Chelsea players fearful for future after UK freezes Abramovich's assets (The Guardian)

The atmosphere in the Chelsea dressing room was 'chaos' after Roman Abramovich's hopes of selling Chelsea were put on hold by UK government sanctions.

Supporters must be involved in any conversation regarding ongoing impacts on the club and its global fan base. The Times has reported that lawyers for the Raine Group had contacted all interested parties after the government’s announcement that “the process has been paused as the parties consider the implications of the developments and discuss the next steps with the relevant UK authorities”. “The government understands that today’s sanctions will have a direct impact on the club, its fans and the wider football pyramid,” Dorries wrote. It is understood the decision to impose sanctions on Abramovich, which was announced on Thursday morning, has not deterred potential bidders. But while the government is understood to be receptive to making some changes, it has been made crystal clear that Abramovich cannot benefit in any way. Neither the men’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, nor the women’s, Emma Hayes, is understood to be considering their futures at the club at the moment.

Chelsea will play without a shirt sponsor after Three announced they are suspending their £40 million-a-year deal with immediate effect.

The club can still fulfil fixtures and pay staff after being granted a special licence by the government but there are restrictions to rule out any possibility of Abramovich profiting from club transactions. We are currently assessing the situation with Chelsea FC." Therefore, we are offering connectivity packages to all Ukrainians in the UK, and those in Ukraine."

Chelsea FC granted licence to continue operating (GOV.UK)

Chelsea Football Club has been granted a licence by the government to continue operating following the sanctioning of owner Roman Abramovich.

As such the licence allows footballing activity and travel to continue which would permit the club to play European fixtures and the FA Cup. Under the current licence the transfer or loan of players in and out of the club is not permitted. The licence does not allow the club to undertake any new revenue raising activity including selling merchandise. It has been introduced to permit the club to continue necessary operations and can be modified if necessary. We have granted the club a licence so it can fulfil its fixtures, pay its staff and existing ticket holders can attend matches. It will deprive Mr Abramovich of benefiting from his ownership of the club and mean he cannot circumvent UK sanctions.

“While Chelsea has a sporting licence to continue trading as a soccer club, many brands will be wary of guilt by association. However, given the rate at which many brands are looking to dissociate themselves from the Russian state, some may be wary of continuing partnerships.” “We recognise that this decision will impact the many Chelsea fans who follow their team passionately.

Government Sanctions Roman Abramovich But Says Chelsea Can ... (PoliticsHome.com)

The government has announced that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is one of a number of Russian oligarchs now facing sanctions following Vladimir Putin...

“Our support for Ukraine will not waver. “Our priority is to hold those who have enabled the Putin regime to account. They should hang their heads in shame. Dorries added that Chelsea would be granted a "special licence" which would "allow fixtures to be fulfilled, staff to be paid and existing ticket holders to attend matches while, crucially, depriving Abramovich of benefiting from his ownership of the club". She tweeted: “To ensure the club can continue to compete and operate we are issuing a special licence that will allow fixtures to be fulfilled, staff to be paid and existing ticket holders to attend matches while, crucially, depriving Abramovich of benefiting from his ownership of the club.” A government document said Abramovich has had a "close relationship for decades" with Vladimir Putin which had "included obtaining a financial benefit or other material benefit from Putin and the Government of Russia."
