Will Liverpool take temporary top spot in the Premier League? Follow all the latest updates from the game at Anfield.

For Roy Hodgson and Watford the match represents a stiff test, but they can ill-afford to roll over with the relegation scrap entering its final weeks. With the two sides around 18th-placed Watford in the league – Everton above and Burnley below – meeting next week, the Hornets could find themselves slipping off the pace if they fail to take any points today. “Physically he should be fine,” Klopp said on Friday. “Now I have to make the decision about rhythm and these kinds of things.”

Liverpool take on Watford as Jurgen Klopp's side look to go top of the Premier League. A victory would see Liverpool move two points ahead of Manchester ...

Will Jurgen Klopp's side go top of the table or will Watford spring a surprise? Jurgen Klopp's side ran out 5-0 winners when these sides met at Vicarage Road earlier in the season, but they won't be taking anything for granted as It looks as if Gomez will be at right-back today as Alexander-Arnold is only on the bench. Watford have made it difficult for Jurgen Klopp's team at times, but as things stand Liverpool will be going top of the league. Watford then create a chance themselves, with the ball falling to Sarr, whose effort goes over. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones all start as Liverpool make four changes from their last Premier League game. Liverpool certainly have had things their own way and Kamara is working hard as he looks to stop Salah from making a major impact. Following the subsequent corner Cucho Hernandez requires treatment following a clash of heads. It's expected that Salah will be replaced soon, with Sadio Mane poised to enter the fray. Watford then miss an excellent chance, with Sarr playing in Joao Pedro, who drags his effort wide. 65 mins: Fabinho plays a neat pass in towards Salah, whose effort goes just over. 82 mins: Jurgen Klopp looks a little concerned, with victory still not secure for his side.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is fit for the bench in today's Premier League clash between Liverpool and Watford, as he nears the end of a hamstring injury.

James Milner is fit for the bench too after illness kept him out of action for a spell last month, while Naby Keita is absent due to a knee injury. The right-back suffered the problem ahead of last month’s FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest, ruling him out of England duty during the international break. In his place, Joe Gomez deputised at the City Ground and the defender continues at Anfield against Watford, with Alexander-Arnold among the substitutes.

Player ratings: 20 up for standout Liverpool star, but rare Watford ... (Teamtalk.com)

Liverpool moved top of the Premier League table ahead of Manchester City's clash with Burnley thanks to a 1-0 win over Watford at Anfield.

Cucho Hernandez: Glanced a header from an early corner straight at Alisson and mucked in defensively amid a clash of heads with Matip, who was steaming onto a header himself. Set Pedro up for his chance after the break. Ismaila Sarr: Blazed a half-volley well over early on and was quiet from there before the break. Made important tackles and passes and had Watford’s best chance when his shot was saved by Alisson. However, he had no intention to go for the ball when tackling Jota to the ground for Fabinho’s penalty. Continued to harry Salah with success in the second half. Great defensive header in the second half with Jota steaming in behind him. Diogo Jota: Initially had a hard time in his battle with Kiko Femenia and blazed his only half-chance over. Roberto Firmino: Nipped in with a few good tackles to get Liverpool on the transition going forwards, connecting midfield to attack. Thiago Alcantara: A composed presence for Liverpool in midfield with delicate touches and a range of effective passing. Poor again going forwards in the second half, but mucked in defensively when required. Missed a headed chance to make it 2-0 early in the second half. Joe Gomez: Enjoyed a solid first portion of the game, capped off by his brilliant cross for Jota’s opener.

Thiago, inevitably, was at the heart of the move, helping shift the ball out to the right flank. The competition for places at centre-back has made it difficult for Gomez to find regular minutes this season. At the start of a pivotal fortnight, Liverpool did what was required to ensure the Kop went home happy and Manchester City, at least for a little while, were eclipsed. For the third game in succession, Jota put Liverpool ahead mere moments after they threatened to fall behind. Ahead of them, while Curtis Jones floundered in midfield, Thiago Alcantara excelled with an all-action performance that at times had the crowd purring at his precision passing. In mitigation, with Benfica, City, Manchester United and Everton all to come this month, the Reds were perhaps wise to conserve as much as possible.
