Pep Guardiola has made four changes to his starting lineup for this afternoon's FA Cup quarter-final at Southampton.
And we know we will need to be on top form to progress to the last four. Rodrigo will sit just in front of the back four to add a layer of disciplined protection. They are a well-organised side with a manager who demands energy and industry as standard. And Kevin De Bruyne is one of the most gifted midfielders in the game. John Stones and Aymeric Laporte continue together at the heart of the defence. Zack Steffen once again starts a domestic cup fixture.
Riverside's sparse away end a symbol of visitors' ongoing crisis, but also of the deep dysfunction at the heart of the game.
After all the talk of Chelsea travelling to Middlesbrough by bus, they ended up flying to Teesside International – only the most cynical, though, would think that they have been over-dramatising their immediate plight to gain public sympathy. On the pitch, it was all rather anti-climactic, but with Chelsea the story these days is only partially about that. Attempts to have the game played behind closed doors on the grounds of “sporting integrity” were rightly derided and ultimately withdrawn.

The institution of the Cup is widely devalued but Nottingham Forest v Liverpool brings up memories of a more innocent age.
The decline of Forest from European champions to top-six challengers in the 80s tends to be put down to Clough’s falling out with Taylor, and that clearly was a major factor, but so, too, were basic issues of finance. In 1977, they were run by a committee headed by the chairman, Brian Appleby, a lawyer, and his deputy, Stuart Dryden, a sub-postmaster. He named Liverpool, Leeds “and others”. If you assume by that he meant Arsenal, Everton and Manchester United, 30 of the next 35 league titles would be won by that five-team elite before Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea broke the sequence. And for fans of a certain age, disillusioned by the transformation of clubs into commercial vehicles or tools of soft power, nostalgia may be the most important thing we have left: it’s the only thing to look forward to – the past. It was, Thompson admitted, “a professional foul”, and today it would be a clear red card, but Liverpool were furious. Forest were without three cup-tied players, including Peter Shilton, which meant a start in goal for Chris Woods who, at 18 years and 124 days, remains the youngest goalkeeper to play in a Wembley final.

Palace are enjoying a superb season under Patrick Vieira and a trip to the national stadium for a semi-final would be another major step in the Eagles’ progression but they must get the better of Premier League opposition for the first time on this cup run, having beaten Stoke City, Hartlepool and Millwall to get this far. Everton took on non-league Boreham Wood in the Fifth Round and their cup run has been a welcome distraction from a dismal league campaign that has left them battling relegation. Crystal Palace and Everton are both just one win from Wembley as they meet in this afternoon’s FA Cup quarter-final at Selhurst Park.

He allows himself to think further into the future only because he was asked the question, but his focus is still on the game that comes next. I think Fabinho will anchor the midfield alongside Curtis Jones and Naby Keita. It’s a fantastic opportunity, that’s absolutely true — the only problem we have is Nottingham Forest and another team we could theoretically face in the semi-final who want to do the same. “It is nice to play the semi-final at Wembley, absolutely nice, but actually the real deal is then a few weeks later. He’s already confirmed Alisson Becker will start in goal, which could give hints to what else we’ll look like further up the pitch. With every press conference that passes, his steeliness in the face of the growing pressure that surrounds the team’s title charge best sums up why there is such a laser-like focus around the club.

While Everton fans will be excited at the prospect of featuring at Wembley Stadium, realistically they could probably do without even more matches while they look to avoid relegation. The Hammers will be brimming with confidence after they progressed to the Europa League quarter-final, however after putting all their effort into the European clash, they could be worn out ahead of their short trip across London. It will be a tough ask of Villa’s defence to keep the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli quiet, and if they play like they did against the Reds midweek, then they have a good chance of taking all three points.

He was in the audience and I slaughtered him for it. A scoreless draw at English football’s most intimidating stadium — preceded by a slow and quite deliberate walkabout in front of the Kop — took Forest through. I was in the stands and dead level. He would have got in any team and that made him world class. On that occasion, Liverpool forward John Aldridge celebrated a Brian Laws own goal by ruffling the defender’s hair. For the second leg on Merseyside, Clough dipped in to his man-management playbook. And then, by remarkable chance, the two teams were drawn together in the first round of the following season’s European Cup. He was a star, an England international and I was a nobody. Arguably it began at the League Cup final in 1978. But Souness tells Sportsmail: ‘The Cup draw was on the radio and when we drew Forest I could hardly contain my language. Given some of the matches that took place between the sides during that era, it was not one of the most significant. We used to play them, spend all afternoon with the ball and then lose.

The Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough will host the match. There has been plenty of criticism for Chelsea this week but on the pitch under Thomas Tuchel they have not lost the art of grinding out results. The Blues demanded the game in the north east be played in front of no fans for “reasons of sporting integrity” because they can no longer sell match tickets, but made a U-turn after coming under attack from the Government, Middlesbrough and a section of their own fans.

Hakim Ziyech celebrated his birthday with a goal as Chelsea won 2-0 at Middlesbrough to book their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
It was a bit of a nearly game for us. Maybe, just maybe, if they had stuck to the original budget and forced Tuchel’s players to travel north by bus rather than fly to Teesside airport they might have exhibited signs of tiredness as dusk descended. “It wasn’t one-way traffic and I’m immensely proud of the players and the club for what’s been a terrific cup run,” said Wilder. “But we’re a little bit disappointed. As Lumley atoned for his arguable culpability in Ziyech’s goal by palming Timo Werner’s header away, Boro fans’ thoughts surely began turning to their hopes of securing a play-off place. When Ziyech’s delivery picked out Mason Mount wide on the right, Mount was allowed to advance and unleash a dangerous, beautifully weighted, low cross for the on-rushing Lukaku to sweep into the back of net courtesy of a first time, six yard, shot. Within minutes a crestfallen Lumley was rescued by Anfernee Dijksteel, the defender’s last-ditch, impeccably timed, goal-line clearance denying Lukaku a second goal after the Belgian wrong-footed Wilder’s goalkeeper.

Manchester City and Southampton have had two tense matches this season and their third will have an extra element for the managers.
Let it not be forgotten, though, that Guardiola is one of the biggest advocates for five subs. That’s why, for example, they beat City in July 2020 when the manager clocked that Ederson was pressing up to help with the build-up and instructed his players to force a mistake and then lob the keeper. This season, City failed to win either of their league meetings and were fortunate in the home game to have VAR overturn a second-half penalty that they conceded.

However, this evening Thomas Tuchel will be determined for his team to be fully focused on the task in hand. There remains uncertainty regarding Chelsea's situation off the field and they ended up withdrawing their request for this game to be played behind closed doors. Maybe he has never heard of the Glazers. Ironically, it is their club, Manchester United, who are being urged to poach Tuchel. Frying pans and fires spring to mind. Middlesbrough attacker Folarin Balogun, who is on loan from Arsenal, has scored two goals in his last three appearances. Even at this early juncture it had the feel of a cherry on his cake. His only other domestic effort of this calendar year came in the third round against Chesterfield, form figures to support the notion he acts best on the flattest of tracks. Chelsea take the lead. An FA Cup semi-final at Wembley is the reward for this comfortable win, secured thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech. They showed plenty of desire thereafter and exit the competition with pride. It was only last season that the sacking of club legend Frank Lampard and Tuchel’s subsequent arrival brought about an improvement culminating in a second European crown of the Abramovich era. Those associated with Chelsea have long since known that their club exists on the footballing equivalent of a fault line. We defended as a team and attacked as a team.

He's got wand of a left foot and it's a brilliant strike. Get the next goal and it's game on. Ziyech's shot has got a little bit of movement on it. Chelsea are comfortable and not really stretched at the minute, keeping Boro at arm's length. Nothing of the sort. Lukaku rounds Lumley and looks certain to slot in a third goal for Chelsea, but the Dutchman is alert to the danger and brilliantly clears off the line. Solid in the centre of the park. First Romelu Lukaku and then Hakim Ziyech. The second goal drained the Riverside somewhat, but Boro aren't out of this. So bright in midfield, driving Boro forward with possession and niggling away with the press And the volume inside the Riverside has increased because of it.

The wing-back has been the star of Boro's run and looks set to become a Premier League player soon, with or without his current club.
Much like Scotland and their abundance of left-backs, Boro appear to have stumbled upon the two best right-backs outside of the Premier League. Boro’s march to the last eight of the competition has been an overwhelmingly positive experience for those involved. It was a game that threatened to get hairy for Boro as goals from Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech had the beleaguered visitors 2-0 up after 31 minutes.

A smooth burst of passing from Mount and Mateo Kovacic left Middlesbrough chasing shadows and Ziyech cut in from the right flank to drill a swerving strike into the far corner from the edge of the area. If that miss was emblematic of Lukaku's struggles this season, in the 15th minute he gave a glimpse of the predatory instincts that persuaded the Blues to pay a club record £97 million to sign him from Inter Milan last year. It hasn't all been plain sailing and following a scathing response from Middlesbrough and even their own supporters, Chelsea had withdrawn their request for the quarter-final to be played behind closed doors after they were denied the chance to sell their full allocation of tickets due to the sanctions.
Nick Cox, Head of Academy, highlights James Garner's success at Forest as key example of United's loan success.
We are constantly trying to assess all of the returns that we get in terms of a loan spell. “Yes, getting minutes on the pitch is quite important, but it’s not the only measure of success of a loan period. “Some boys join Academies at the age of nine, so they might not have played grassroots football and they might be in the programme for 10 or 12 years. Every player has different development needs, Cox explains, and that means the measure of success is not consistent. Forest now host Liverpool at the City Ground. Garner is one of several United loanees excelling away from the club, playing a crucial role in Forest’s exciting cup run.

The last time Forest were successful in three consecutive FA Cup ties against top-flight opponents was in 1990-91 (Crystal Palace, Southampton and Norwich City). Not since 2011-12 have the Reds made it through more rounds across England’s domestic cup competitions (11), when they won the League Cup and finished as runners-up in the FA Cup under Kenny Dalglish. Overall, Liverpool have progressed from six of their seven FA Cup ties against Nottingham Forest, failing only in the first such meeting in February 1895. ● Liverpool are winless in their last 12 away games against Nottingham Forest in all competitions (D7 L5), since a 2-0 victory in October 1984. Their last meeting in the competition was in 1971-72 in the third round (Everton won 3-2 in a replay). The Toffees have progressed to the final four in 57% of those ties (26/46), last doing so in 2015-16 under Roberto Martinez. ● Each of the two Premier League clashes between Southampton and Man City this season have ended level, 0-0 at the Etihad and 1-1 at St Mary’s most recently. ● 31 goals have been scored across the seven previous FA Cup clashes between Crystal Palace (11) and Everton (20), with both sides recording separate 6-0 wins over the other in the competition. One of those previous matchups was the 1997 showpiece, when Middlesbrough – appearing in their first and only FA Cup Final – suffered a 2-0 defeat at Wembley thanks to goals from Roberto Di Matteo and Eddie Newton. ● Romelu Lukaku has had a direct hand in three goals in three previous appearances against Middlesbrough (2 goals, 1 assist), all as an Everton player. ● Everton haven’t lost consecutive away games at Crystal Palace since 1971, when they lost in back-to-back away top-flight visits. ● Middlesbrough have eliminated two Premier League clubs en-route to the quarter-finals, beating Man Utd on penalties and Spurs via extra-time.

They may be known as the quarter-finals these days but this weekend's last-eight line-up for the FA Cup is a prime slice of 1990s nostalgia.
Forest’s form is only second to Fulham’s, with the supporters having lapped up the Welshman’s fist-bumps as Depeche Mode’s ‘I Just Can’t Get Enough’ blares out after home victories. Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest may have endured lean times since those halcyon days but, with two Premier League scalps apiece in their stirring cup campaigns, this weekend’s opponents Chelsea and Liverpool cannot afford to under-estimate the Championship duo. Wilder’s appointment felt like a coup given the way he transformed boyhood club Sheffield United during five seasons there. Both Boro and Forest had fallen on hard times to become Championship fixtures in recent years — the Riverside having hosted Premier League football in just one of the last 12 seasons, while Forest’s 23-year top-flight exile has included three years in League One. Of course, this fixture in the FA Cup will also bring back awful memories for many, with the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 when 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives at a semi-final between the two clubs. As if having the competition back on BBC and ITV didn’t seem like enough of a throwback, the four ties drawn out of the hat feel like they belong very much in a time when sixth-round day was one of the biggest in the football calendar.

Roberto Firmino made the difference at Arsenal on Wednesday and he will be important. It’s hard to believe Forest have been out of the Premier League for 23 years. I’m sure City fans value the FA Cup because they would love to emulate Manchester United’s treble in 1999. With the international break next, he may select a stronger team than usual. He is elegant on the ball and has a high work-rate out of possession. I hope Frank Lampard picks a strong Everton team to build on the momentum of Thursday’s win over Newcastle. But Palace winger Michael Olise can exploit Everton’s weakness at left back.
