Leigh Wood knocks out Michael Conlan in 12th round to retain WBA ... (ESPN.co.uk)

Leigh Wood overcame an early knockdown to storm back to finish Michael Conlan in the 12th round and retain his WBA featherweight title Saturday.

Wood was getting tagged in the 11th, but he found the strength and courage under pressure to land a left hook that sent Conlan to the canvas. Wood was full of fire in the 10th round, giving Conlan a torrid time when the Irishman was sat on the ropes. Wood showed plenty of aggression in Rounds 5 and 6, but the cleaner and sharper punches came from the challenger. But the fight turned in the fourth round as Wood fought back, attacking with flurries of punches. Wood looked dazed for much of the second round, getting caught with clean left hooks as Conlan stamped his authority on the fight. For Wood (26-2, 16 KOs), 33, it was another late, dramatic win after he produced an upset to stop China's Xu Can in the final round last year in his first world title fight.

Class Leigh Wood deserves delayed celebrations after dramatic win ... (The Independent)

The WBA world featherweight title was at stake but as the aftermath of the fight showed, it wasn't the be-all and end-all of the night.

Wood was in another type of limbo; a winner of a great fight, a world champion, and he refused to celebrate. It was a combination of fatigue, hurt and the realisation of knowing, from a life in rings and gyms, that the fight was lost. It was ruled a knockdown; Conlan was fuming, Wood ecstatic and then the bell sounded. At the end of the fight he was exhausted and “fatigue was kicking in”, which he said at 6am in a defiant message on social media. Conlan was fighting a losing battle against Wood in the 85 seconds of the final round. The water was in his own corner, it was thrown at him by his cornermen each time he went back at the end of a round. It was raw drama and then the bell sounded for the last round. Conlan tried to finish the injured Wood. It was difficult to watch, but Wood is a tough man, a man shaped by rejection and hard, hard work in his role far from the glamour. At the end of the 10th it was clear that Wood was trailing, bleeding and could still be hurt, but he was in the fight. Back in the ring, Wood was bruised, confused and cut, and had fought too many rounds on his boxing instincts. Wood was out as he landed flat on his back, his head crashing off the canvas. Wood can finally celebrate and everybody witness to the epic fight can breathe.

Leigh Wood stuns Michael Conlan with dramatic 12th-round ... (DAZN News US)

Leigh Wood produced one of the most stunning comebacks ever seen in a boxing ring as he retained his WBA featherweight crown with a gutsy last-round ...

Vazquez had been down in the third session as the job looked too much for him, and he was finally put out of his misery two rounds later. There was a case for Rubio's corner perhaps rescuing him in the later rounds, but after enduring a one-sided beating, Rubio made it to the scorecards, where he was well beaten. In the ninth stanza, the ferocity of earlier rounds was absent as Conlan got behind his jab and showed glimpses of his amateur pedigree. Caoimhin Agyarko was too good for Juan Carlos Rubio as he dominated the Mexican from start to finish. Conlan started superbly as he floored Wood with a well-placed left hand at the end of the opening round. Wood celebrated frantically, but his jovial mood was soon watered down as he demonstrated brilliant sportsmanship to show compassion for his opponent.

Was looking to hold on. Conlan floors Wood as the bell sounds at the end of the first round! Leigh Wood makes his way to the ring. Conlan rocks Wood again in the second, the champion just about manages to stay on his feet. He forced Conlan onto the ropes for most of the round, cutting off any distance for Conlan to operate. Then midway through the round Conlan appears to catch Wood with a body shot that had the champion reeling a bit. Conlan finishes the round with a couple of body shots to end strongly. Wood finding most of his success by forcing Conlan onto the back foot, but the Belfast fighter is working the champion's body to good effect. Conlan lands some big shots on Wood who then responds, forcing the challenger onto the ropes and connecting with some heavy shots of his own. Conlan stifling the threat of Wood by using his jab and controlling the distance. Fair play to Wood for his muted celebrations, his primary concerns for the challenger. Good round for Wood who comes back strongly at the end of the 10th.
