Man City give Liverpool further hope in puzzling draw with Palace (unknown)

Pep Guardiola didn't use any substitutes in a dominant, but goalless, draw against Palace that left the door further ajar for a chasing Liverpool.

They have given Liverpool a huge incentive for Wednesday's trip to Arsenal, knowing that victory there in their game in hand will take them one point behind City with nine games each to play. As it was, Guardiola didn't make a single substitution in a game City had to win to maintain a degree of breathing space over Liverpool, the holder's lead standing at four points now. But it is tempting on nights like this -- as rare as they are -- to imagine what might have happened here had City landed Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane or Cristiano Ronaldo last summer. The result inevitably shapes judgements on such decision-making, but that just felt odd in the immediate aftermath. If he really was thinking about changing things, it never seemed particularly close to becoming reality. City peppered Palace's goal with 18 shots.

Crystal Palace frustrate Manchester City again to throw title race wide open (unknown)

Bernardo Silva missed two chances as Manchester City failed to find a breakthrough and left the door open for chasing Liverpool.

Six minutes after the interval, following a spell of pressure, Cheikhou Kouyaté glanced wide from in front of goal after Marc Guéhi’s header had given him the chance. A more delicate connection from Laporte would have sent the rebound into the vacant goal but, as the ball sat up at pace, he skied over to jeers. It was the snappy Gallagher who epitomised Palace’s pressing from his attacking midfield role; 10 minutes in he dispossessed Aymeric Laporte and broke into space but overhit his pass left to an open Wilfried Zaha in an example of the counters they could not quite turn into clear opportunities. Before that a marginally offside De Bruyne had struck the far post from an angle, his infraction meaning Guaita’s stupendous save from Mahrez’s blasted rebound proved immaterial. Palace ran themselves into the ground, the effervescent Conor Gallagher still managing to find two threatening positions in added time before half-joking afterwards that he could not feel his legs. Patrick Vieira, serenaded lustily from the stands long after full-time, may come to have played a deciding role in his former club’s season.

Crystal Palace vs Man City - Premier League: Live score, team news ... (Daily Mail)

Manchester City will look to extend their lead over Liverpool to six points when they travel to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Monday night.

Palace win the ball back in the City half and it's played out to Olise on the right. He takes a touch before trying to poke it into the far corner with the outside of his left foot. "I genuinely feel that once you get into this stage of the season that things start to get meaningful. First Grealish plays in De Bruyne with a clever pass and he sees his shot come back off the post. Fortunately for both, they keep hold of the ball. The speed with which Palace can break worries the City manager, the tenacity of their pressing makes his defenders uncomfortable. Should have won it in the first half, did not do quite enough to win it thereafter. City will not believe how they have allowed Liverpool back in, the gap now down to four points ahead of Wednesday's game in hand with Arsenal. Guardiola – who will be watching that - witnessed his team hit the woodwork twice and basically miss two open goals. Here we have a title race that is evoking memories of 2019 - this is what we want, not the canters of the previous two campaigns. That is the bar and that is why this draw could prove seismic when momentum is everything. Doom, during these ridiculous days of City and Liverpool dominance, happens to be a draw at a very good Crystal Palace. Funny game. Until VAR intervened, Saints thought they had a penalty and would be facing 10 men in the Manchester meeting, so it may not have taken much for them to win that game too. Even then, the victory in question (at Arsenal) was only secured with a 93rd minute goal. As hard as it may be to believe, in a mini-league of City, Wolves, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Southampton and Palace, the current league leaders are second bottom. The match ended 0-0 which means that if the Reds take at least four points from their next two league matches against Arsenal and Watford, they will be top of the league when City next kick off. The most eye-catching results occurred against Spurs, with Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte each steering the north Londoners to a victory over the defending champions. While the ‘rent free’ baton never fully changes hands, it’s now the turn of City fans to hope for some assistance from other sides for a couple of games as the title race continues to hot up.
