Emma Raducanu played some of her best tennis since the US Open to defeat Caroline Garcia at Indian Wells, while Andy Murray recorded his 700th ATP tour win.

The victory marks Raducanu’s first WTA 1000 win and she has scuppered a run of five losses in six matches. She immediately made the most of her high billing, breaking Garcia’s serve in the opening game. A reflection of the hype that still surrounds Raducanu came even before she played a single point.

But she rallied and, after a couple of traded advantages, pulled off her first break of the game to level the scores in the second set. She got off to the best start in her quest to do that, breaking Garcia again in the first game to give the impression that the tide was not going to turn. But her own response was superb as she dominated the final set to win her first match in the Californian desert and end a poor run of form which saw her win only one of her six games prior to this one.
