Bruce Willis' Aphasia (MedPage Today)

"To Bruce's amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed ...

- Global aphasia results from severe and extensive damage to the language areas of the brain. Research has shown that language and communication abilities can continue to improve for many years and are sometimes accompanied by new activity in brain tissue near the damaged area. Broca's aphasia is the most common type of nonfluent aphasia. Wernicke's aphasia is the most common type of fluent aphasia. Recently, scientists are studying if this temporary alteration of brain activity might help people re-learn language use, and several clinical trials funded by NIDCD are currently testing these technologies. Aphasia may occur suddenly or progressively, depending on the type and location of brain tissue involved. Although it is primarily seen in individuals who have suffered a stroke, aphasia can also result from conditions such as a brain tumor, infection, inflammation, head injury, or dementia that affects language-associated regions of the brain. "Virtual" speech pathologists provide patients with the flexibility and convenience of getting therapy in their homes through a computer. Aphasia may co-occur with speech disorders, such as dysarthria or apraxia (the inability to put together the correct muscle movements to produce speech), which can also result from brain damage. It is estimated that about 1 million people in the U.S. today suffer from aphasia. This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. The Los Angeles Times reported that those who have worked with Willis recently have been concerned about his cognitive decline.

What's the Word on Aphasia? (HealthCentral.com)

Actor Bruce Willis has a condition that affects speech and comprehension. Our experts give the ABCs of this brain disorder. by Matt McMillen Health Writer.

“The symptoms get worse over time, due to the growth of the tumor or the spread of the dementia,” say Dr. Galvin. “Aphasia can result from disorders disrupting the center for understanding words and sentences, or the center for making and expressing them,” says Dr. Mendez. Why? Because the damage to your brain is static, meaning the aphasia won’t get worse, so your brain may be able to compensate for some of its lost functions through new activity in brain tissue near the damaged area, while the strategies you learn from your speech-language pathologist can help fill the gaps. “The calmer the person is, the better they can use the communication strategies they’ve learned.” Keep in mind that your loved one is struggling and that patience should not be in short supply. Encourage talking slowly, advises Dr. Dawson. Your loved one with aphasia will be able to enunciate better so that their words are clearer. If you have the ability to write, you can type your words into your tablet and let it speak the words for you. This causes the death of brain cells and permanent brain damage. Speech-language pathologists are the keystone of aphasia treatment, says Dr. Dawson. They design individual programs that address each person’s needs. Someone with this type of aphasia may also speak in short phrases rather than full sentences, dropping words like is, and, and the, per the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). We asked Dr. Galvin and other experts to unpack the specifics about this condition and how they may be related to why Willis is suddenly stepping away from the spotlight. While it can be diagnosed at any age, middle-aged and older adults have a higher risk, primarily because it results from health conditions that typically occur later in life, such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.

The announcement of actor Bruce Willis' aphasia diagnosis is raising awareness of a common condition that few people recognize.

One is an improv game where players pretend to audition for a movie and have to remember certain words but can get help from other players if necessary. “One of the clinical trials in this project uses free open-source flashcard software ( Anki) to provide aphasia treatment. One of the hallmarks of aphasia is its variability. In February, Evans received a five-year, $2.98 million National Institute of Health R01 clinical trial grant to improve aphasia treatment. A primary frustration for people with aphasia is anomia, or word-finding difficulty. For over a decade, Evans has been studying the language disorder and investigating methods to help people with aphasia improve their communication abilities.

"It has gotten to the point where I often just avoid interactions requiring me to speak."

My type of aphasia ― a result of the frontal lobe damage to my brain caused by my stroke ― is long-term. Always one to look for a silver lining, I tell myself the random jumble of words makes my writing more fun. I am also hopeful that coverage of his situation will lead to increased awareness of this condition and compassion for those affected by it. But I realize that’s the kind of spontaneity my editors would prefer to do without. I already suffered from social anxiety and a severe fear of public speaking even before aphasia entered the picture. Instead, it’s what happens when I struggle to think of words that seem forever stuck on the tip of my tongue, just barely out of reach. As a writer, words are my lifeblood, so when they went missing, it was a cataclysmic shift in my world. Soon, though, I had to get back to work and try to resume my normal routine. In the immediate aftermath, trying to regain my physical strength and abilities took all of my mental focus. Physical therapy helped me regain some of the strength and control of my right hand. The fact that I couldn’t use my right hand at all was impossible to ignore. I suffered a stroke in my sleep.
