Celebrated as a symbol of the British wartime spirit, Dame Vera had a career as a singer and entertainer lasting a remarkable ninety years. I had the chance to interview Vera, and to meet her husband Harry - always there to keep a watchful eye on the missus. A Service of Thanksgiving for the life and work of Dame Vera Lynn was held at Westminster Abbey at Noon on Monday 21st March 2021.

A Service of Thanksgiving in Westminster Abbey has seen tributes paid to Dame Vera, who passed away in June 2020 at the age of 103 | ITV News Meridian.

In 2009, at the age of 92, Dame Vera became the oldest living artist to top the UK's album chart with We'll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn. The singer lived for much of her life in the village of Ditchling in Sussex, where she passed away in June 2020 at the age of 103. The star's successful career continued long after the war, with her cover of the song My Son, My Son reaching number one on the UK single charts in 1954.

The service was held at Westminster Abbey on Monday with members of her family, friends from the world of music, representatives from charities she supported and members of the Armed Forces in attendance. Whether she was in Britain singing on radio programmes, or with the boys on the front in the Middle East or in Burma where she spent several long weeks entertaining the troops.” While broadcaster Dimbleby reflected on the late singer’s close connection with the Armed Forces, noting the challenges the soldiers faced during those dark days of war and how in their quiet moments they would most yearn for home.
