Wilson, according to a source, always planned on revisiting his concerns after the 2021 season. Had Wilson remained on Seattle's roster as of March 20, the Seahawks would have owed him his $5 million bonus. Wilson's trade comes 13 months after his frustrations with the organization bubbled to the surface. The Seahawks also are releasing All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner, another franchise cornerstone who was drafted on the same day as Wilson in 2012, in a move that will save them $16.6 million in cap space. That includes base salaries of $19 and $22 million, with $5 million March roster bonuses in each year making up the remainder. His trade will save the Seahawks $11 million in 2022 cap space. Wilson sensed he was going to have to move on, and if he did, he wanted to be going to a winning program. The other players involved in the trade still have to pass their physicals. Carroll said general manager John Schneider's standard response to teams inquiring about Wilson is that the Seahawks aren't shopping their quarterback, according to The (Tacoma) News Tribune. One league source estimated the total to be over a dozen teams. But in recent days, as trade talks with Seattle heated up, it became clear that Wilson was the Broncos' Plan A. The Broncos and Packers had not discussed a Rodgers trade this offseason. Enter the 33-year-old Wilson.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has been traded to the Denver Broncos while Aaron Rodgers has confirmed he is staying with the Green Bay Packers. While Rodgers will stay put with the only franchise he has ever played for, Wilson will head for new pastures after 10 years in Seattle. Russell Wilson makes blockbuster move as Aaron Rodgers commits to Green Bay
Wilson led the Seattle Seahawks to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, winning once, but had taken issue with being left out of personnel decisions.
With Wilson and his hefty contract heading to Denver, the Seahawks will now work on rebuilding what was one of the oldest rosters in the league last year. Wilson will be led by Coach Nathaniel Hackett, who was hired by the Broncos in January after working as an offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers for the past three seasons. The trade for Wilson was engineered by Broncos General Manager George Paton, and comes as the Denver franchise is set to be sold for the first time in nearly 40 years following the death of Pat Bowlen, the longtime team owner.

Only a trade of this magnitude seems a fitting goodbye for one of the greatest to wear a Seahawks uniform. Wilson is a part-owner of the Sounders and involved in just about everything the Emerald City has to offer. Plus, the Seahawks won’t have to sweat a new break-the-bank contract for Wilson when it’s time to re-up the quarterback once again. For a player of Wilson’s caliber, there was never going to be anything resembling equal value, but getting at least three or four first rounders for the best player in franchise history could have helped soften the blow to the 12’s. That would be difficult to stomach for the fanbase of any NFL team. However, this is a massive if – and the trade largely looks like a mixed bag as a result.
The NFL community reacts to the blockbuster trade that sent star QB Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos on Tuesday.
Trade for haul of draft picks and players is pending a physical and can't be announced until March 16.
The decision to go with Wilson was one of the smartest ever made by Carroll. He has two years remaining on his current contract and a salary cap hit of $37 million for the 2022 season. Overall, he’s 9-7 in the playoffs. The trade, though, was the culmination of more than a year’s worth of buildup. Not long afterward, Paton landed a Super Bowl-winning quarterback anyway, and one who’s five years younger than the 38-year-old Packers star. About an hour later, the Seahawks tweeted another clip from that movie in which Hanks’ scraggly, skinny character loses the volleyball at sea and hollers, ” Wilson, where are you?
Why are the Seahawks making this move? Are they getting enough in return, and what's next for them? Are the Broncos now a Super Bowl contender?
I'm surprised that the Seahawks were not able to get a more significant draft haul as part of a Wilson deal, but maybe that wasn't in the cards for a player in his mid-thirties who is about to get a massive extension. To get back to the question, though, the only really concerning part of all this for the Broncos is that getting Wilson might not even give them the second-best quarterback in their own division. And after the Seahawks spent a decade entering every season feeling like they also belonged in that conversation, the Broncos just took their chair. Given Carroll's near-pathological emphasis on competing, I can't imagine the Seahawks willingly tanking or giving up on a season, but I can see a universe where they try to win like it's 1979 and end up with a win total that would have been more in line with a 14-game season as a result. But if they can't find a replacement for Wilson and spend years wandering in the wilderness as a result, ownership will look back and wonder if they should have chosen Wilson over Carroll. The Texans had been regular contenders when they sent two first-round picks to the Dolphins for Tunsil, but despite having Deshaun Watson at quarterback, they went 4-12 and sent the No. 3 overall pick to Miami. The Seahawks had been a winner every year with Wilson, but with their starter missing time, Seattle will send the No. 10 overall pick this year to the Jets. In return for sending Wilson and a fourth-round pick, the Seahawks will receive two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-round pick and three players from the Broncos. After contributing further in 2020, the Broncos signed Harris to a three-year, $27 million extension last March. Harris has two years and about $17 million remaining on that deal, only $5 million of which is guaranteed. The San Francisco 49ers have one of the best rosters in football and just went all-in for Trey Lance. But the Seahawks were three games back and didn't have a first-round pick in 2022 as a result of the Adams trade. On top of all that, this move is likely a product of the decision to trade those two first-round picks for Adams, a deal I preferred for the Jets at the time. Those factors suggest that they were extremely likely to improve in 2022 if they were able to keep Wilson on the field. Part of that owed to Wilson's thumb injury, which caused the star passer to miss games for the first time in his professional career, but the Seahawks were also 6-8 with Wilson as their QB. The Rams just won a Super Bowl. The Arizona Cardinals have a 24-year-old with superstar upside as their quarterback.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers missed out on the chance to add future Hall of Fame quarterback Russell Wilson. Here's what that means.
Maybe he’s good, maybe he’s terrible, but either way, the Bucs need to give him a chance to show it. There is simply no chance the Bucs are able to win a Super Bowl with Garoppolo as their starting QB, so there is no purpose spending the money on him that could otherwise be used to sign talented role players. Although just rumors this offseason, there was still the glimmer of hope in Bucs fans that a big-name quarterback such as Rodgers or Wilson would find their way to Tampa’s starting lineup, but that seems like it is completely out of the question now.
The Seahawks reportedly traded Wilson to the Broncos for a massive haul.
Getting cute with the news that you just dealt your Super Bowl-winning star quarterback to another team probably isn’t the best move. Teams are not allowed to say anything officially about the trade until March 16, hence the non-direct reference. After it was reported that Seattle sent Wilson to Denver in a massive trade, the Broncos had some fun and Tweeted a gif of the movie Cast Away featuring the main character’s best friend, Wilson, who is a volleyball.
