Walking out there in front of the stand with all the people, it's just such a special place. He added: "I did (feel the pressure a bit more), with the crowds and the build up, so it's just amazing. "She's just an incredible mare. Zanahiyr (28/1) was a length away in third place. The dream result was for her to win with the crowd here to cheer her and Rachael - it's amazing and no more than they deserve." Appreciate It, having his first race since winning the Supreme Novices' Hurdle on this day last year, made the running with Not So Sleepy for company until Honeysuckle made her move and jumped to the front at the second-last flight.

Cheltenham Festival tips: experts reveal their picks for Tuesday's races (Horse & Hound)

The 2022 Cheltenham Festival kicks off today (15 March) and we've asked experts to share their Cheltenham Festival tips to try to help you pick a winner.

It is dotty to imagine him roaring up the hill ahead of the mighty Irish challenge or Protektorat but if he is, I will be screaming him home.” Horse & Hound magazine, out every Thursday, is packed with all the latest news and reports, as well as interviews, specials, nostalgia, vet and training advice. The stayers’ is a very open race this year and my head says he’s the right horse anyway, but my heart definitely wants him to get his head in front.” ITV Racing commentator Richard Hoiles nominates this big outsider at odds of around 20/1: “She won the Coral Cup two years ago when backed down to favouritism and will likely run off a lower mark this time around after a failed spell chasing. Great British Racing ambassador and four-time champion jump jockey Richard Johnson says: “Shishkin will be the banker of the meeting for most people but even if you’re not into betting, he’s an amazing horse to go and look at, or watch on telly. ITV Racing presenter Alice Plunkett picks this notable outsider: “Put The Kettle On has won it, she LOVES Cheltenham and always brings her A game to the track. H&H racing editor Jennifer Donald says: “This is such an open race but the Skelton team are very shrewd at spotting winning opportunities in handicaps and trainer Dan says there will be an expected party, not an unexpected party, if this seven-year-old wins! H&H racing editor Jennifer Donald says of her Cheltenham Festival tips: “This talented mare finished third behind Ferny Hollow and Appreciate It in the 2020 Cheltenham Festival Bumper and is improving all the time. He is bringing over an army of 60-plus superstars and the talent among them is terrifying!” Great British Racing ambassador and four-time champion jump jockey Richard Johnson says: “This year all the major horses are turning up, so whoever wins on the day deserves to be crowned champion and I think Honeysuckle is a horse we all love. He was very good at Ascot and he seems to like Cheltenham, so fingers crossed… Trainer and H&H columnist Kim Bailey says: “Is he good enough?

The slight concern is he can edge a bit right at hurdles. Not extended to win both starts over fences and seems to be the apple of everyone’s eye at Henry de Bromhead’s yard. Vulnerable. Plenty can go wrong in this race. A tough one to call but worth opposing at his price. Might be short enough in the betting for some but looks sensational. Honeysuckle was not impressive by her standards at Leopardstown last month but she is almost impossible to fault.

Fan favourite Rachael Blackmore looks to defend Cheltenham crown (The Guardian)

The 2021 six-time Festival victor will chase more glory but faces strong competition from Paul Townend and Davy Russell.

Russell is very much the grizzled veteran of the narrative – his first Festival winner came as long ago as 2006, in the cross-country. If, on the other hand, they share out the spoils between them, there is an obvious chance for a rider like Russell to burst through the gap. Blackmore will be the fans’ favourite while Townend heads the bookies’ lists, but Russell could yet be the one to beat them both. At around 4-6, she is one for the heavy-hitters, but £5 and £10 punters – not to mention Lady Gaga fans – will be doubling up with Telmesomethinggirl, last year’s Mares’ Novice Hurdle winner, when she lines up as likely favourite for the Mares’ Hurdle 40 minutes later. It’s always: ‘What’s next?’” Like Walsh in his pomp – and for most of the last 25 years, Frankie Dettori on the Flat – Blackmore is the rider the bookies fear, the one with the potential to eat into their profits like no other if she gets on a roll. Honeysuckle, of course, is the star turn on Tuesday, as she attempts to extend her unbeaten career to 15 races and retain her champion’s status.

Irish trainers on course for another greenwash at Cheltenham Festival (The Guardian)

Rivalry between Britain and Ireland is a friendly one but there will be knock-on effects if the visitors dominate again.

The full strength of the green tide should be apparent by the middle of Wednesday afternoon. One of the few records that survived 2021 – that Ireland has never swept a single day’s card at the Festival – must also be in serious danger. Why spend six figures on a jumping prospect, and thousands more on training fees in a local stable, if it is just going to get rolled over by the Irish again in March? The idea of the Festival as British jump racing’s showpiece event also becomes a harder sell if 95% of the prize money is marked for export every year. After the late 80s, Festivals when the visitors were relieved to get a single winner on the board, it was quite the turnaround. The fact of it was almost a given. Many of the great Festival favourites and winning gambles in recent years have been trained in Ireland. Rachael Blackmore’s historic achievement in becoming the first woman to win the top-jockey prize last season was the icing on the cake.

There are a plethora of other previous Grade One winners capable of winning the Champion Chase including Energumen’s stablemate Chacun Pour Soi, Nube Negra and Henry de Bromheaad-trained Envoi Allen. Willie and the guys are all great mates.” Henderson said back at Ascot. Both horses had unbeaten chase records heading into that January meet, with both tasting victory over the Christmas period, but it was Henderson who was victorious ahead of a hotly anticipated rematch. Both horses possessed fantastic records but it was the Clarence House Chase at Ascot that really sparked things into life in what was the race of the season so far. Last year was strange, to say the least, with the silence of races taking place behind closed doors something we hope is a thing of the past.

The QPR star was speaking out on the week the widely-anticipated racing extravaganza returns.

"I think Edwardstone will win the Arkle and I think Shishkin will win comfortably in the Champion Chase. It will be a different race to what it was at Ascot. That was a brilliant spectacle at Ascot that the trainers allowed to happen. I’ve actually got no horses in training at the minute because I just haven’t had time to go as much given the football commitments, but hopefully in the future I might have a few more. Of course everyone is gutted he won’t run in the Grand National this year, however he has everybody on his side and it would be an incredible atmosphere. "Sadly I won’t be able to go to the Cheltenham Festival this year. On his picks, he continued: "My NAP of the Cheltenham Festival is Run Wild Fred in the National Hunt Chase and my Next Best is HMS Seahorse in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. Jonbon is my selection in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. What has he done wrong? Harry obviously loves his racing and he was an infectious person whose love of racing also had an effect on the dressing room.

He fits the bill as he is a second season novice who holds some really good form. I think she has a massive chance and seems to be back in good order. He was a classy hurdler, who finished second in a Triumph. The nice ground will suit him, he seems to be a good jumper. It's going to be a very fascinating race but he could be the value. I will be fascinated to see how he runs. The one I like is Paul Nicholls's horse Bell Ex One who is having his first run for the stable. I think he could fall a little bit short and go on to do better things after Tuesday. The Supreme is going to be a cracker. Gordon has changed a few things in her training. And what a race to start. We are probably lacking a real star. He's got a good each-way chance.

I am heavily invested in Edwardstone in the Arkle, but that was at a double-figure price and I can sit out this race now that he is favourite. I can see no great edge in the Mares' Hurdle, in which Telmesomethinggirl is a worthy favourite. He is slightly behind his stable companion Dysart Dynamo on my figures, but level with Constitution Hill and ahead of the others. That makes him a bet. Less surprising is that Kilcruit could be about to become very good indeed over hurdles. Will do well to finish in front of any of them. A dream horse for his small team and exceeded expectations with eight wins from 14 starts. No show when favourite for last year's Triumph Hurdle but more himself at Punchestown. An improved horse this campaign, finishing second to Sharjah and Honeysuckle in his races. Just 3lb behind Honeysuckle on the ratings and is set to have his first start outside of Ireland. Galloped 11 lengths clear of Darasso at Gowran last month, sluicing through the heavy ground. Runner-up in the Greatwood at this venue on seasonal debut, carrying top weight, which was a smart effort. Crowds returning not ideal for him either given his enigmatic character. Won this in 2020 when three lengths ahead of Sharjah, at Barry Geraghty's final Festival. A creditable third last year, she has returned in winning form this season after a few training niggles. Does face a couple of interesting new rivals however and understandably is a very short price. Fifth last year and dead-heated with Epatante in the Fighting Fifth last November. That rival can come on plenty for that which cannot be said for Not So Sleepy at the age of ten. Impressive in his trial race, defeating a lot lower rated rivals than he faces here. Will love the ground and a big place contender once again. The fascinating unknown quantity from the Willie Mullins yard.

Cheltenham Festival 2022 schedule: Race times, TV channel and ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

A day-by-day schedule and guide to the big races and latest odds for Cheltenham Festival 2022, as well as five horses to watch.

So many in with a chance, the time is coming for State Man to make his charge. However, this is far-and-away his toughest assignment to date and cases can be made for several of his rivals, with dangers headed by MINELLA COCOONER, who heads up the Willie Mullins four-pronged assault on the race off the back of a taking victory on his first try at Grade 1 level at Leopardstown last month. The Mullins-Townend horse in the Albert Bartlett at 2.50pm is Minella Cocooner who is now the third favourite - bookmakers running for cover from the liabilities of potential Mullins multiples. His stablemate The Nice Guy is unbeaten in three starts and can be right in the mix here; he completes the shortlist. But when they were looking to become major players in jumping again, A Plus Tard was one of the first horses they bought in 2018. “But I had the three horses around me that I wanted to be around me, I had a wall of horses in front of me turning in, but they made sure I didn’t go too soon like I did last year. It was another Mullins winner, but fortunately for bookies it was not the more fancied Minella Cocooner who finished a creditable second. There used to be a big thing about horses not being able to win the Gold Cup at their second attempt but Native River did it and now A Plus Tard has. Whilst he is greatly respected, a flyer is taken on ASTERION FORLONGE, who on more than one occasion has been let down by his jumping but has long threatened to produce an effort out of the top drawer; he can surprise them all here. A Plus Tard put in one of the best performances of the season when demolishing six rivals by upwards of 22 lengths in the Betfair Chase last November. He followed that up with a narrow defeat to Galvin in the Savills Chase and, having been freshened up for this, is taken to reverse the placings with his Leopardstown conqueror. “I was happy, I was kind of where I wanted to be, there were probably more horses in front of me throughout the race than I wanted,” she added. Last year, with Aintree and Cheltenham held behind closed doors, the receptions Blackmore received was on a par with quiet hour at a Trappist monastery.

Cheltenham Festival 2022: Honeysuckle wins Champion Hurdle ... (The Guardian)

Fans are back as the Cheltenham Festival roars into action with the Champion Hurdle the highlight on day one.

Corach Rambler won that as a novice. She’s incredible - it is the never-ending fairytale. He has been brilliant for me. We got lucky today - it was a magnificent ride by Derek. I hate dropping horses in, but I felt he came better of a good pace. But he has loads of ability. She’s a superstar, as is Rachael Blackmore, confirming the form of last year and an 11th grade one win of that unbeaten 15. At 18/1, Marie’s Rock is the longest-priced winner of the day. I was very impressed with her at Warwick last time out so I was hopeful. The Seven Barrows stable landed second places in the Supreme and the Champion Hurdles so that department is going well. He’s come from France and is a very, very short price for this particular race, the Fred Winter in old money. A very sparse turnout for a race that has attracted at least 20 runners eight times this century, but it is one of four novice chases at the meeting these days and one of the others – the Turners’ Novice Chase on Thursday – has just four runners, all from Ireland, after the final decs earlier today. - Stattler – 2/1

Jockey Club chief executive Nevin Truesdale has offered his take on the idea of a five-day Cheltenham Festival.

"To run the festival over four days but end on a Saturday would be a very difficult economic decision. Going from seven to six races a day would self-evidently be one of the big cons." "The important things to stress are that we won't do anything without consulting and that a five-day festival is not a fait accompli. The holy grail of every sport is attracting the next generation. All that will ultimately drive the decision." That is simply not the case.
