Masters 2022: How Cameron Smith's 12th-hole disaster probably ... (GolfDigest.com)

AUGUSTA, Ga. — You could hear the entire continent of Australia groan as Cameron Smith's tee shot on No. 12 splashed into Rae's Creek during the final round ...

To the Aussie's credit, he eventually bounced back with back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 on his way to a T-3 finish. Even more so after Smith birdied the first two holes on Sunday as the final pairing distanced itself from the rest of the field. That's because as the Action Network's Darren Rovell reported earlier on Sunday, someone had bet on Smith and Scottie Scheffler to finish 1-2 at Augusta National this week.

The Masters live: Scottie Scheffler wins at Augusta National, from ... (ABC News)

American Scottie Scheffler shows why he is the world's number one men's golfer, winning the Masters at Augusta National from Rory McIlroy, as Cameron ...

It really doesn't get any better than that. Just about a tap in. He finds the green and keeps it on the right level. He is a truly great golfer, one of the very best in the world. Smith birdied the first two to pull within a shot of Scheffler, only for Scottie to chip in for birdie at the third to flip the script straight back. He's not the first, he certainly won't be the last. A couple of lucky breaks here and there and I'm sure I'll be putting the green jacket on one day. It was a perfect nine iron, and just a really bad swing. It's emotional just getting into this field, so to win is so special for all of them. Thank you so much for your company this morning. By Dean Bilton But the 12th, as it has so many times in Masters history, was decisive.

The weight loss routine Masters contender Cameron Smith used to ... (Golf.com)

Cameron Smith is one of the Tour's best putters. But the changes he's made off the course have been equally key to his success.

“I lost a little bit of weight and my body moves a little bit quicker when I don’t have so much around my belly.” It started with a three-month offseason workout routine. It helped him gain about 10 yards per drive (from a 286 average to 297 yards).

Cameron Smith falls victim to dreaded 12th-hole Masters meltdown (Larry Brown Sports)

Cameron Smith fell victim to the 12th hole at Augusta National when he lost to Scottie Scheffler at the 2022 Masters.

Smith has officially joined a long list of players who learned that the hard way. Several players who were at or near the top of the leaderboard in 2019 did the same thing as Smith, which allowed Tiger Woods to capture his fifth green jacket. Even when he looked like he was in trouble during the final round, he managed to pull off one of the most amazing shots of the tournament.

Masters leaderboard 2022, day 3: Saturday highlights as Cam Smith ... (iNews)

Scottie Scheffler appeared to be running away with the green jacket but a difficult final few holes means it is all to play for on Sunday.

A second bogey at 6 was followed by a birdie at 7, bogey at 12, birdie at 13. It was cold and the ball was not travelling very far. Shane Lowry and Charl Schwartzel, who also started the day joint second, slipped to a share of third on two under par. Rory McIlroy joined him on that number after breaking par for the first time this week. The long-suffering Everton fan saw his team beat Manchester United in the morning then fired one of the few rounds in red numbers. It was some recovery, powering his ball up the hill and through the back of the green. Danny Willett, who overturned a five-shot deficit to win from the pack six years ago, starts nine adrift on level par after a commendable 73. I hit a really good shot and had a nice up-and-down.” “And then we saw the guy with the flag that always finds the balls kind of panicking. “Goodness me, I didn’t see that one coming,” Sir Nick Faldo said up in the CBS commentary box. He drew the driver and promptly speared his tee shot left into the trees. He had a laser-eyed official to thank for bailing him out.

Masters 2022 leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler holds off a remarkable ... (iNews)

The world No 1 golfer started Sunday with a three-shot lead over Cameron Smith but it was Rory McIlroy who ended up being his closest challenger, ...

With Scheffler reaching 11 under par at the seventh and maintaining a steadfast approach he held McIlroy comfortably at arms’ length. This was the burden Scheffler was condemned to carry on the final day. Only Tiger Woods rocks Augusta more than McIlroy on this form, witness the eruptions detonated by his chip-in birdies at seven and ten, not to mention the eagle at 13 to take him to six under par. The Australian would halve the gap with another strike against par at the second, and when Scheffler again found trouble off the tee at the third it looked for all the world his lead would disappear. It was the kind of round we thought McIlroy had left behind, a bogey-free assault on the senses as well as the golf course. Imagine being Scheffler, walking to the first tee with a three-shot lead.
