Vertigo Releasing has Lauren Hadaway’s rowing thriller The Novice in 33 sites. That film opened to a substantial £4.7m in February 2020, topping the charts for two weeks. With box office takings for the top five titles having dropped for four weekends in a row, exhibitors will be hoping for a glut of new films to revive fortunes heading in to the Easter holidays. The third wide release of the weekend is Universal animation The Bad Guys, in 618 sites. Universal revealed a sneak look at the trailer at last year’s CineEurope in Barcelona in October. Paramount is opening Sonic 2 in 651 locations – a five percent increase on the 620 locations of 2020’s Sonic The Hedgehog.

'Sonic 2' Post-Credits Scene, Explained (CNET)

The Blue Blur's movie sequel features another classic Sega character cameo for people who stick around.

Shadow the Hedgehog, a Sonic rival that first appeared in 2001's Sonic Adventure 2. Using alien DNA to research immortality, Robotnik's grandfather created Shadow. Following the scientist's death, the military became fearful of Shadow and placed him in suspended animation. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 zipped into UK and Australian movie theaters this week, and will hit the US next Friday, April 8. "This is the confident sequel the original left me hoping for, with a sharper script and jokes that'll leave you giggling," I wrote in my CNET review. It's likely the same will happen in a Sonic sequel, though they might make some tweaks since that feels a bit too similar to Robotnik's manipulation of Knuckles. Like the first Sonic movie, it includes a post-credits scene hinting that a classic character will play a major role in the next one.

'Sonic 2' stars Ben Schwartz and James Marsden have reflected on the backlash faced by the character design of the first film.

We just want to get it right for the people who love this character.” I thought it was amazing for Jeff [Fowler] the director to come out and say, ‘We’re listening to you, we hear you, we’re making adjustments.’ I think that was pretty unprecedented. The overtime put into the new CGI obviously paid off in other ways too – with big money action scenes looking spectacular in slow-mo.

Sonic 2 ending explained: your biggest questions answered (GamesRadar+)

On top of that, there are still plenty of questions you might have while leaving the cinema. The film gets pretty deep into the weeds of Sonic lore and there ...

The likes of Amy Rose, Rogue, and *shudder* Charmy the Bee are all characters that could make the leap to cinema in the near-future. Much like with Knuckles in Sonic 2, Shadow’s function in a potential threequel should follow many of the same beats: a collision course with Sonic and a hunt for the Master Emerald, before learning the error of his ways. Knuckles aided in the effort to strike back at Robotnik, and the pair saved each other’s life too. If the movies follow the games, Shadow will lash out at the people of Earth after Maria’s death – all thanks to a convenient bout of memory loss. Unfortunately for Maria, she perishes on the space station where Shadow was built but, in her final moments, asks her new hedgehog friend to give the people of Earth a "chance to be happy." Robotnik has always had a scheme or two up his sleeve – but decided to dream bigger after he was imbued with the Master Emerald’s powers. The compass is then used to light the way to the Master Emerald on a now-activated island temple, which has levitated out of the ocean. The story goes: 50 years ago (just like in Sonic 2), Robotnik’s grandfather kickstarted the Shadow Project to help cure his granddaughter Maria’s Neuro-Immune Deficiency. The end result was Shadow, a hedgehog that could be used as an immortal weapon. Robotnik goes to crush the trio, but Sonic transforms into Super Sonic, saving the day and defeating Robotnik, who tumbles from the Egg Smasher and is presumed dead. As is always the case now in modern blockbusters, the finale wasn’t just a case of wrapping things up and sending everyone home happy. But first, to ensure we are on the same page, let’s quickly retrace our red-and-white steps and fly through the ending’s events in mach-speed fashion. Sonic, now joined by new BFF Tails, is out to stop them – and Robotnik’s not-so-secret plans of world domination.

Biggest new movies coming out in April: 'Morbius,' 'Sonic 2' (Business Insider)

Sony's latest Marvel movie, "Morbius," hits theaters this weekend, but critics have not been kind to the film.

What critics said: "Mostly, the film occupies a strange no-mans-land of the sprawling Spider-Verse, not charming like the Spider-Man films, not funny like the Venom films, and certainly not technically impressive like the animated 'Into the Spider-Verse.'" — Indiewire But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?" In a high-speed pursuit that never stops, Will and Danny must evade a massive, city-wide law enforcement response, keep their hostages alive, and somehow try not to kill each other, all while executing the most insane escape L. With a career built for this very moment, the seminal award-winning actor must take on the role of a lifetime: Nick Cage."What critics said: "The filmmakers pull from every corner of Cage's filmography to craft something transcendent." 'Sonic 2' review: sparky hedgehog returns with a slower-paced sequel (NME.com)

Minor characters like the bumbling Deputy Sheriff Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) and Robotnik’s sidekick Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) both contribute something different to the dynamic and help to break up lengthy scenes which focus on the main players. He gets rescued from exile on the Mushroom Planet by a new ally, Knuckles the Echinda (Idris Elba), and they seek an emerald which will give them untold power. Meanwhile, moustache-twirling villain Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is recovering from his climactic fight with Sonic at the end of the last movie.

Sonic 2 cements it: the hedgehog's transformation to film is the best ... (VG247)

With the sequel, Sonic has made the most successful jump from games to films ever. Alex Donaldson avatar. Review by Alex Donaldson Assistant Editor.

And now, Sonic. In a room full of the film’s target audience, the reaction seemed to be utter glee. The core story is fairly inconsequential – a globe-trotting romp that is serviceable but largely exists to facilitate Carrey’s scenery-chewing and the interactions of the three anthropomorphic heroes. And the future seems bright; a second golden age for the blue blur might be in its early stages. Much of this setup is probably owed to some degree to the way Marvel demonstrated a scalpel-precise way to weave different heroes together in their superhero crossovers. It doesn’t get in the way of the most important thing: this is a family film for kids, including those who have never even looked at ancient games that came out decades before they were born. It’s arguably down to the simplicity of the source material, but Sonic is able to elevate the most simple of the series concepts thanks to its medium. Their adoption of Sonic as a weird little alien son is central to the film’s themes, and it’s actually difficult to imagine this version of the Sonic lore without these characters continuing to play at least a minor role. The thing it told me about Sonic 2 was simple: I wasn’t just enjoying it because of laser-calibrated pricking of my decades-honed sense of Sonic fandom – I was enjoying it because it was a good film in its own right. When the humans make a return to the story, it feels like a natural segue. If you’d have told me that I’d be sitting in a screening of a second Sonic the Hedgehog film, on opening day, and hear the end of the film greeted with cheering easily as loud as those I heard at the closing of a midnight screening of Avengers Endgame, I’d never have believed you. A common sentiment with these films is to be annoyed that time is spent with humans rather than with Sonic – but perhaps the greatest trick Sonic 2 plays is fully bedding James Marsden and Tika Sumpter’s Tom and Maddie Wachowski, and their extended families, into the storyline of Sonic and his friends. I saw it in a real cinema, about two thirds full, the first showing near me, early-afternoon on release day, in a room full of the film’s intended audience – kids with parents, tweens, and the occasional older long-time fan.

Sonic 2 Post-Credits Scene & Sequel Villain Set-Up Explained (Screen Rant)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2's post-credits scene introduces an important character from the Sonic games. Here's everything you need to know about him.

Shadow's story is one of the richest in Sonic lore and offers several possibilities for Sonic 3. The black hedgehog at the end of Sonic 2 is Shadow, one of the most important characters in Sonic's mythology and a recurring character in several games and animations in the franchise. In addition to Sonic 3, Paramount has already announced a Knuckles spin-off starring Idris Elba for Paramount+. Given the vastness of Sonic’s universe and how well received the first film was, it's highly likely that new titles are added to that list. Shadow showing up in Sonic 2's post-credit scene may have surprised those who imagined that Metal Sonic, a Sonic-inspired robot created by Eggman as a way to destroy the hedgehog, would be the one to show up. The character first appeared in 2001's Sonic Adventures 2 as one of the main antagonists in the game, and would later star in its own game, Shadow the Hedgehog thanks to the character's growing popularity at the time. Shadow's memories of what Maria had said before she died were mixed up with a feeling of revenge, and the hedgehog went into a spiral of rage and destruction that placed him against Sonic. In some versions, for example, Shadow has even reached the speed of light. Shadow showing up in the Sonic movies was one of the most recurring theories among audiences, but it can't be said that it wasn't a surprise to see Sonic's famous rival being introduced so early in the franchise. Shadow was the result of an experiment led by Professor Gerald, Eggman's grandfather, who sought to create the perfect life form. Tails and Knuckles joined the franchise, and what was once a more realistic setting with Sonic as a part of it evolved into something closer to a video game world. The scene then goes on to reveal a Sonic-like creature being held in some sort of capsule, waking up from what appears to have been a long sleep. That said, Sonic 2 is still maintaining a certain sense of realism as set by the first film, including finding reasonable explanations for elements that the games usually overlooked.
