Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet's more gender neutral looks at the 2022 Oscars have caused a surge in searches for "unisex fashion."
For the Vanity Fair Oscar Party following the ceremony, Zendaya changed into a fitted suit by Sportmax. According to data by Love the Sales, a fashion e-commerce aggregator, searches for several items related to the “Dune” stars’ looks increased significantly in the last 24 hours. “Dune” stars Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, in particular, veered away from the traditional awards ceremony attire, opting for more gender neutral looks.
Timothée Chalamet wore sparkly Louis Vuitton tailoring with naught but a set of Cartier necklaces between the world and his chest to the Oscars 2022.
Indeed, it's an outfit that could as easily be worn by Chalamet as it could Tilda Swinton, or even Ru Paul. Both Darren Criss and Donald Glover wore versions of Dior's classic Oblique double-breasted suit with nothing beneath, back in the heady pre-Covid days of 2019, and designers as broad-ranging as Dries van Noten and Ermenegildo Zegna have shown shirt-free double-breasted suits on their respective runways. There's an otherworldliness to it that feels entirely fresh and entirely modern.

Donning a black sequin ladened blazer, cropped suit trousers, and Chelsea boots, Chalamet rocked an all Louis Vuitton get-up, a designer whom he’d worn previously at the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Coming from the Louis Vuitton 2022 spring womenswear range, the suit’s blazer was overlaid with shiny and intricate lace detailing. He completed the look with a set of chunky silver rings, silver necklaces, as well as no undershirt, already making this a fan favourite for the night. Stepping onto the Oscars 2022 red carpet, actor Timothée Chalamet served up one of the best looks of the night as he wore all-black-everything.
Timothee Chalamet's open, sequined blazer was from Louis Vuitton's womenswear collection. No one batted an eye.
What’s notable is that it’s not edgy; it’s at the Oscars, the lauded institution of American cinema, which is, in turn, a cornerstone of all of American culture. Billy Porter has notably worn dresses to several years of Oscars, but as an out gay man, it’s received differently; people may applaud him, but he isn’t widely embraced as a sex symbol for his voluminous ball gowns; Chalamet’s sequined blazer may be less daring than a dress, but his sparkles and bony chest were embraced by all as the look of a desirable straight man. But what’s more interesting, at least to me, is that Chalamet was widely acclaimed as a sex symbol for the look — even though it was drawn from Louis Vuitton’s women’s collection.
“The Academy Awards briefly came to a stunning halt Sunday night when Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, after which Will Smith went to the ...
Instead of talking about my bold attempt to play with my own masculinity, all anyone’s gonna be talking about is Will Smith’s, and whether it’s the toxic kind or not. And yet Will, Jada, and Chris will all still be unimaginably famous and wealthy. Seriously, my chest is like if a bolt of silk made love to a saucer of the freshest cream, but will that be the headline today? Of course not; they’ll be too busy tearing each other apart over whether or not violence is ever the answer and if it’s equally toxic white feminism to say it’s not. Truly, when I slid the sumptuous fabric of my lace blazer over my sleeveless arms, I thought the only smooth skin anyone would be talking about tonight was the stuff on my chest, visible for all to see and enjoy. But I showed up in Dior women’s wear and no shirt, and that, people, is a Discourse Move.
The first full-fledged Academy Awards ceremony in two years carries on the distinct assertion that certain things are now “back.” Hollywood is back.
(Did I forget to mention that sex is back, too?) But Chalamet and his stylist Erin Walsh, whom the actor began working with last year during rollouts for his films The French Dispatch and Dune, certainly calculated the look to get the Twitter stans running for the hills. We saw a lot of skin on the carpet last night, and not in the way we normally do, from Kristen Stewart in sequined Chanel tap shorts to Zendaya in an ultra-cropped Valentino button down. The jacket, worn open in the front with lace-rimmed sleeves, showcased an entire arsenal of Cartier jewelry (the Maison named Timmy as an official “Friend of the House” last fall), and was cropped in the back with a scoop high enough to reveal his trousers’ V-shaped split waistband, fastened with an LV-monogrammed tab.

It only fell short in costume design, makeup, and hairstyling, where it was overshadowed by three-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven's '70s punk look for Emma Stone in Disney's Cruella and Best Actress winner Jessica Chastain's transformation into the infamous televangelist in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. The speeches were ultimately edited into the show. On Sunday night, Dune harnessed the Oscar power.
