I went 10-pin bowling with the kids this weekend and my style is similarly unorthodox on the lane. Then it is a house of cards beneath him. There have been loads of twists along the way, plenty of teams written off throughout the league only to come back from nowhere. By the final fortnight, we had to win each of our last three games — and handsomely too, given our inferior goal difference. This is what they do to each other: continue pushing and pushing. To put this crazy season into context: I tipped Brentford for relegation hours before they beat Burnley on Saturday and that result has changed everything. Whenever I was at a club trying to reach the Champions League or fight off relegation, you would always be studying the table and fixtures. Suddenly there are three games left and you have to win them all. We would always overestimate, which is only natural for a competitive group of players. Mark Hughes had an interesting concept at Stoke City, which I thought was quite a good way of incentivising the squad. It is human nature to look at the table. All that is talked about on a daily basis at training grounds.
Everton 0-1 Wolves by James Nalton at Goodison Park ... A CONOR COADY goal and a Jonjoe Kenny red card saw Everton's life in the lower reaches of the Premier ...
A second for the visitors looked more likely than an equaliser. Everton host Newcastle on Thursday night as they begin to make up these games in hand. The former Liverpool youth player rose between Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey to head past Pickford with just four minutes gone in the half. Captain Seamus Coleman was involved in an altercation with Joao Moutinho while Jordan Pickford and Daniel Podence clashed in the area at a corner, but these were isolated incidents outside the football itself. It was an otherwise unremarkable half of football, but that was to change in the second period. There was nothing to show at the end of this first-half effort, even though there were a couple of half-chances.
Everton were beaten 1-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers at Goodison Park on Sunday but here are some of the moments you might have missed from the game.
After the second call for treatment, the 26-year-old even turned to the Gwladys Street to make a hands-up ‘sorry’ gesture, but that just seemed to make matters worse with the angry and frustrated home crowd who were incandescent by the time he ultimately made way for Daniel Podence, after what seemed to be delays of more than the three minutes of additional time that eventually went up on the board at the end of the first half. The visitors kept the ball with a run of over 20 passes without a tackle going in from a home player - and their run was only ended by a rash challenge by Doucoure that gave up a free-kick in a dangerous area from which they almost doubled their lead. The former Watford man – described by Lampard as “one of the best midfielders of his type in the Premier League” – enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign but like many of his team-mates, he has struggled for form of late.

He hangs in the air, but you've got to put the ball in the box. I don't think the manager who's coming in is going to be as soft. But put the ball in the box and the man is the best finisher there's ever been. I don't see Everton going somewhere and getting a 'wow' result and that's the problem they're going to have. He's the best header of the ball in the world. He gets a hat-trick on Saturday and everybody's going mad, but put the ball in the box and Ronaldo will score goals. But he just played it in and the lad's there to tap it in. Look at Norwich's fixtures: Brighton away, Burnley at home, Newcastle at home, Tottenham on the last day of the season when they might have nothing to play for. Everton have got to win three matches, but where do they win the three? I think they're the ones to go. I'm looking at Everton's fixtures and the way they're playing and I think they're in big trouble. Everton have got to go and win that game now - a draw's no good.
Fans now have genuine fears Everton could be relegated after an eighth defeat in nine Premier League matches during 2022 leaves Frank Lampard's side outside ...
Those struggles weren’t in the spring though and if it does go to the final day, unlike those aforementioned ‘Great Escapes’ of ’94 and ’98, Everton are away to Arsenal, the fixture they’ve taken the least points per game from in Premier League history. The first was a real-life ‘Roy of the Rovers’ story as a Blues team full of characters – they proved their mettle the following year by beating Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in the FA Cup final – came back from 2-0 down to triumph 3-2. If Everton are to survive then it looks like it could well be with much fewer than the traditional 40-point safety barometer and will be more down to the ineptitude of others than any sort of remarkable survival bid from themselves. Should we be encouraged by the Blues home-grown hero’s confidence or are he and his team-mates just blind to the facts of a situation now staring the rest of us in the face? Somehow, Everton survived three separate opportunities over the past fortnight for Burnley to leapfrog them in the table and put them into the relegation zone before they even kicked-off against Wolves but following Watford’s 2-1 victory at Southampton – a ground where the Blues, without a Premier League away win since August 28, fell to a sorry defeat less than a month ago – only goal difference currently keeps them out of the bottom three. We can attempt to shield our kids from many things and there’s a lot of issues in the news right now that put the fortunes of football teams into context – in recent weeks, I (probably along with millions of parents across Europe) have been asked by my teenagers to provide definitive assurances that there won’t be a Third World War – but when they see Everton losing week after week, it becomes ever more difficult to sugar-coat any ripostes.
Conor Coady's brilliant header earned Wolves a second win in the space of four days at Goodison Park. The skipper rose highest to expertly glance home Ruben ...
Podence, who replaced Hwang in the early change, also shot wide from distance as Wolves enjoyed an improved second period. If things took a while to get going in the first-half, the second made up for it, as Wolves began on the front foot and were rewarded. Hee Chan Hwang’s early departure, having taken a whack from Kenny and tried to run it off, was the main talking point of the opening stages.
Everton went down to another calamitous defeat as they lost by a single goal to Wolves yesterday slipping ever closer to relegation as a result.
In addition, other results didn’t go Everton’s way further compounding the consequences of this defeat. However, providing as consistent, balanced and solid a base as possible will surely help. And, after this latest disaster I think it will now take a miracle for Everton to survive as this set of so-called football players lack any of the qualities needed for a relegation fight.
This contest, against Wolverhampton Wanderers, was decided by Conor Coady's header four minutes after half-time. Everton, who finished the match with 10 men ...
Dele was an increasing influence on the game, meanwhile. There was an element of spice threaded through the game, right from the Hwang episode. What of Pickford in the opening half? Everton’s task grew harder when Kenny was sent off following two cautions in three minutes. He was barely needed. And their failure to take advantage gave Everton a glimmer of optimism in the last of four minutes of stoppage time when Moutinho tripped Coleman on the 18-yard line. They are a tough nut to crack and Everton's task became even more demanding when playing a man down. Andros Townsend, on for Gray, sent the dead ball travelling the wrong side of the post and Everton’s last hope of rescuing a point disappeared. Coleman took issue with a few Wolves players for a perceived injustice around the same time and, later in the half, the sight of Podence and Jordan Pickford squabbling while waiting for a corner epitomised the teams’ fractious relations. The South Korean forward was up and down like a jack in a box, genuinely hurt after sustaining a blow but hell bent on trying to continue. When an Everton player in possession lifted his head, then, the view was repeatedly filled with a bank of old gold. Everton collected nothing from the first half of a five-day Goodison Park double header – and must now dust themselves down in time for a visit from Newcastle United on Thursday.
Frank Lampard has been distancing himself from the mess at Everton ever since his first defeat. They need coaching inspiration, not excuses.
Eddie Howe (1.56) has waved the same “magic wand” Lampard continues to protest is not available in the Premier League – and it would be foolish to put all that down to money instead of coaching and problem-solving. The Tottenham shellacking necessitated a formation switch to a three-man defence that engendered a vague improvement – although the bar set on Monday was dreadfully low. Wolves merely had to be efficient and organised to coast to victory. They understood it before I arrived because they had been on a long run without a win,” said Lampard after a crushing defeat to Tottenham in his fifth league match. There would be no shame in admitting, publicly or privately, that the challenge initially presented is both far greater than first thought and something he was never prepared for. I’ve come into the club when they were on a run of results that’s left them in the position we’re in. A club in constant search for greater meaning and identity has been psychologically self-impaired for decades. But nor were those defeats: four in a row without scoring under Lampard; more overall than every Premier League club bar Watford and Norwich. Everton have scored barely a goal a game while conceding close to two. “I have come to a situation where we have to get better in a lot of things. The Lampardian Transition will never be beaten but those 12 months out of management seem to have been spent painstakingly developing a new interview technique. No longer is Lampard indelibly tethered to the viral monster he helped create. His latest method is more fluid, free to manipulate and manoeuvre as the situation demands.
NATHAN PATTERSON was once again left out of Everton's squad yesterday as Frank Lampard's side were defeated by Wolves in the Premier League.
“Maybe it will turn in our favour but all we can can do is work. We brought him in for a reason and what Nathan will feel from myself and the staff is a real engagement and desire to work with him. Here's what Lampard has said about Patterson: "In my role unfortunately you have to make decisions.

Wolves claimed a 1-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League.
“We need to give them [Everton] credit for what they did. “We prepared well for it. “We knew a team like that, when they lost 5-0, would come in the beginning.
"They trusted that Goodison Park would make a difference. Instead a Merseysider did: Conor Coady, a former Liverpool player and lifelong fan, sealed Wolves' ...
These fans are some of the most loyal and passionate in the business but, above all, they are knowledgeable. "The scoreline was slender but, for all that Frank Lampard argued otherwise, there was a gulf in class between these clubs. They cannot keep clean sheets, have run aground creatively — they are now without a goal in four Premier League matches — and remain consumed by a fragility that prevents players from converting desire into belief. "They were imperilled by a fourth consecutive league defeat and by results elsewhere. "As soon as the final whistle was blown, Anthony Gordon slumped to the turf and sat forlornly. They have gone four consecutive league games without a goal, have no settled starting XI or formation, and have lost 15 of their past 19 Premier League games.
Chairman Bill Kenwright and owner Farhad Moshiri will match the donation, making a total of £500000.
Everton has said it is providing support to Ukrainian defender Vitaliy Mykolenko, who joined the Toffees in January. Mr Kenwright said images of the conflict were "heartbreaking" and the money will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal. Everton FC has said it will donate £250,000 to support Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion.
Everton are to donate £500,000 to support the humanitarian fundraising effort for those affected by the current Ukraine crisis.
The toll this war is exacting on Ukrainian families is horrendous. “Our donation to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is the start of a campaign to promote and support the fundraising efforts of the Disaster Emergency Committee for Ukraine." “Football has an incredible power to unite people and we are eager to do everything we can to show our support for the innocent victims of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We are all praying for peace - but we are also determined to help the humanitarian effort right now in a bid to save lives.
Everton recruitment under Farhad Moshiri has been "particularly miserable" as the owner has had his "trousers taken down" by agents says Graeme Souness.
The squad has been left with significant holes, as the defence is in need of major upgrade, the midfield is too light, and there is a lack of goals after injury robbed Dominic Calvert-Lewin of form. In his Sunday Times column, the former Liverpool man writes: “Everton are also one of a long list of clubs where the owners have had their trousers taken down by agents. Everton recruitment under Farhad Moshiri has been “particularly miserable” as the owner has had his “trousers taken down” by agents says Graeme Souness.

Barrett-Baxendale said: "Monday’s result at Tottenham was a chastening experience. "We have already witnessed the impact a partisan support can have on our performances and results here – notably during the visits of Brentford and Leeds – and we need that level of backing again this afternoon. In a statement published on the club's official website, Barrett-Baxendale said: "You will be aware that we took the decision to suspend our partnership agreements with our Russian sponsors – which was undoubtedly the right thing to do – and we believe our newly restructured commercial team can fill the gap that decision creates.
Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Hwang Hee-chan had to be replaced in the 16th minute of the match against Everton.
The forward’s latest problem seems to be an impact injury on the back of his left thigh. In fact, Hwang’s apology made matters worse, prompting loud jeers for the 26-year-old from the Everton supporters. The Goodison crowd reacted furiously to Hwang, who tried to apologise to the home fans for delaying the restart of the match.
At Molineux, last November, Wolves deservedly won this fixture 2-1 with two first half goals, a header from a corner by Kilman and a lovely dink of a finish ...
If we can keep this group together for a while then we could see the start of something big. The 3 points were vital, the goals a boost and many of the performances a tonic! Certainly, with the energy and togetherness displayed from midweek, there is no reason why we can’t reverse some of those less than encouraging stats …… and get us going again away from home (we are placed 4th in the premier league ‘away’ table)! I’m certain that our supporters in attendance will be in a better frame of mind today, and why not. So who do you pick— Neves just shades it I think, he ran the midfield and made everything seem so simple, outrageous player. Everton have accrued just 22 points so far which is the lowest topflight total they’ve ever had at this stage of the season, a real concern for the club and supporters, surely the team will be scrapping and fighting for 3 points today? Commanding and competent with 4 goals for the first time in a premier league match since the 4-3 defeat of Leicester in January 2019. Just looking at the early moments, for Wolves, this is all about getting enough Gold shirts forward. A very similar line up to Watford I would imagine, quite possibly with no changes to the starting XI. That would make a change of late and a sign that Bruno is more comfortable with things. I’ve mentioned Raul, he’ll be important for sure, he has scored in all 5 of his matches for Wolves v Everton. Quite a statistic! Neto getting on v Watford was great to see, will he get picked today ahead of Hwang, or is it too early? At Molineux, last November, Wolves deservedly won this fixture 2-1 with two first half goals, a header from a corner by Kilman and a lovely dink of a finish by Raul after a poor back pass. Much has changed since then, Everton now have Lampard at the helm, though results remain poor (4 defeats in the last 5 league matches) and ahead of the match today, they sit 4th bottom – incredible given the investment.
Everton winger Anthony Gordon has opened up on his side's woeful form ahead of Sunday's clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
We are very aware of the position we are in. If we get certain things right, all the worry will disappear,” he said. It is our fault we are there.” If we do that, we’ll be fine.” A team of our calibre should not be experiencing this.” Gordon has been the shining light in an otherwise miserable season, cementing his place in the first team with a series of impressive performances.

The lineups are out, and Frank Lampard has dropped Michael Keane and Allan, Demarai Gray returns and Dominic Calvert-Lewin is out of the squad completely.
Podence is warming up but Hee-Chan wants to stay on and the Goodison crowd is unimpressed by his antics. The Toffees were overwhelmed at Wolves in the first half, but a tactical adjustment at the break from Rafa Benitez made for a much closer game as the Blues lost 2-1 with Alex Iwobi getting the goal. Corner just misses Richy and is cleared by the visitors who can break. 6’ - Chance! Vitalii Mykolenko finds Richy streaking behind the backline and Jose Sa parries away a shot from a tight angle. Gray takes, Holgate’s attempt to cross back in blocked for a corner on the left. Halftime Thoughts - The Blues started brightly and have had a couple of decent shots on goal but Sa has stood strong. Freekick into the box, Jimenez gets to it first and goes just wide with Pickford rooted to the spot. Had the time to control it really and start a break, but safety first. 78’ - Horrible diving tackle from Kenny takes out Jimenez and the ref has no hesitation to show him a second yellow and now Everton are down a man. Gray inswinger, Holgate heads across the box, Doucoure gets his head to it and Sa gathers. Last chance for the Blues. Gordon and Townsend over it, a shade to the right. Everton’s players are trying to applaud the fans but the boos are loud and clear.

DOMINIC KING AT GOODISON PARK: When the latest day of misery reached its conclusion, the most revealing aspect of Everton's turmoil came from the crowd.
We adapted, we changed and we continue in possession and I said this is the thing we need to do every game. After 15-20 minutes it was calm and we had the players to make the spaces. When Everton had the ball, they sat back and allowed their hosts to pass it around as, other than Antony Gordon and Demarai Gray, they were powderpuff. Quickly it became obvious it was going to be the latter. ‘I played for 20 years and I have seen plenty of reactions from crowds,’ said Lampard, a man who is an open book in terms of emotions and it was plain to see he was hurting. These fans are some of the most loyal and passionate in the business but, above all, they are knowledgeable.
Expressandstar.com brings you live coverage as Wolves face Everton in the Premier League.
Knowing a performance was vital and a victory much needed, the Blues boss named his starting eleven: Pickford, Coleman (c), Holgate, Godfrey, Kenny, Doucoure, ...
Gordon was proving a major threat to Wolves and latching onto a loose ball, he left Saiss for dead to then cross low for Richarlison who was beaten to it by the alert Sa in the Wolves goal. A really nice break from Demarai Gray saw him feed Richarlison for a first time effort that went just wide and before the goal kick, Andros Townsend replaced Gray for the Blues second change. Goodison was urging the Blues forward and another good cross from Gordon saw Richarlison head just wide albeit with the offside flag already raised against him. Four added minutes were announced and the Blues won a late free kick just outside the Wolves area on the right that Townsend fired wide of the far post… Another nice move saw Richarlison release Gordon and he played a decent ball down the right channel for Coleman who was again denied by Sa. A good run and cross from Gordon momentarily caught Wolves out before Sa claimed the ball. Podence found Dendoncker in space on the right and his cross was put behind by Kenny and before the set piece could be taken, Coady went down claiming Pickford had punched him, referee Oliver ignoring the claims. Everton won two early corners that came to nothing and around the ten-minute mark, Wolves went into full theatrical mode with Hwang going down three times in five minutes despite receiving treatment and appearing okay to play on, and eventually leaving the game. The beauty of it is he is dedicated and professional and he wanted to put himself out there. He suffered in the game and came off because he was suffering. We need to come, it’s not about result, it’s about the performance, when we don’t have the ball, we need to be aggressive, we need to play compact, we cannot give spaces for the opponent, and when we have the ball go there. The fans will see that [fight] in the way we approach the game and perform on Sunday. I remain optimistic and confident about the team because I have belief in them, but the reality is we need results.
Adam Jones has the final say on Everton's 1-0 home defeat to Wolves in the Premier League in his match verdict.
This should have been a turning point in the opposite direction. Abdoulaye Doucoure and Donny van de Beek proved non-existent in the middle of the pitch. Nine points gained in over half a Premier League season. Two wins in 20 matches. It's a must-win game, no doubt about it. Fans have been through it all this season. Everton have been in a relegation fight for some time. Goodison Park was meant to be the shining light, it was meant to push these players on to better performances, but they did nothing of the sort in this game. Goodison Park over recent weeks has been hailed as the Blues' saviour. That could be down to a number of supporters leaving before the final whistle, but really it points to the emotions deep in the stomachs of Everton supporters having watched that match. This felt like something different, however. Everton started well and the fans were right up for it in the first half, but they quickly tailed off and the uninspiring football understandably led to discontent in the stands.
Wolves claimed a 1-0 win at Everton to increase the pressure on Toffees boss, while Leeds scored deep in injury time to beat Norwich.
Ayling did not appear to get any of the ball, but referee Stuart Attwell changed his initial decision after taking a look at the touchline monitor. It was his first appearance since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Rodrigo seized on a loose ball at the edge of the box to fire Leeds in front on 14 minutes.
The former Liverpool defender Conor Coady gave Wolves a 1-0 win that keeps Everton, who had Jonjoe Kenny sent off late on, looking over their shoulders.
“We have 12 games [left] and we are waiting for that moment when things turn in our favour,” he said. Neves is known more for his passing than his dribbling but he embarked on a 40-yard solo run before Marçal had a shot saved by Pickford. “One of the best second halves we did,” said Lage. Everton could not say the same. Lampard showed a ruthless streak as Everton began without the spine of Monday’s side. “We have to have the absolute desire and fight to get out of this. Raúl Jiménez volleyed past one post and Daniel Podence drilled a shot past the other. “Conor looks like a striker to score that,” Lage said with a smile.

Raul Jimenez flicked a snap-shot wide and Daniel Podence, who came on for Hwang, also narrowly missed the target after a driving run as the Toffees struggled to even get a touch on the ball. Frank Lampard’s side do have three matches in hand on most of their rivals but a run of just nine points from the last 60 available and only two league wins since September has left a squad drained of confidence in danger of dropping out of the top flight for only the third time in their history and first since 1951.
Everton manager Frank Lampard reacts to 1-0 home defeat against Wolves and gives take on the relegation outlook.
"We've got 12 games to go now, so we can't get too stuck in the rut of looking at this game alone. That's understandable, with the position the club is in and that's been coming for a long time. "It was a difficult game for the lads today because we were ok until a cross and a clean header goes against us. "It's my job to be confident, to be positive, to be realistic - and the realistic view is we've got 12 games, some games in hand on other teams around us. "So it certainly wasn't on the level of Tottenham." "The goal, for me, changed the whole feeling of the game, the feeling of the stadium.
