Scotland recover from successive Six Nations defeats by overcoming Italy with a disjointed bonus-point victory in Rome.
Talk was raised again about the world champion Springboks coming on board after Italy went down to a 36th straight defeat.
“The problem with international rugby is that it is the result of long-term athletic development. Wales have never won a game in South Africa in the history of matches between the two nations, which date back to 1906. "I’m going to say something here. “That cannot happen. Nevertheless, private equity form CVC, who have taken a sizeable stake in the Six Nations, are said to want to grow the tournament and feel the pulling power of South Africa would create huge new commercial opportunities. “Unless there’s fundamental change, the drumbeat for South Africa to be in this is going to get louder.”

Also added five tackles and the same number of carries. Kept quiet at the breakdown. Add to that 12 tackles in 60 minutes and the Glasgow man will be pleased with his return. Won two good turnovers as Italy attacked and threw himself into contact in close quarters. In for Duhan van der Merwe, made a solid defensive read on Bruno early before finding Harris with a pin-point kick. A good jackal penalty too. Unable to stop Bruno getting offload away for Italy’s first try but little he could do as Capuozzo stepped for his debut score. In attack, the captain showed his counter-attack threat in the build-up to Scotland’s opener and the bonus point score. 1. Pierre Schoeman – 7.5 10. Finn Russell – 7.5 14 Darcy Graham – 7.5 15. They were under the pump at scrum time, but Mathieu Raynal was content with a warning. It is an incredibly tough place to come, and when you come here, you have to play your best. We got four [six] scrum penalties and we didn’t get a yellow card. You are never going to come here and have an easy game. “We lost a few territory battles which hurt us a bit, and swung the momentum. We’d have snapped your hand off for five points before the game. We are disappointed we didn’t get more out of that.” We wanted to disrupt them and we did that. “I’m a bit disappointed the referee didn’t allow us to scrum fully. We can be proud of what we did.” There was about 15 to go, 15-all, we are controlling the game, and we just made a couple of mistakes that allowed them into the game. France top the standings on 18 points after winning their first four games.
Scotland picked up a much needed win over Italy in Rome but will need to raise their game again for final Six Nations match against Ireland.
It wasn’t enough to salvage a bonus-point for the hosts but will have provided them with some sort of morale boost as they continue their battle to stay relevant in the Six Nations. Italy came back hard, and were given a helping hand by a loose pass from Russell which allowed Toa Halafihi to set top camp deep inside Scotland’s 22, but Price res cued the situation by reading opposite number Callum Braley’s pass for an interception of his own. When the scrum-half was eventually brought down 15 yards from glory, Graham appeared on the scene again to scoop up the ball and feed Finn Russell, who fired one of his trademark miss-three passes leftward for Sam Johnson to score in the corner.

Gregor Townsend has plenty of raw talent at his disposal yet consistency eludes his Scotland squad and that is a source of great frustration.
They won in Wales for the first time in 18 years, at Twickenham for the first in 38, and in Paris for the first in 22. The team they have come closest to beating since? There will be plenty riding on that one, particularly if Ireland do the job at Twickenham this weekend. Italy have not won a Six Nations game since a brilliant ransacking of Murrayfield in 2015. The Six Nations, and particularly this Six Nations, is the most ruthless competition in the game. That despite their heroism in reinventing Scottish rugby, they have it within themselves to do more, to go a step further, to seize tangible, indelible success. They have shifted the dial immensely in how Scotland are perceived, discussed and judged. Think of last year and the joyous, decades-in-coming triumph at Twickenham, and the maddening collapse that followed it against Wales a week later. Think of the head-scrambling symmetry of this term, the gusty Calcutta Cup triumph and the meek showing in Cardiff, seven days apart. France scored six tries at Murrayfield – no side has manage that in the Six Nations for 17 years. They have lost to England once in five matches. If three wins in a championship should not satisfy Scotland’s hunger, two leaves them positively malnourished.

We feel if we get our performance right, we're a match for any team in the world. Italy head coach Kieran Crowley: "We face a team that has shown its worth in previous outings of the tournament. Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend: "The tournament has not gone as we hoped or planned so far, that's for sure. Matt Fagerson returns from injury to start at No. 8, while Hamish Watson is also named in the starting line-up having missed the last match against France through coronavirus. We know that going away against a full crowd is going to be another test of who we are and that's what we aim to show this weekend." Who is the Italy v Scotland referee? Sam Skinner, 5. Scotland ran in five tries to secure a bonus-point win but didn't have things all their own way against an improved Italy side.
Italy win the possession at the lineout and are again on the attack in the Scotland 22 but precision at ruck continues to be an issue, allowing Matt Fagerson to win a turnover penalty. Italy run a nice pattern from the resulting scrum and make forty metres up the right touchline, but the Scottish drift defence is up to the job. The hooker pops inside to Price who is hauled down in the 22 before Russell flings a huge pass to the left for Johnson to score in the corner. A Garbisi chip over the top nearly causes some problems, but Scotland scramble and eventually force Garbisi to find a decent touch deep in the Scotland 22. On the right touchline, Graham pops to Turner who runs over a very weak tackle and is free and away on the fullback. The latest passive carry leads to penalty given away and Scotland will have a lineout in the Italian 22. It’s vital that the Azzuri score next, and will that be enough to give them a grab rail in the match? This out Scotland into the Italy half with Darge the latest to carry into the 22. They are up to the Italy 22 where Hogg joins the line and gets in a muddle with Steyn which sees the ball go forward. Ali Price has the ball and takes some sevens-style time to look for a gap and darts between the drifting Italian defenders before firing a bullet pass left to Hogg who runs in. The ball is sent right towards the wing for Capuozzo, who has been a livewire since his introduction, to grab it, step a bit and score his second. Lamaro has a big carry into the 22 and offloads to keep the attack going.

Townsend was disappointed with his team for conceding two late tries, with the Scotland coach urging his players to up their game against Ireland.
“It was inspired,” he said. “For a lot of that game, in defence, we were forcing turnovers from Italy, but it is disappointing that we were slipping off tackles towards the end and gave Italy two late tries. “This tournament is about winning, but you’ve got to learn at times as well,” he said.
