Jadon Sancho produced an unbelievable first touch during Manchester United's 3-2 victory over Tottenham in their crucial Premier League clash.

“I contacted him and his agent when he was 17 and tried to convince him to join us at Leipzig, in the end he decided to go to Dortmund and had a great time there. Sancho once again put in an impressive overall performance and has been a bright spark for his club since the turn of the year. The Irish defender then failed to intercept the ball in the air and allowed it to land at the feet of the United winger.

There was a time when trailing Manchester United at Old Trafford was one of the most daunting tasks in world football. There has been speculation that Rashford could seek a summer exit if he continues to see his game time limited, however, he needs to provide a lot more when he is given a chance in order to convince the interim boss. There were similarities with their pursuit of the veteran passer to the way in which they brought Ronaldo back to Old Trafford at the start of this season. There may be questions over his role in the long-term, but in the here and now, United remain a more dangerous team when the Portuguese superstar is in the lineup. But like so many times in his remarkable career, Ronaldo wasn't to be denied, completing his treble in the 82nd minute with a thumping header. However, United retreated deeper and deeper, unable to keep hold of possession and allowing the visitors to grow in confidence and with 20 minutes to go they were level for the second time when Sergio Reguilon's cross was turned into his own net by Harry Maguire

Man United found an unexpected Bruno Fernandes replacement ... (Manchester Evening News)

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant hat-trick for Man Utd as they beat Tottenham 3-2 in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Illness on Friday did account for Fernandes' presence in the side, however, and it can't have been an ideal build-up for United ahead of what was their most important game of the season. It can be a game of fine margins and had United managed to get Lindelof on one phase of play earlier they would almost certainly not have conceded in that manner. This is the level needed for the final nine games of the season, in terms of performance and mentality. Victor Lindelof was stripped and ready to come on at Old Trafford for around three minutes with United still leading 2-1, but the ball wouldn't go out of play and the change couldn't be made. Unable to get Lindelof on the pitch, Rangnick had to watch on as one of them - Reguilon - created an equaliser. On a day when Bruno Fernandes was absent it was good to see a Brazilian midfielder showing he can help fill that creativity gap that the Portuguese leaves behind.

The United number seven rose highest to meet Telles' corner nine minutes from time to power a header into the top corner for just his second United hat-trick and first since returning to Old Trafford in August. It took just 12 minutes for Ronaldo to make his mark with a stunning strike into the top corner from outside the box.

Without Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United it would have been difficult not just to win but also to draw the game." Man Utd 3-2 Tottenham: Ronaldo returns with hat-trick to stun Spurs (Football365.com)

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo fired in a superb hat-trick to give his side a valuable 3-2 win over Tottenham.

Nemanja Matic put Sancho behind Spurs’ backline and he cut across for Ronaldo to direct past Lloris as the visitors appealed for offside. Ronaldo, who had seen another snapshot saved, jinked away from Romero and leapt above Matt Doherty to meet a Telles corner with a thundering header in front of the Stretford End. Reguilon cut out a Sancho cross on a swift United break and Son directed wide at the other end from a smart Kulusevski pass. There was a guttural roar at the end of a match that was played in an intense, helter-skelter fashion from the outset. The hosts were staring down the barrel of an unwanted draw following Harry Maguire’s own goal, only for the 37-year-old to rise highest to head home a corner and send Old Trafford wild. United did not disappoint as star turn Ronaldo returned from injury with a bang, striking home superbly from 25 yards and adding another after Harry Kane had levelled from the spot.

Premier League hits and misses: Cristiano Ronaldo heroics save ... (Sky Sports)

Plus: Meaningful momentum continues to elude Antonio Conte as Tottenham follow up their 5-0 thrashing of Everton with a disappointing defeat at Old Trafford ...

The capitulation at the start of the second half against Chelsea last week lost them that game and a late implosion lost them this one, with Christian Eriksen afforded far too much time to cross with his left for the first before Nathan Collins' red card foul for the penalty. Moments later, Eriksen set the striker on his way to win the spot-kick for the second. With Eriksen's quality carving out opportunities, there's a good chance he'll add to that tally of 11 Premier League goals this season. But they also have a couple of individual talents who may just be inspiring them to another season in the Premier League. With five minutes of normal time remaining, they were moving out of the relegation zone. There were signs of the growing understanding between Dejan Kulusevski and Matt Doherty on the right wing. That was not an issue at Old Trafford, the game was just taken away from them in key moments. Reports that Ralf Rangnick believes Ronaldo is on the wane and not the man to lead the line for United next season surfaced this week. You'd have been hard pushed to find a single soul who thought the arrival of Luis Diaz would push even Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah into the shade. Meaningful momentum continues to elude Antonio Conte. After their 5-0 win over Everton on Monday, it was another defeat for his Tottenham team. To get in there with his head, it was really brave. Could he be the man to save their season?

Man Utd beat Tottenham: 5 things we learned as Cristiano Ronaldo ... (Daily Express)

MANCHESTER UNITED clinched a narrow win over Tottenham to boost their chances of finishing in the top four.

Conte relies on his wing-backs having the energy and willingness to be full of running down the flanks. It was no surprise to see the visitors blunted in attack. But Ronaldo's late winner undid all of their hard work in the second half. But at Old Trafford, Spurs struggled to get Sergio Reguilon and Matt Doherty involved in the first half. Cristiano Ronaldo was the hero for Manchester United after his hat-trick inspired Ralf Rangnick's side to a crucial 3-2 win over Tottenham to boost their chances of finishing in the top four. But at the same time, there is no end in sight of his individual errors costing United crucial points. From the left, he led United’s counter-attacks with direct runs in behind. Nearly 13 years later, the Portuguese produced an eerily similar strike against Tottenham that proved the 37-year-old has some magic left in his wand of a right foot. It was a moment Ronaldo desperately needed. Hugo Lloris flung himself at it but had no real chance of keeping it out. Harry Maguire cannot catch a break. Sancho sprung the offside trap, unselfishly squared it for Ronaldo who was never missing from six yards out.

Manchester United transfer news RECAP (Manchester Evening News)

Follow for all the latest Man United news, transfer rumours and analysis ahead of tonight's Tottenham fixture.

This small non-league club in the shadow of Manchester United and Manchester City are on the way up. As they stare down the barrel of one of the biggest matches in the club’s history on Saturday, with the prospect of a trip to the pinnacle of English football, Wembley Stadium, tantalisingly close, the message is clear and resolute. Manchester United have made initial enquiries about signing Lyon forward Moussa Dembele in the summer transfer window. "He resumed for training yesterday," Ralf Rangnick said of Ronaldo. "He trained the whole training session and I expect him to train today as well. Right now it's more likely he will not be available because if we risk him tomorrow he will more likely be out for the game on Tuesday (against Atletico Madrid). With some muscular issues, more if it's the calf, I tend to be careful. Rashford reacted so badly to his omission from the starting XI when Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood were absent it emerged he was considering his future on Monday morning. Edinson Cavani is also set to return after missing the last six games with a groin problem. Tuchel was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain in December 2020 but United did not approach him before he replaced Frank Lampard at Chelsea a month later. Cristiano Ronaldo will be available for selection after being forced to miss the derby at the Etihad with a hip injury. The deal isn't quite done yet and City are remaining cautious, but they are certainly in pole position. United are just one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal, but the North London club have three games in hand — meaning Ralf Rangnick's side can ill afford to drop more points. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and United all left in their wake.

If called upon he will therefore be under pressure to put on a strong display against Spurs, not just for the team's fortunes or even to worm his way back into Rangnick's plans, but to attract potential suitors too. The Lilywhites' form has been patchy since Antonio Conte took charge, and time is running out for them to find a streak of consistency if they are to mount a meaningful challenge for fourth place.

Like Doherty, struggled to find his range with balls into the box for Kane and co, though did play the cross that led to Maguire’s own goal. Further established his dominance in the midfield in the second half and can count himself unlucky to be on the losing side. Matt Doherty: Lucky not to be punished when caught under the flight of a long ball to Sancho. Wasteful with his delivery at times after a string of stellar recent showings. Came close to levelling the scores from a corner but saw Dalot head his effort off the line. Guilty of not closing Ronaldo down when allowing the striker to shoot from distance for the opener. Guilty of losing Ronaldo from the corner for the winner. Outmuscled and nutmegged by Kulusevski in the passage of play that led to Spurs’ penalty but put that to one side when grabbing an assist for Ronaldo’s second. Alex Telles: Conceded the penalty that led to Spurs’ equaliser when blocking a cross with an outstretched arm. Outmuscled by Kane in the build-up to the second equaliser. Improved his score when expertly positioned to head a Dier effort off the line. The under-fire centre-half slashed at a Sergio Reguilon cross to leave David de Gea stranded in goal.
