Pakistan court rules blocking vote to oust PM Imran Khan illegal (Aljazeera.com)

PM Imran Khan's opponents had the votes needed to remove him in parliament after members of his own party defected.

The army has seized power and ruled for more than half of Pakistan’s 75-year history. His opponents had garnered the 172 votes needed to oust him in the 342-seat house after several members of his own party and a key coalition partner defected. “[But] this is actually one thing that our party has been fighting for. “We will have a coalition government of the opposition forces and we will build bridges, and we will take Pakistan out of this economic meltdown that this outgoing government brought us.” Khan will now face a no-confidence vote by lawmakers that he had tried to sidestep. The move “is declared to be contrary to the constitution and of no legal effect and is set aside”, the court ruled.

This could spell trouble for Mr Khan, regardless of whether his fate is handed back to parliament, or to the polls. A new government, probably a broad coalition led by Shehbaz Sharif, the brother of Mr Khan’s predecessor Nawaz Sharif, would then be in charge. The crisis has flared quickly and reflects a rapid downturn in Mr Khan’s fortunes. The Supreme Court was called in to umpire the mess. They said Mr Khan had violated the constitution by getting the deputy speaker of the assembly, a close ally, to quash the vote on vague grounds of a national security threat.
