Prince Charles Marks First Anniversary of Prince Philip's Death with ... (PEOPLE.com)

Prince Charles shared three photos of Prince Philip to mark the first anniversary of his death, including a black-and-white snap from Charles's childhood.

The death of Prince Philip coincides with a special day for Prince Charles and Camilla — their wedding anniversary. A larger memorial service was held last week at Westminster Abbey, providing an opportunity for representatives of the many charities and organizations that Prince Philip worked with to pay tribute to him. Eight days after Philip's death, a funeral was held at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle on April 17 with attendance limited to just 30 family members and close friends due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The two couples share a laugh and exchange smiles in the snap. Queen Elizabeth is also seen in the joyous picture, watching on and making sure one of their pet dogs doesn't get in the way. The Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen's husband of 73 years, was 99 when he died of old age on April 9, 2021.

In addition to the video, Clarence House also paid tribute to Philip on the first anniversary of his death with three photos of the late Duke, which were captioned: “Remembering The Duke of Edinburgh today, one year since his passing.” To study their hands at rest was to picture maps showing hachured valleys and indigo streams, schemes of old campaigns and reconnaissance missions. But for now, a cold April’s closing moments parachute slowly home, so by mid-afternoon snow is recast as seed heads and thistledown.” On such an occasion to presume to eulogise one man is to pipe up for a whole generation - that crew whose survival was always the stuff of minor miracle, who came ashore in orange-crate coracles, fought ingenious wars, finagled triumphs at sea with flaming decoy boats, and side-stepped torpedoes.” The poem titled “The Patriarchs – An Elegy” was set to a montage of photos of the late Duke of Edinburgh, including snapshots of Philip with his wife, children and great-grandchildren. What their secrets were was everyone’s guess and nobody’s business.

A statement on the Royal website explains: "The Royal Family name of Windsor was confirmed by The Queen after her accession in 1952. At the time, Philip reportedly said: "I am nothing but a bloody amoeba. However, in 1960, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh decided that they would like their own direct descendants to be distinguished from the rest of the Royal Family (without changing the name of the Royal House), as Windsor is the surname used by all the male and unmarried female descendants of George V. In the end, the Queen decided to support her family's views and the name Windsor was used. However, when Elizabeth went on to become Queen in 1952, she had to confirm the official surname of the Royal Family and many wanted her to continue using Windsor, instead of changing it to Mountbatten. Before marrying The Queen and becoming the Duke of Edinburgh, Philip's official title was Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg.
