West Ham, in claret and blue, take the knee, as do Lyon, in white and the Ligue 1 side kicks off, attacking from right to left. He sees Dembele's run and Aouar coming in off the left wing but overhits his cross. Dembele gets to it first, challenged by Zouma but can only divert it wide of the left post. Antonio drives towards the box and thumps a right-foot shot that is well blocked by the sliding Lukeba.

Peter Bosz is battling to prevent a first finish outside the top 10 since 1996, and defensive frailties have been a constant problem. The atmosphere will be rocking and, they hope, suffocating for Lyon, but manager David Moyes has urged his players to keep their heads and manage the game well. Lyon are particularly susceptible to the counter-attack, and West Ham will fancy their chances of doing the same tonight.
West Ham are looking to get to the semi-final of a major European competition since 1976 - when they defeated Eintracht Frankfurt over two legs. Omen?
I know we’ve slumped a little but we’re yet to disappoint in Europe and are coming off the back of a vital win! A key difference between the previous round and this is the fact that West Ham play at home in the first leg. This game is absolutely massive for our club and it’s a chance to write history for us. Lyon in my opinion, is a more beatable opposition than Sevilla so I really fancy our chances against the French side. INTERVIEW BY SIMON JONES: Oscar Garcia gives Sportsmail the inside track on how West Ham can combat Lyon ahead of their big Europa League quarter-final tie ...
They were in fact the first team this season to get a win at Lyon. That said, the West Ham squad has the ability to really make the French side suffer. The fact that the away goals rule is no longer in place means that both the home and away games are of equal importance. If West Ham manage to regain possession and play direct and into the spaces, they'll get a lot of joy. Meanwhile, if Lyon get the upper hand, they've got players who are capable of playing a through-ball and are a real threat on one-on-ones. He can dribble, shoot, defend, he's very strong with his back to goal, he's a complete player and he's showing all of his class here in France.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men have no time to lick domestic wounds as they aim for another memorable night in Europe.
But I think this Rangers side is different, we’re different as well, and when you go as far as the quarter-finals, both teams are favourites. Kemar Roofe didn't quite inspire in his place on Sunday afternoon. Van Bronckhorst has options to tweak his line-up and that could mean a return to the starting XI for Glen Kamara. Gusto did not do enough to stop Fornals and when the Spaniard prodded the ball on to Boateng it ran through to Bowen, whose messy shot hit the Lyon defender and bounced over Lopes. Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice struggled to keep the ball away from Tanguy Ndombele and Thiago Mendes, although there was hope on the break. The striker’s touch had taken him away from goal, while Zouma was covering, and it felt ludicrous that there was no intervention from VAR. West Ham refused to let it happen. There were possibilities when Lyon played through Houssem Aouar and the opening goal almost arrived when Lucas Paquetá broke down the left, only for Dembélé to turn the Brazilian’s cross wide. After all, Lyon were Champions League semi-finalists two years ago and, although their domestic form has been inconsistent this season, they remain an accomplished team and it quickly became clear that they were capable of making life uncomfortable for West Ham.

The Dutchman would switch to a back three – as John Lundstram dropped deeper from his midfield starting spot – at the beginning of the second half. Just seconds later, VAR came to the rescue for Rangers as Andre Horta’s effort was disallowed for a foul on Ryan Jack. Allan McGregor was beaten to his left and Braga had the goal that had been coming. They had been a noticeable, unmissable, presence in the city centre throughout the day, and were now making themselves heard as the action got underway. As supporters headed for the exits and sad farewell to Portugal, they could do so with hope in a tie that is very much in the balance. This was a very different occasion off the park and challenge on it.

BRAGA 1-0 RANGERS: They departed with hope of further Europa League progression still intact. They will have to dig it out at Ibrox next Thursday.
Balogun swung and missed in his botched attempt to cut out a ball into the centre of the area. The Dutchman decided on a change of shape for the second period. Braga sought to take advantage of Calvin Bassey’s positional wandering by switching long passes into the space behind the left-back. With a defender blocking the path for an immediate strike, he wriggled in vain to create space and was eventually denied. The ball was drilled over the bar to sum up an ineffectual first half shift. A clearer chance fell for Sakala. His initial touch was good, knocking the ball into space and setting up a left-foot drive. A minute later, Braga thought they were in front as Andre Horta’s shot deflected off James Tavernier to find to the net. Rangers were first to threaten as Arfield picked out Kent’s run into the area with a lovely pass. By the 25th minute, they’d struck the frame of the goal. There were only brief flickers of concern for Braga goalkeeper Matheus. Watching on, it was impossible not to acutely feel the absence of Alfredo Morelos. Braga had earlier been denied by VAR and struck a post, yet the hosts did not seem overly keen on pushing for more after the break. But the opportunity to reach the semi-finals is there.
Gio van Bronckhorst's Rangers travelled to Portugal to face Braga in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash.
A couple of changes from the hosts with 15 minutes to go ran down a few more minutes as Braga put in a composed performance to see out the game and head to Glasgow with a one-goal advantage. Rangers started to liven up a little after the changes as the game opened up a little and small gaps began to open up for the Gers to try play into. The hosts were forcing Rangers further and further back, forcing the Gers to pass the pall from side to side on the edge of their own box as the sting was taken out of the game. It was a huge let-off for Rangers and should have served as a wake-up call for the Light Blues after a couple of defensive lapses had gifted opportunities to the hosts. The 30-year-old would be fit to continue, albeit moving quite gingerly, as the Gers started to press Braga a bit higher up the pitch and putting the hosts under pressure deep in their own half of the pitch. Despite many Rangers fans feeling they just wanted to get the game out of the way in the days before, there was a real sense of anticipation by the time the game got underway in the picturesque ground known as The Quarry.
Braga 1-0 Rangers: The Scottish champions were beaten in Portugal and were perhaps fortunate the difference was only one goal.
Start your Independent Premium subscription today. In the 26th minute Andre Horta’s deflected shot from 16 yards found the net to the delight of the home fans but Italian referee Davide Massa looked at VAR and chalked it off for a Fabiano foul on Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack in the build-up. The Light Blues enjoyed some good fortune in the first half when the home side hit the post and had the ball in the net only for a VAR check to rule the goal out but eventually Spanish striker Abel Ruiz opened the scoring in the 40th minute and it proved to be the difference.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side fell to an Abel Ruiz goal but can still bounce back in next week's second leg at Ibrox.
Trusting in depth was at odds with how Van Bronckhorst used only two subs from a possible five in defeat to Celtic and it was the same pair who came off the bench there who started here, with the addition of Kamara into midfield. Horta did have the ball in the net a minute later, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Ryan Jack in the build-up. Rangers failed to deal with a deep cross and the ball broke to Horta to slam against the post with the goal at his mercy. The pace of that pair was clearly spooking Braga and Rangers had the better of the opening exchanges without troubling Matheus in the home goal. And it was the visitors who threatened first, with Sakala snatching at a rebound after Kent had been played in and denied by a swarm of red and white shirts. Anticipation for a mammoth occasion in the club's history was dampened by a devastating defeat to Celtic in the Premiership title race at the weekend.
It was a hugely eventful night of Europa League action as the first legs of all four quarter finals were played out with both Barcelona and West Ham in the ...
Rangers will still fancy themselves to rescue the tie in the second leg but this was another underwhelming and disappointing showing. While there would have been hopes that they could have used that frustration to rally in Portugal, it was another low-key performance that has given them plenty of work to do for next week’s return leg in Glasgow. Lyon slowly began to dominate possession and the territory in the game, so it was no great surprise that they equalised midway through the second half. So furious was David Moyes with the incident, that he berated German official Felix Zwayer on his way off the pitch at the break – for which the Scotsman was booked. Yet despite plenty of eye-catching link-up play in the final third, Barca struggled to regularly breach the Frankfurt defence. Both were involved in a scintillating one-touch passing move which cut open Frankfurt’s defence and allowed Ferran Torres to run through on goal and slot home the equaliser.
Gio van Bronckhorst will hope to navigate two legs against Braga to face either the the Serie A or Bundesliga side.
However, from the following corner Orban would put the ball into the net to level the game with a deflection off of Atalanta man David Zappacosta. A moment of brilliance from Luis Muriel separates the side going into the second leg. The forward cut in from the right flank and shrugged off the challenges from the home defence, before unleashing a thunderbolt into the top corner.

West Ham 1-1 Lyon: Jarrod Bowen's goal was cancelled out by Tanguy Ndombele after Aaron Cresswell was sent off on the stroke of half-time.
With five minutes left, a promising West Ham counter was halted by a pitch invader Fornals was only able to nudge the ball into the Lyon box, but it was there that Boateng miscontrolled it, allowing Bowen to pounce. Antonio was isolated but still managed to bring his teammates up the pitch, and – against the odds – the opening goal went West Ham’s way. With Fornals frequently feeding Benrahma out on the left, West Ham were starting to hit their stride. The striker, however, hurdled the goalkeeper, not wishing to hurt him. Nothing came of the set-piece, but a later corner saw Jarrod Bowen pick out an unmarked, onrushing Declan Rice, who almost passed the ball into the net with a precise but under-powered effort.
Ansgar Knauff had given Eintracht Frankfurt the lead against Barcelona before being pegged back, while Bødo/Glimt beat Roma 2-1 in Conference League.
Frankfurt soaked up the pressure early on, hoping to hit Barça on the break, but were in danger after three minutes when Kevin Trapp tipped Torres’s shot over the bar. Marseille hold the same advantage over Greece’s Paok Salonika, despite playing the closing moments with 10 men after Gerson was sent off four minutes into added-on time. The sides then traded goals with Yira Sor giving Prague the lead in the 67th minute, only for Argentinian defender Marcos Senesi to equalise.
West Ham are one win from the Europa League semi-finals after a resolute performance from ten men held Lyon to a draw in London.
Moyes and his players were dumbstruck. Areola saved from Lucas Paqueta and Emerson Palmeri while Kurt Zouma and Craig Dawson were robust in dealing with Dembele. Moyes takes pride in his side having a backbone these days and they were able to show it here. The home fans partied as they had here last month against Sevilla, chants of “West Ham are massive” once again echoing around. A slight touch from Alphonse Areola sent it into Ryan Fredericks, who blocked and could only watch as the impressive Tottenham loanee Ndomele poked home a leveller. Lyon recovered but gave possession up cheaply to Pablo Fornals on the edge of the box.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side were beaten 1-0 in their quarter-final first leg clash.
McGregor only had one save to make in the second half but did the necessary, pushing Andre Horta’s drive behind for a corner. It was a howler from Leon Balogun as he swiped at fresh air, allowing Iuri Medeiros’ cross to reach Ruiz, who punished error with a clinical finish beyond McGregor at the near post. A half-time rejig saw van Bronckhorst shunt John Lundstram back into a three-man defence when Braga were in possession. And the similarities didn’t extend to the manner of their defensive display. Braga had to hold their own breath on a couple of times as Jack sent Kent and then Sakala racing in behind but neither could take advantage. But it quickly became evident they were struggling to shake off their Old Firm anguish.
Against all odds, West Ham United's Europa League dreams are still alive and kicking thanks to a dogged, determined display at London Stadium. David...
The overlapping Emerson let fly with a low, angled shot to force a sound save from Areola, while at the other end a promising West Ham counter-attack was brought to an abrupt halt by a pitch invader – the second of the evening - much to the annoyance of the home support. Antonio and Bowen then received late cautions as the tiring 10 men held out to ensure that the Hammers cross the English Channel next Thursday still with everything to play for at the Groupama Stadium. Moyes – who was shown a yellow card for disputing that decision as the teams headed for the tunnel - replaced the unfortunate Benrahma with Ben Johnson for the restart as West Ham contemplated an uphill second-half battle with just 10 men. Michail Antonio, who had earlier run out of gas at the vital moment, again found himself bursting into the area before inexplicably hurdling both the Lyon keeper and the ball and a wonderful opportunity to double West Ham’s lead was lost. Referee Felix Zwayer had already made a string of curious calls but he now became an instant East End villain, producing an instant red card for the Hammers left-back, who departed shaking his head and seconds later, the German official left for the interval with claret and blue boos ringing in his ears. But on an evening when Moyes’ boys showed grit and guts in abundance, unbeaten and unbowed they then took a 52nd-minute lead through on-fire Jarrod Bowen, who raised the roof with his 14th goal of an incredible campaign.

Atalanta succeeded in cutting Leipzig's supply lines for much of the encounter, and will look to seize the game by the throat in the second leg, though their guests may have similar ideas.
