Everyone is welcome to attend Vaisakhi Day parades and the celebrations attract Canadians from every religious and cultural background. There are numerous other cities across Canada celebrating the Vaisakhi Day with parades involving 10,000 to 20,000 participants each. For Canadian Sikhs, Vaisakhi is a special time to celebrate and share their faith and their heritage with their friends and neighbours. The Sikh community in Vancouver is the one of the oldest, largest and influential across Canada who started arriving and settling in the late 19th century.

To celebrate, Sikhs visit places of worship called the Gurdwara for a morning ceremony, where people of all faiths are welcome. Sikhs also wear colourful and traditional Indian clothes, usually in shades of orange and blue to represent the colours of Sikhism. The celebration usually ends with a special evening meal with family and friends and the gifting of Indian sweets and money. Taking place on Thursday 14 April and celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus around the world, Vaisakhi also known as Baisakhi is a traditional harvest festival and one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar.

Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi by going to the Gurdwara (place of worship) and performing selfless service. Mandeep Singh, Sikh studies coordinator and teacher at the school, is grateful that Vaisakhi is finally back.

Usually, worshippers will attend the Gurdwara, or Sikh temple, in the morning and listen to prayers. He is part of a team that has the capacity to feed 2,000 people - but he adds in an attitude typical of the Sikh community that they would be able to surpass that capacity. It is not the Sikh New Year, which is celebrated in mid March according to the Sikh Calendar. In the UK, initiated Sikhs are allowed to wear a Kirpan and use it in religious ceremonies. The Khalsa is a group of initiated Sikhs (both male and female) who are leaders of the Sikh faith and are sworn to protect those less fortunate - irrespective of religion or caste. Sikhs across Manchester and beyond have come together to celebrate Vaisakhi, one of the holiest days in the Sikh calendar.
