More Tesco petrol stations in Northern Ireland have been forced to ask customers to look elsewhere for their fuel, after running out during the week.

More than 100,000 people have signed a petition calling for further cuts to fuel duty. Petrol was 161.7p, down from 165.1p on March 24. A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, "Some of our pumps at our Forestside petrol filling station are temporarily closed. Reasons can include when the fuel was purchased, the volume purchased at a certain price and the business model of the station which may offer discounts to entice customers into the shop. He explained that the cost of petrol and diesel is determined by a broad range of factors, meaning some retailers will have the ability to cut prices more quickly than others. The Consumer Council of Northern Ireland said last week that the average price of petrol and diesel had dropped by 3.4p and 1.9p respectively.

Why is there a fuel shortage? What's causing the latest diesel supply ... (iNews)

The shortage had been caused by climate protests blocking major fuel depots, exacerbating existing supply issues due to increased demand post-Covid ...

If the prices go higher, it could force private diesel car owners to reduce driving,” said Cuneyt Kazokoglu, head of oil demand analysis at FGE. This is the first time in history. This will eventually result in further hikes in prices at the pumps. “A 5p cut in duty should, in theory, have led to a 6p cut in prices at the pumps as a result of the government taking less VAT, but that is on the basis that wholesale prices stay still – which is hardly ever the case – and retailers passing on their reduced costs to drivers fairly. “The fact pump prices have fallen so little reflects the fact that the cost to retailers of buying fuel had been going up ahead of the Spring Statement. New record fuel prices are likely anytime soon.” There’s just an imbalance between supply and demand.” On top of this, fuel is traded in dollars like oil and the exchange rate is $1.35 to the pound meaning drivers could be looking at a steep incline in costs. Oil production is still out of kilter with production as life is becoming more normal with people now driving more again and moving around the world, all of which has caused the oil price to rise. The cost of filling a family car with petrol was a third higher in March than in 2021, according to RAC’s Fuel Watch. “The demand for diesel has been very strong up until the crisis, and that also contributed to that. Diesel supplies were already tight, as global stocks of diesel and other middle distillates have fallen to the lowest seasonal level since 2008, due to refinery shutdowns during the start of the pandemic and a rise in demand since.

The last fuel crisis in the UK was in autumn last year and occurred after BP announced it had a shortage of tanker drivers and would struggle to fulfil some deliveries. A statement from the UK Government explained: "The phasing out of imports will not be immediate, but instead allows the UK more than enough time to adjust supply chains, supporting industry and consumers. The government will work with companies through a new Taskforce on Oil to support them to make use of this period in finding alternative supplies. The delay in the payment caused thousands of people to flock to their nearest fuel-station and panic-buy, as reported by Bloomberg. In the UK, there is no fuel shortage. Responding to a customer's complaint on social media, Sainsbury's said: "We're experiencing high demand for fuel and some pumps at our Harlow petrol filling station are temporarily closed.

Why diesel is running out before petrol at UK fuel stations (WalesOnline)

Among the places most affected by issues in petrol and diesel being delivered to fuel stations, several Birmingham petrol stations have completely run out of fuel, our sister site BirminghamLive reports. Whilst some parts of the UK have seen issues with the delivery of both petrol and diesel, some drivers say diesel is running out before petrol at fuel stations. This is because two major UK campaign groups have decided to stop the transport of petrol across the UK, in a protest against the UK government over climate change and fossil fuels.

If there is a small bar that means it is less busy than usual and could be out of fuel. It is essentially the same as the “white” diesel used in cars and other road vehicles, but is so called because it has been a requirement since 1961 for it to be marked with a red dye to prevent its misuse. In France, industries can benefit from a government subsidy that helps with the cost of fuel, and in Spain the government has pledged to lower taxes at state-run ports, and is offering low interest loans to help sectors affected by rising costs. The Shetland Fishermen’s Association (SFA) issued a plea to the Government as it said the war in Ukraine had seen the cost of marine diesel in the islands more than double in comparison to last year. There’s just an imbalance between supply and demand.” Red diesel is the term used for diesel that is intended for use other than as fuel in road vehicles - think agricultural or construction vehicles such as tractors, excavators, cranes and some other non-road applications such as boats. This will show you how busy they are. While diesel cars can run safely on the fuel, it is against the law to use it in any road-going vehicle. This has had a knock on effect on the availability of diesel at the pumps, as fuel deliveries were delayed. It brings back memories of 2021 where there were queues of cars snaking from the forecourt in a rush to top up on fuel in the midst of rising prices and an apparent shortage. The RAC said the average cost of a litre of diesel at UK forecourts rose by 22.1p to end March at 177.3p, the largest monthly spike in pump prices on record. The areas most affected by diesel shortages are in the southeast of England, but motorists have reported not being able to find diesel at fuel stations in regions such as Birmingham, the Black Country, Worcestershire, and Staffordshire.
