Report and free match highlights from the 2021/22 Papa Johns Trophy final between Rotherham and Sutton at Wembley Stadium as extra time goals from Chiedozie ...
Extra-time was a little step too far for us and it's just gutting we couldn't see that through to win the trophy. Matt had a really organised team and, in fairness, I thought they were braver than us for the first half, we just looked really nervous and I don't know why. The long-serving Sutton midfielder swept home just after the break to restore his side's deserved lead and set them on the way to silverware in their first season as an EFL club. I thought second half we were a lot better and created enough chances to get back in it. And they were not prepared to rest on their laurels thereafter. But it soon became clear that was not the way proceedings were going to unfold.
Rotherham twice came from behind and needed a stoppage-time goal to send the Papa John's Trophy final to extra-time, where their class showed as they saw ...
The 2022 Papa Johns Trophy belongs to Rotherham United after a topsy-turvy 4-2 win over Sutton United at Wembley. For much of the contest EFL debutants ...
And again in 2017, when they beat Leeds United en-route to a last-16 meeting with Arsenal. Nevertheless, this game and indeed their run to the final continues a fine association with knock-out football for Sutton. The club wrote its name into footballing folklore when in 1989 they sealed a famous FA Cup win over Coventry City, then in the top flight and cup winners two years prior. This represented the South Londoners’ fourth trip to the National Stadium, but their first in a whopping 41 years. Add in this superb run in the EFL Trophy, in their first-ever taste of the tournament, and you cannot help but be staggered by Sutton's rise in recent years. They are attempting to seal promotion and maintain a quite remarkable yo-yo existence in recent years. They led 2-1 going into stoppage time only for Rotherham to level and send the game to extra time.
This is not the competition that will define whether Rotherham United deem this a successful season but after Jordi Osei-Tutu's 96th-minute equaliser ...
With their promotion quest on the back burner for the weekend, Rotherham came into this game as favourites but the League One leaders were faced with a team with little appetite to hang around League Two for long and seemingly no care for expectations. He was alert to prevent a deflected Wiles shot squeezing inside a post and then Rotherham squandered a couple of openings that it seemed would live with them on the journey home. A stunning strike by Chiedozie Ogbene, who recently scored for the Republic of Ireland against Belgium, registered Rotherham’s third goal of the afternoon to set them on their way to lifting the EFL Trophy before Michael Ihiekwe sealed the comeback against Sutton.

And with that, Rotherham are the first club to win the same competition at both the old and the new Wembley. League Two Sutton looked to have secured an unlikely win leading 2-1, before Jordi Osei-Tutu equalised in the 96th at Wembley. Underdogs Sutton were promoted to the English Football League for the first time last summer.
Irish international scored in extra-time in comeback win over Sutton United.
Ogbene took one touch to steady himself before dispatching a thunderous right-foot strike into the top corner six minutes into extra time and the defender Ihiekwe headed in to clinch victory in the fourth. He was alert to prevent a deflected Wiles shot squeezing inside a post and then Rotherham squandered a couple of openings that it seemed would live with them on the journey home. David Ajiboye did the leg work, storming forward and evading four red shirts before laying the ball on for Will Randall, who dragged wide.

Unsurprisingly given that body blow it was Rotherham who were on the front foot early in extra time, and Shane Ferguson's free kick was deflected just wide after Joe Kizzi had been booked for a foul on Ladapo. However U's then went close themselves as Kizzi returned a corner to the edge of the area and Beautyman shot just over, but within a minute Ogbene moved forward and lashed a right foot shot past Bouzanis from twenty yards. It was a sign that U's were growing in to the game the quicker, and just before the half hour reward came when, after Rob Milsom's corner had been cleared, Ajiboye's cross was laid back by Randall for Donovan Wilson, who steadied himself before firing low in to the net. Ladapo did test Bouzanis with a looping header just before U's lost Ben Goodliffe with a calf injury, Coby Rowe his replacement, and then had a golden chance when he was put clear through the middle but couldn't beat Bouzanis. Both sides then made wholesale changes for the last ten minutes, and it seemed as though U's had done enough, even in seven minutes of stoppage time, but just after Eastmond had been named Man of the Match, Ladapo sent the ball in to the area one last time and it fell for one of the late replacements, Osei-Tutu, and he found the top corner of the net.
Rotherham United came from behind twice to win the Papa Johns Trophy Final 2022, beating Sutton United 4-2 after extra-time.
The Rawmarsh-born number eight, who made his debut in the same competition in 2017, saw his effort loop over Sutton stopper Dean Bouzanis to ripple the net. It was Sutton who opened the scoring on the half-hour mark. The EFL debutants re-took the lead in the second period only for a 96th-minute strike to break Sutton hearts, as Rotherham went on to seal the silverware in the additional 30 minutes.
Rotherham United lifted the Papa Johns Trophy in spectacular fashion by coming out on top in a six-goal thriller with Sutton United, despite being behind twice, including with just seconds to go, before notching two goals in extra time.
Rotherham were now on top, and they took the game by the scruff of the neck when Johansson’s long punt was flicked on Smith, and with Ladapo involved, the ball was worked to Ogbene, who weighed up his options, before striking a lovely right-footed effort from distance which flashed past the outstretched hand of Bouzanis, to find the bottom corner of the net. Ladapo clipped a hopeful ball into the box, and a wayward last-ditch clearance fell kindly for Osei-Tutu, who got the ball from under his feet, to curl a left-footed effort which Bouzanis got a hand to, but neither he or a backtracking defender or two, could keep the ball out, as it arrowed into the top corner of the net. Wiles turned from finisher to provider with a lovely weighted through ball which split open the Sutton defence, and Ladapo showed his marker a clean pair of heels to bare down on goal but Bouzanis won the battle of wills in the one-on-one situation, as he kept out his left-footed effort with his legs. The Millers were looking for a way back into the game and it almost came when the two subs combined as Harding floated a cross which was met by the head of Ladapo, but Bouzanis plucked his effort out of the sky. Johansson punted the ball up field and Smith got the better of the aerial challenge while Kayode kept the ball alive, the ball rolled back to Wiles, who showed fleet of foot, to evade a Sutton challenge, before taking aim from distance, and he made no mistake, by curling a wonderful effort which dipped over Bouzanis, to find the heart of the Sutton goal. Milsom delivered another tantalising corner, which his favoured left-foot, and Rotherham only half cleared the danger, and Sutton played the ball back into the danger area, and Smith, in an unaccustomed defensive position, tried to bring the ball under his spell, but it was not the time or the place, and Randall took advantage to provide the assist for Wilson, who made no mistake to drill a sweet, left-footed effort, from just inside the box, which beat the outstretched hand of Johansson, to find the corner of the Rotherham net.

A worker with an outstanding attitude and a goal contributor - he is now in double figures for the season. Ben Wiles (Rotherham United) - Lit up Wembley with a brilliant goal to crown his first appearance there and had his manager waxing lyrical after the game. Salt-of-the-earth player and professional.
With one piece of silverware now in the bag, Rotherham United's Michael Ihiekwe is turning his attention back to the league. Stuart Rayner reports.
“We hadn’t really had a blip all season but we’ve had one now and that break should serve us well. One win in their last five league matches had whittled away the Millers’ lead at the top of League One, to the point where they kicked off at Wembley on Saturday only ahead of Wigan Athletic on goal difference and third-placed Milton Keynes Dons by a point. When Charlton Athletic visit the AESSEAL New York Stadium on Saturday it will be Rotherham’s first league match for three weeks which have also included an international break.
