Emma Raducanu was unable to make the most of a strong start as she was edged out in the second-round by Katerina Siniakova at the Miami Open.
Raducanu looked to have turned the tide back in her favour when she moved 5-3 ahead and then served for the match. I was just thinking at the end that my fitness got me through that match. Raducanu made another fast start as Siniakova seemed to be struggling with the heat and humidity, calling the trainer after only five games.
Emma Raducanu's tough education in her maiden WTA Tour season continued as she lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 against Katerina Siniakova in the second round at the ...
Raducanu did not relinquish the match without some admirable fight, however, and she reeled off three games in a row just as the match seemed to be slipping away at 2-3, 15-30 in the third set. As in her Indian Wells loss to Petra Martic, she served for the match at 5-4 but she could not hold her nerve. For Raducanu, the 11th seed, her defeat played out in remarkably similar fashion to her loss in the Indian Wells third round two weeks ago. After a tough 18 months following the Covid hiatus in 2020, Watson recently fell out of the top 100. From a set and a break down, Siniakova, ranked 53rd in singles and the doubles world No 1, quickly worked herself into the match. But Raducanu has struggled to play at a consistent, high intensity throughout an entire match this year.
The British number one ran out of steam but Heather Watson scored a big win over Elina Svitolina.
I was just thinking at the end that my fitness got me through that match. Osaka said: “I’m definitely really happy with how this match went. Raducanu said: “It was a long match. I just love it here, I feel like it’s home. But the Czech rallied from 1-3 down to take the second set. There was some good tennis on both sides, to be honest, but obviously it sucks to lose that one.”
Emma Raducanu was beaten by Katerina Siniakova 3-6 6-4 7-5 in the second round of the Miami Open.
She went on to close out the 60-minute encounter on her third match point. "She's like the first high-seeded player I've beaten this year," Osaka noted during her on-court interview. I was just thinking at the end that my fitness got me through that match. But, with the finish line in sight, Raducanu was broken and she then lost the momentum completely from 5-5. I just love it here, I feel like it's home," Watson said to Amazon Prime Video. She moved 5-3 ahead and had a chance to serve for the match.
Emma Raducanu's Miami Open exit will "hurt big time", according to Daniela Hantuchova with the tennis pundit saying she no longer enjoys the locker room ...
And I believe Emma has the level. “But this is where you have to be tough if you want to win matches like this, if you want to win tournaments like this. “At that age, you want to be fit, you want to show everyone that you are out there, no matter how long it takes,” Hantuchova added. Everyone is trying to figure out how to play against her. “She was the better player for most of it. Her defeat to Katerina Siniakova in Florida will be a tough pill to swallow as she was a break up in both the second and third sets.

Raducanu again broke in the first game of the third set but the world No 53 came firing back once more to level things at 2-2. The Bromley teenager managed to break straight back to regain her lead as Siniakova fell onto the court and shook her head, holding back tears when she stood back up. But Raducanu then won eight points in a row to find herself 3-1 up with a break as the 25-year-old shouted in frustration and requested the physio for the next changeover.

Opportunity awaits up next, as one of Kalinskaya or lucky loser Lucia Bronzetti of Italy will reach Round 4. Raducanu never reached match point. "My fitness got me through the match at the end. It is also the first time she has won back-to-back WTA 1000 matches since Miami in 2016. I felt when I really needed it I just felt really strong out the corners and I was moving well. I'm just so happy it worked." Raducanu then seized the initiative as she broke again in the seventh game and it looked like she would wrap it up on her serve, but she double faulted on Siniakova's break point. Siniakova was visibly upset as she was struggling with a rib issue, but regained her composure and broke back to move within a game of the Brit.
Emma Raducanu was once again a picture of dejection as she left the court in Miami last night.
A wide forehand, after the latest long rally, gifts Siniakova her first break point and another forehand error from Raducanu means the Czech breaks and we're back on serve in this first set. The Raducanu forehand is working well at the moment - a brilliant crosscourt winner giving Siniakova no chance. She injects a bit of energy to win the next point - forcing a Siniakova error. From there the Czech takes the game and for the first time this match she's ahead in a set. A backhand into the net, however, makes it deuce and from there Siniakova holds well. At 30-0 down Raducanu hits some powerful forehands before coming into the net and hitting a forehand winner on the run. Serving to stay in the set Raducanu stays in the rallies forcing Siniakova to make errors. Raducanu steps in off the Siniakova second serve and hits a violent forehand winner down the line - that's what she does best. Sinaikova gets the final set under way after both change their kit - understandable in the heat and humidity of Florida - and it doesn't go her way, Raducanu racing to a 0-40 lead. Whenever she comes into the net Siniakova looks dangerous - she does that first point of this game hitting a vicious backhand winner. Raducanu saves the first of Siniakova's two service points with a backhand winner but a long backhand means the Czech hangs on in this final set. And the Czech wins it thanks to a backhand that goes long.

Svitolina is clearly pre-occupied by the terrible events in her homeland is not the scalp she once was, but it was a determined effort from Watson, whose ranking has slipped to 115.
