kyle Walker over the red card that has ruled the defender out of three Champions League matches.

Of course we had an incredible result in the first leg, we start 5-0, but it is not done.” “He deserved the three-game ban,” the manager said. Walker will serve the second match of a three-game suspension during the last-16 second leg against the Portuguese champions after lashing out at André Silva in a final group match which had no significance for City, who had already qualified.

Think back to Arsenal in the league. Mikel Arteta kicking off on Sadio Mane and then Jurgen Klopp from the touchline got the fans going, which got the players ...

Liverpool will need to be wary of that, but they always show their opponents respect and are all shored up at the back again. The manager may even have Roberto Firmino in mind, though he’s likely to err on the side of caution. In midfield, the return of Thiago Alcantara is a huge blessing, though he doesn’t tend to be rushed back from injuries. Leicester City’s away end in the League Cup came armed with all the worst that football chants can throw up about Liverpool as a city and a football club. If Inter Milan come flying out the traps tonight, I expect Anfield to get right up for this one. There haven’t been a ton of big atmospheres to hang your hat on at Anfield this season, but the crowd have always responded to what’s taking place on the pitch.

Despite Elimination, Inter Exit The Champions League With Heads ... (Forbes)

Moreover, with Serie A and the Coppa Italia still on the table, the doom and gloom that surrounded Inter at the beginning of the season could be greatly exaggerated come May. But despite the elimination, Inter demonstrated that they aren’t 100 miles away from making a deep run in the competition next year. But Liverpool were everything Inter weren’t in the first leg – incisive, sharp, clinical. Yet by the same token, he should’ve been shown a straight red for his tackle on Thiago Alcantara in the first half – a late and high tackle to the Spaniard’s knee that produced blood. All in all, Inter can leave the Champions League this season with their chest out, something that hasn’t been the case for the last three years. his lack of pace isn’t an issue in Serie A, so keep him fresh for the competition where he can make a difference.

Champions League quarter-finals: Bayern and Liverpool first teams ... (UEFA.com)

All you need to know about the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League quarter-finalists.

The 34-year-old has been diligent as successor to Hansi Flick, overseeing some fine displays and a cruise through to the last eight. He has maintained that form this season and is 2021/22 competition top scorer with 12 goals to his name. But it's what they do from now that will define the success of Julian Nagelsmann's debut season at the helm. Much like this Atlético side as a whole, the Portugal forward has grown into the campaign and is now a fixture in the side. Unai Emery's side have desperately missed the injured Gerard Moreno, but you have to give them credit for getting this far with their talismanic goalscorer reduced to a cameo role. When you throw in the fact they've already knocked out Juventus and are welcoming back Gerard Moreno from injury, they'll be confident they can go one better than their 2005/06 semi-final exit. However, they rolled back the clock with a classic display against United and might just be hitting form at the right time. The 30-year-old schemer passed 250 appearances for the club last season and remains a talismanic figure in their midfield despite the riches around him. They are so resilient and masters of backs-against-the-wall football, and will now look to add City to their recent list of English victims. How is it possible to lose at home to Sheriff, and then reach the last eight with a gargantuan performance against Paris? The route map helps explain. The former Mainz and Dortmund boss was a runner-up with Paris in 2020 before going one better with the Blues last season. And the man at the helm, Thomas Tuchel, has shown that he's one of the best around when it comes to motivating a team and keeping them goal-orientated from game to game.

Bayern 7-1 Salzburg (agg: 8-2): Lewandowski treble helps ... (UEFA.com)

Bayern were at their clinical best as they blew Salzburg away in this UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg, Robert Lewandowski scoring the first three ...

We had the luck that was completely missing in Salzburg. We could have gone 1-0 down after five minutes. Salzburg still became the first Austrian team to qualify from the group stage, and that's a great success. I think we started well and had the penalties and from there it just took off. The hosts cruise into the quarter-finals thanks to a near-faultless performance that will both restore confidence and relieve pressure in Munich – for now, at least. Serge Gnabry all but rubber-stamped Bayern's place in the last eight with a fourth goal before half-time but there was no let-up after the break. Lewandowski, not for the first time, spearheaded the goal glut for Julian Nagelsmann's men, converting two penalties after being felled by Maximilian Wöber twice then blocking a clearance from goalkeeper Philipp Köhn and tapping in to seal a quickfire hat-trick.

Liverpool vs Inter Milan review: Player ratings and analysis as ... (iNews)

Liverpool lacked their usual ruthlessness in front of goal but held firm against a determined Inter side to progress to the last eight.

That’s the only way Liverpool can be ruffled. Oddly enough, Martinez’s wariness of Van Dijk flipped from negative to positive in the second half. You could hardly blame Martinez for thinking “actually, I don’t really fancy this.” The Dutchman’s presence alone seemingly rendered Martinez incapable of moving his feet. Luis Diaz looked bewildered. And it was as though Klopp’s few minutes of tactical wisdom had an immediate effect on his players. It took a moment to work out what was happening before several Liverpool medics sprinted to provide assistance to a supporter. Reacting quickly — perhaps the only thing that can explain what happened next — the Egyptian side-footed onto the right post. And there was nothing he could do to prevent Martinez scoring the first of the night and pulling a goal back in the tie with a quite wonderful strike in the 61st minute. Going into the game, Martinez had scored 20 goals in 44 — a hat trick in his last, even — but Van Dijk is so big, so strong, so surprisingly quick off the mark for a guy of his sheer size – Van Dijk simply shouldn’t be able to accelerate that fast. Yet it is times such as these when the necessity of Virgil Van Dijk becomes clear. What a peculiar night at Anfield. One that certainly wasn’t uneventful.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE action is back this midweek, with Manchester City and Liverpool both in action.

With all four Premier League teams still firmly in contention to advance to the final eight and other mouthwatering ties taking place elsewhere in Europe, some sides could be forgiven for already having one eye on the next round which, luckily for fans, is not too far away. The Champions League final is scheduled to take place on May 28, having been moved from Saint Petersburg to Paris in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. As well as deciding which teams will face off in the final eight, the path to the semi-finals will also be determined in the same sitting, making it the final draw of this season's competition.

The Liverpool defence had generally got feet in, they had won the one-on-ones – the Martínez goal not withstanding. Martínez’s shot was a celebration of technique and audacity and his team had hope. Liverpool, though, saw the game out and, in the final analysis, they did so with a measure of comfort. Liverpool had hit the post through Joël Matip and Mohamed Salah, although they had struggled to unlock Inter in open play. The task was made easier when Alexis Sánchez was sent off almost immediately after the goal for a second bookable offence. Liverpool brought all-conquering form into the tie as they sought to confirm their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

BAYERN MUNICH 7-1 RED BULL SALZBURG: Robert Lewandowski netted a hat-trick as Thomas Muller scored twice in landslide win to book Julian Nagelsmann's side ...

The 23-year-old has been tipped to become one of the best defenders in the game after a fine few seasons at Leipzig but he has struggled at Bayern this year. The Austrian side were unfortunate not to win the first leg of this tie against an out-of-sorts Bayern and this result will be painful for a group of young players. Lewandowski has now won 23 of his last 24 matches in the Champions League for Bayern – with the first leg of this tie the only blotch on that record – as he missed last season’s loss to Paris Saint-Germain through injury. Indeed, such has been Bayern’s exploits in European competition in recent years, they had won 25 of their previous 27 matches and are undefeated in their previous 22 away matches in the competition. He has now scored 42 goals in 35 matches this campaign and is now within 13 goals of his record goalscoring season – 55 in the 2019/20 season, when he fired Bayern to the treble. Bayern had typically blitzed their way through the group stages of the competition, winning all six matches and netting 22 times in the process before the first leg draw in Salzburg last month.
