Baftas 2022

Bafta -- Jane Campion -- The Power of the Dog Bafta - Jane Campion - The Power of the Dog

glaring omissions aside, these awards were a triumph (unknown)

But what a night for Joanna Scanlan. No one who's seen gently provocative indie drama After Love, could begrudge the 60 year old Welsh actress her big moment.

In the name of the mother and the son and the holy smoke, may Jane now conquer Hollywood. Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. Wouldn’t that be a perfect way for this modern fairytale to end? In that it was roundly ignored at the Baftas and Oscars - and failed to set the box office alight - a part of her may have wondered if he was right. Like Peter, The Power of the Dog’s hero, Campion doesn’t go in for big shows of strength. Just as Chloe Zhao won Best Picture and Best Director for Nomadland, Jane Campion has pulled off the double-whammy with her alt-Western, The Power of the Dog. Like Zhao, Campion had never won Baftas in these categories before. In terms of the other major awards, “surprising” is not the word that springs to mind. Scanlan, in one scene, looks into the mirror and treats her wide-eyed reflection as if it were the most mesmerising of co-stars.

BAFTAs 2022: Best fashion on the red carpet (CNN)

Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell and Sebastian Stan were among the best-dressed stars at the British Academy Film Awards' red carpet.

(Like several other attendees, Lady Gaga was pictured hours later at the Critics' Choice Awards, which, though held in LA, staged a separate red carpet event at London's Savoy Hotel.) Lady Gaga wowed in dark shades, too, taking to the red carpet in an elegant emerald Ralph Lauren gown that took over 150 hours (and 50 meters of both velvet and silk taffeta) to produce. They were joined by the likes of Naomi Campbell, who wore a black Burberry dress with a square neckline and long cape sleeves.

She continued: "I would like to thank the women of this country who taught me what it is to be in this industry as a dark-skinned woman. "We need to donate, we need to pressure our politicians to continue to create some kind of a refugee safety and a haven here for people who are suffering, and figure that system out. "It was on roller-skates. "We all need to more than wear a badge," he said. The movie was also named best film. While Wilson made good on her promise to deliver a joke-filled ceremony, the night also reflected the devastation happening in the world, with BAFTA chair Krishnendu Majumdar delivering a message from the Ukrainian Film Academy and some celebrities using the platform to raise awareness about the war.

The Harry Potter star had her say on the author's most recent controversial comments.

In June 2020, she also tweeted her thoughts on an article that used the term “people who menstruate” rather than “women”, writing: "I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Hitting JK Rowling where it hurts.” The Harry Potter author also came in for further teasing from Wilson, who made a dig at her earlier in the night while presenting the Baftas.

And west London's own Lashana Lynch wins her first Bafta.

Denis Villeneuve’s thunderous sci-fi epic Dune pretty much cleaned up in the technical categories, winning for production design, VFX, cinematography, sound, costume design and score. As expected, Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog won Best Film, Campion won Best Director and Will Smith picked up Best Actor for King Richard, pipping the hotly tipped Benedict Cumberbatch. The Baftas, the British film industry’s gala night, brought its usual heady mix of starriness, celebration and creaky gags to the Royal Albert Hall last night.

Baftas 2022: The Power of the Dog wins best picture and director (The Guardian)

The film is seen as a successor to the likes of Parasite in moving from acclaim at Cannes, where it took three prizes, to a substantial showing at the Oscars, where it is up for four awards including best picture and best director. The awards were decided by the 7,000 members of the British Film Academy, which has undergone a considerable behind-the-scenes overhaul since the backlash to the lack of diversity in its shortlists two years ago. A raft of 220 new rules and regulations were brought in, including quotas for film-makers and the compulsory viewing by voters of at least 15 randomly selected titles in contention. Prince Andrew’s evening at Pizza Express in Woking also merited a mention, as did Oprah Winfrey’s TV interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the drama and tension of which Wilson praised. DeBose paid tribute to the film’s casting director, Cindy Tolan, who earlier in the evening triumphed in her category. This was blurred out in the pre-watershed TV broadcast, which Wilson had previously vowed would not prevent her from delivering as risque a ceremony as possible.

The biggest talking points from the BAFTAs 2022 (unknown)

Every snub, shock and surprise from the glitzy awards night in London – the BAFTA awards 2022, held at the Royal Albert Hall.

Wilson has offered fantastic value at the BAFTAs in the past when she’s shown up to present individual awards, but she had trouble stepping up to the big job tonight. Paul Thomas Anderson wasn’t the only winner missing in action. Before the Best Actor prize was handed out, she quipped mock-casually: “It’s nice to see men getting some work.” Still, there’s no denying it’s deserved, or the stirring sincerity of her speech. Branagh also lost out on the Best Original Screenplay gong to Licorice Pizza‘s Paul Thomas Anderson, who wasn’t there, which allowed Alana Haim and Radiohead‘s Jonny Greenwood to collect the trophy on his behalf. Baftas 2022: Best dressed stars from Lady Gaga to Sebastian Stan (The Independent)

Our favourite style moments from the 75th annual British Academy Film Awards.

The Serpent’s Ellie Bamber beauty look was one of our favourites, with her hair tied back with a chic bow. Mackintosh let the dress do the talking, accessorising it only with black stilettos, diamond jewellery and matching pink lipstick. Opting for old-Hollywood glamour, Lucy Boynton’s blonde hair was styled in short curls and she wore a striking red lip. Cumberbatch showed solidarity with the people of Ukraine by wearing a blue and yellow badge, the colours of Ukraine’s flag. She kept her hair simple, slicking it down with bobby pins and she wore black heels that wrapped around the ankle and held a white clutch. Her hair was styled in soft waves and she wore minimal jewellery. The supermodel stayed on-trend with her square-neck black dress and light-hued nail polish. The thigh-high split adds a fun touch. Balfe’s black floor-length gown is accessorised by powder pink drop earrings and a dramatic dark lip. Former England footballer Alex Scott dazzled on the red carpet in this floor-length, white cut-out dress. The singer went all-out emerald with her 2022 Baftas look. We love Ashton’s cape-style pink gown and on-trend black handbag.

Jane Campion's western took home the biggest awards on a night where Rebel Wilson joked about JK Rowling, Leonardo DiCaprio and Vladimir Putin.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine was at the forefront of many people’s minds during the ceremony. She wasn’t the only one to be the butt of a joke, though, with Leonardo DiCaprio also getting roasted by Wilson. Jane Campion’s gothic western The Power of the Dog, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a repressed rancher, took the top two prizes at this year’s Baftas: Best Film and Best Director. But it was Dune that won the most awards.

One of the only speeches of the night, admittedly, but one of the speeches of the night nonetheless. And now a short film where Rebel Wilson teaches us how to go to the cinema again. But the speech gets to run and run and run and run and run because nobody turned up and Rebel Wilson had to fling all her bras around to fill time. One of the speeches of the night. Cumberbatch is now standing in a crowd of people and, yep, he is definitely the colour of a saveloy. And, unless Rebel Wilson has found any more bits of underwear to throw at professional actors, the Baftas are done.

The look was completed with patent leather loafers and a number of pieces from Tiffany, including a Schlumberger Floral Arrows brooch from the Blue Book collection and a rose gold and diamond watch. She was joined on the red carpet by former EE Rising Star nominee Kelvin Harrison Jr., who fought off the British chill with a chic black overcoat worn over a classic Burberry suit. Opting for a fresh, undone approach to hair and make-up, Buckley brought the glamour with the help of some seriously enviable high jewellery from De Beers' Talisman, Arpeggia and Adonis Rose collections. Cut with an elegant strapless silhouette, the dress featured a painterly meadow scene and bright summer sky. A former BAFTA nominee and presenter at this year's awards, Florence Pugh eschewed the traditional gown in favour of a Carolina Herrera mini dress with pinky powder-pink train. The look was finished with a coordinating feather bag and glamorous platinum blonde waves.
