The presenter's bestselling novel is brought to life by Irish acting royalty and Kathy Burke as director.

We watched one of Tommy Burke’s former flames, Evelyn, conducting a new affair, this time with a local 17-year-old. It fell to Sergeant Collins to decide whether she was drinking out of guilt or grief – though as he sat in his car, glassy eyed and methodically swallowing slice after slice of bread, it became clear he had his own demons to deal with. Rumours tore through the close-knit community.

Peter Power said: "Enjoyed what I saw of #holding tonight. Kate Williams said: "OMG what a load of rubbish that was. I'd heard the book was good so was looking forward to it, but despite typical Irish scenery, which I liked a lot, the acting was horribly ill-fitting, more like Craggy Island seen through a bad magic-mushroom experience than a murder mystery.

Holding, ITV review - Graham Norton's novel moves seamlessly to ... (The Arts Desk)

A fine Irish cast does justice to a gentle but dark whodunnit set in West Cork. TV review by Helen Hawkins.

Ev is the exotic one, her love life way out of the ordinary, but she has competition from her farmer sister Abigail (Helen Behan), who regularly fires up a spliff by the cowsheds, and sister Florence (Amy Conroy), who is trying to move away to the other side of the world with her married lover Susan (standup Eleanor Tiernan). There is a whiff of Chekhov’s trio of sisters here in the women’s family dynamic: should they stick together or escape, fast? A couple of characters occasionally jar: overweening Eileen, the Linda Snell of Duneen, played a little too broadly at times by Pauline McLynn (Father Ted’s Mrs Doyle); and Linus the Dublin detective sent to run the cold case investigation, a slightly obvious plot device to nudge PJ out of his torpor. So of course his first impulse is to try to cheer her up with a Benny Hill impression and a nimble-footed spurt of Riverdance. A peerless scene. Conleth Hill, the Northern Irish stage actor who became a global star as the scheming eunuch Lord Varys in Game of Thrones, has a ball serving up the unspoken self-hatred that is slowly eroding this gentle man and driving him to his bread-binges. Fricker is just one of the distinguished Irish cast obviously relishing the script by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Karen Cogan. How often does an Oscar winner (for 1989's My Left Foot) get to deliver a line at an intense moment like: "The sausages won't buy themselves!" The landmarks are familiar: a quiet rural community, a cop with an unhealthy lifestyle and a secret sorrow, a feud between rival lovers of the local lothario, a long-buried trauma that’s suddenly unearthed.

In prose – though, to be clear, I’ve not actually read Norton’s novel, I’m thinking more broadly – it might be easier to convey certain charms, quirks, and idiosyncrasies compared to a television drama that never quite breaks from what you might call ITV house style. Subplots like one character preparing to move away or another’s inappropriate relationship are at once a necessary part of this genre, which depends on the town itself feeling unique even if the crime is a little familiar, but don’t always feel like they’re given space to breathe and assert themselves. He’s a gentle, insecure protagonist, trying to hold together the local community – which he’s still not quite part of, only there for three years compared to their decades –and the brusque big city cop who’s more interested in efficient detective work than accommodating the people who live in the small town. He’s stressed and panicking, much happier sitting in his car eating bits of cheese – straight out of the packet, folding each slice into a single bite – than interrogating suspects or brooding on lonely beaches. There are surface differences – each house on the street is painted a different colour, which is a nice little visual quirk – but underneath it all the bones of this story are essentially the same as any other given example you might care to name.
