Is the London Stadium beginning to feel like home for West Ham fans? (The Guardian)

West Ham are “massive” to quote the chant of the moment – and so, surprisingly, was the London Stadium in the memorable Europa League win against Sevilla.

Memories are being made, such as a tearful Andriy Yarmolenko scoring against Villa and raising his hands to the sky. In the Covid season of 2020-21 Moyes started to make dramatic progress. The nadir for the London Stadium was the pitch invasion during a 3-0 home defeat to Burnley in March 2018. It was not, as some feared, a shagpile offcut from Sullivan’s home, but a claret surround with the club’s name emblazoned at the sides. Another problem was how to cover the athletics track. The diehards had many complaints: the distance from the pitch, plastic fans, the long walk from Stratford and the sale of popcorn.

Peter Bosz is battling to prevent a first finish outside the top 10 since 1996, and defensive frailties have been a constant problem. The atmosphere will be rocking and, they hope, suffocating for Lyon, but manager David Moyes has urged his players to keep their heads and manage the game well. Lyon are particularly susceptible to the counter-attack, and West Ham will fancy their chances of doing the same tonight.

The Green Street Hammers Predict: West Ham vs Lyon (Green Street Hammers)

West Ham are looking to get to the semi-final of a major European competition since 1976 - when they defeated Eintracht Frankfurt over two legs. Omen?

I know we’ve slumped a little but we’re yet to disappoint in Europe and are coming off the back of a vital win! A key difference between the previous round and this is the fact that West Ham play at home in the first leg. This game is absolutely massive for our club and it’s a chance to write history for us. Lyon in my opinion, is a more beatable opposition than Sevilla so I really fancy our chances against the French side. West Ham vs Lyon: Europa League predictions as the Hammers look to get to a semi-final of a major European competition for the first time since 1976. The players know the atmosphere and power the crowd will bring, which will hopefully spur them on to comfortably win the game.

West Ham vs Lyon: Why Moussa Dembele and Co. can burst ... (Sky Sports)

West Ham face Lyon in the quarter-finals of the Europa League; first leg at the London Stadium is on Thursday night with second leg in France on April 14; ...

This would not only be a big boom for Lyon but for French football as well and I think they'll be motivated by that. He's one of the players who I think felt like it was time for him to move on but didn't get that move. I definitely think ability down the wings is something that West Ham can look to capitalise on. They've certainly got more forward-thinking players now that they've moved Bruno Guimaraes on to Newcastle and brought in Faivre who has hit the ground running. But otherwise, I don't see Lyon being able to afford bringing in Ndombele, and certainly not if they fail to land Champions League football. Juventus were very strongly interested in him and his form has really gone off the boil since. It's just a question of whether they feel like putting in a performance, but I think they'll be highly motivated across these two legs against West Ham. I think there's a lot of complacency within the squad. I'm sure West Ham fans will remember Moussa Dembele from his time in England and also in Scotland; he's started to come into a bit of form. He's coming through at the moment and one of the latest academy gems. It definitely hasn't been a disaster. The appointment of Peter Bosz hasn't worked out, there's been well-documented issues within the club at leadership level, so it's quite an unbalanced ship at this moment in time.

They were in fact the first team this season to get a win at Lyon. That said, the West Ham squad has the ability to really make the French side suffer. The fact that the away goals rule is no longer in place means that both the home and away games are of equal importance. If West Ham manage to regain possession and play direct and into the spaces, they'll get a lot of joy. Meanwhile, if Lyon get the upper hand, they've got players who are capable of playing a through-ball and are a real threat on one-on-ones. He can dribble, shoot, defend, he's very strong with his back to goal, he's a complete player and he's showing all of his class here in France.

It would be interesting to see how West Ham would use St Juste, he wouldn’t suit their physical style under David Moyes, but his pace could be well-suited to a back three or even a shift to full-back in this side. Indeed, according to the Bundesliga’s official website, St Juste is one of the fastest players in Bundesliga history, he clocked a speed of 36.63 km/h this season, and that would make him the second-fastest player in the Premier League, behind only Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger. Standing at just 6ft, he’s not the biggest centre-back on the planet, and he would certainly be different to the likes of Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Europa League quarter-final first leg between West Ham United and Lyon from London Stadium.

The referee, already whistle happy, decides it is denying a clear goalscoring opportunity and is distraught as he walks off. That seems to have livened things up a little. But I find that quite difficult considering we are relative newcomers. Cresswell's red card will have changed the complexion of the second half before it begins though. He is battered by objects thrown from the crowd as stewards drag away. West Ham are attacking and have free men up but a supporter decides to invade the pitch bringing the game to a halt.

Gusto did not do enough to stop Fornals and when the Spaniard prodded the ball on to Boateng it ran through to Bowen, whose messy shot hit the Lyon defender and bounced over Lopes. Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice struggled to keep the ball away from Tanguy Ndombele and Thiago Mendes, although there was hope on the break. The striker’s touch had taken him away from goal, while Zouma was covering, and it felt ludicrous that there was no intervention from VAR. West Ham refused to let it happen. There were possibilities when Lyon played through Houssem Aouar and the opening goal almost arrived when Lucas Paquetá broke down the left, only for Dembélé to turn the Brazilian’s cross wide. After all, Lyon were Champions League semi-finalists two years ago and, although their domestic form has been inconsistent this season, they remain an accomplished team and it quickly became clear that they were capable of making life uncomfortable for West Ham.

West Ham player ratings vs Lyon: Jarrod Bowen steps up after ... (Football.London)

The Europa League quarter-final is in the balance after first leg ends 1-1 at London Stadium.

Looked isolated for much of the second half but played a vital role in the build up to Bowen's opener. Said Benrahma Had the hosts' first chance when running on to a long diagonal pass only to see his effort saved from a tight angle and West Ham attempted that trick on another couple of occasions, twice leading to corners. With only the goalkeeper to beat he made no mistake, converting from about eight yards. Left with a bloody nose late on before making a sliding tackle that drew the second loudest roar of the match in added time. Ryan Fredericks Kept his place in the team because David Moyes was wary of Karl Toko Ekambi's pace, only for the competition's top scorer to start on the bench. Alphonse Areola The only change from Sunday's win over Everton. Hard to point a finger of blame for Tanguy Ndombele's equaliser but fortunate not to be punished when spilling a Lucas Paqueta shot 12 minutes from time.

West Ham 1-1 Lyon: Jarrod Bowen's goal was cancelled out by Tanguy Ndombele after Aaron Cresswell was sent off on the stroke of half-time.

With five minutes left, a promising West Ham counter was halted by a pitch invader Fornals was only able to nudge the ball into the Lyon box, but it was there that Boateng miscontrolled it, allowing Bowen to pounce. Antonio was isolated but still managed to bring his teammates up the pitch, and – against the odds – the opening goal went West Ham’s way. With Fornals frequently feeding Benrahma out on the left, West Ham were starting to hit their stride. The striker, however, hurdled the goalkeeper, not wishing to hurt him. Nothing came of the set-piece, but a later corner saw Jarrod Bowen pick out an unmarked, onrushing Declan Rice, who almost passed the ball into the net with a precise but under-powered effort.

West Ham are one win from the Europa League semi-finals after a resolute performance from ten men held Lyon to a draw in London.

Moyes and his players were dumbstruck. Areola saved from Lucas Paqueta and Emerson Palmeri while Kurt Zouma and Craig Dawson were robust in dealing with Dembele. Moyes takes pride in his side having a backbone these days and they were able to show it here. The home fans partied as they had here last month against Sevilla, chants of “West Ham are massive” once again echoing around. A slight touch from Alphonse Areola sent it into Ryan Fredericks, who blocked and could only watch as the impressive Tottenham loanee Ndomele poked home a leveller. Lyon recovered but gave possession up cheaply to Pablo Fornals on the edge of the box.
