Fulham: Why pragmatic Brentford offer rivals ideal blueprint for ... (Evening Standard)

Two years later, there was a resolve to do things markedly differently, with an appreciable but perhaps naive emphasis on fewer and shrewder acquisitions and more faith placed in the players that had won promotion. Comparisons with Norwich, similarly expansive and expressive in winning the Championship last year, are inevitable, since the pair appear to be locked in some sort of perpetual division-trading phenomena. There is little doubt that they represent the best of the three recent promotion-winning Fulham sides.

The Championship clash could see the Cottagers seal promotion back to the Premier League with a victory.

This was due to Fulham taking on Derby County at 8pm on Good Friday, and the Cottagers wanting the clash against North End moved as a result of their late arrival back home. Don't miss a thing from the club you love! Should Marco Silva's men pick up three points and inflict defeat on North End, then they will book their place in the top flight for the 2022/23 campaign.

Fulham FC promoted to Premier League: Can Cottagers stay up this ... (Sporting News)

Tony's dealings this coming summer will be a major focus for Fulham fans, and could be critical in the club's Premier League survival. In addition, Marco Silva and the club must sit down this summer and construct a Premier League tactical plan. Now, the club has seemingly perfected that style of play, but once again, a move up to the Premier League begs the question: Will Fulham give the possession style another go in the top flight, or change course to a more traditional counter-attacking side typical of newly promoted clubs? Players like Harrison Reed, Bobby Reid, and Tom Cairney had revivals in the Championship, but it's hard to forget how poor they were just a year prior in the top flight as regulars in the squad. His record-breaking Championship campaign proves he still has the cutting edge, but across three Premier League campaigns with Fulham and Newcastle, he has not been up to standards. A host of current players have already proven they don't belong in the Premier League, and improvements will be needed. Fulham stayed in the Premier League for 13 seasons, enjoying its greatest success through 2008-2012 that included a seventh-place finish and an appearance in the Europa League final, until it was relegated in 2014. It has been a season to remember for manager Marco Silva and Fulham, scoring an insane amount of goals in the chase for a Premier League place. Silva managed to take Parker's vision of Fulham as a possession team — which never truly came to fruition in the Premier League — and mold it into a reality in the Championship. Fulham held an average of 60.6 percent possession through the Championship season, completing a stunning 457 passes per game. Out of contract players include American defender Tim Ream, midfield maestro Jean-Michel Seri, and center-back Alfie Mawson. Ream is expected to leave the club, as he has proven below Premier League levels in both recent relegation campaigns. After relegation from the top flight in 1968, Fulham languished for decades in the lower leagues. A slight dip in late September saw the club drop to fifth place, but it quickly recovered and was top by late November, never again relinquishing its lead.

Marco Silva's got the win they needed to secure promotion as Aleksandar Mitrovic took his Championship goal tally to 40.

We have to prepare for the big challenge ahead of us.” Emblematic of his club, Mitrovic is highly potent in the Championship and yet has usually disappointed in the higher echelon. The second half began almost like the first, Rodak making a fine save from Archer before Mitrovic lost to Iversen in a one-on-one duel. We have to be really positive, we have to have desire and ambition.” With two goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic taking him to 40 for the season and another from Fabio Carvalho, two stars of the campaign made sure Fulham achieved their objective for the season. Neat play between Mitrovic and the Liverpool-bound Carvalho might have resulted in a second in the 25th minute, only for the teenager to fire wide.

As for which clubs Fulham could be replacing in the Premier League, two of Silva’s former employers are in the mix. Its return to the Premier League was short-lived once again, with relegation in ’20-21, but it proved resilient—and dominant—in the second tier this season, never truly having its latest promotion effort in any kind of jeopardy. Whether that will be enough to reinforce the club—and find a suitable replacement for talented 19-year-old attacking star Fábio Carvalho, who is expected to leave for Liverpool—and prevent it from suffering immediate relegation in 2022–23 remains to be seen.

The home side doubled their advantage just after the half-hour mark when Kebano’s ball into the box took a fortunate deflection into the path of Carvalho and he fired a first-time shot into the back of the net. Mitrovic came agonisingly close to his hat-trick less than five minutes into the second half when he pounced on a loose ball and ran through on goal, only for Iversen’s outstretched leg to divert the ball onto the crossbar. PNE came close a couple of times before time was up, with Ben Whiteman coming closest by seeing a free-kick land narrowly over, but it was the hosts who took the points to confirm their passage to the Premier League. At the other end, Iversen denied Mitrovic his hat-trick, firstly saving one-on-one against the Serbian before a few minutes later needing to keep out his 12-yard effort with an outstretched hand. The hosts had a third before the half was over, as Harry Wilson found Mitrovic who finished clinically to score his 40th of the Championship season.

Fulham cruise to promotion but must sharpen up for Premier League ... (The Guardian)

Marco Silva's entertainers have dominated the Championship but thoughts will quickly turn to ending yo-yo status.

The Shakhtar Donetsk winger Manor Solomon, a name once on the lips of Pep Guardiola, is admired and a goalkeeper to rival Marek Rodak and Paulo Gazzaniga has been mooted. But like with Olise, the Football Association faces a challenge getting Carvalho, who was born in Lisbon but grew up in south London and has represented England at Under-18 level, in its grasp. In the end, it was Nottingham Forest’s late push for the top two that delayed the inevitable. Harry Wilson, a £12m signing from Liverpool, has been revitalised after loan spells and shone as part of Mitrovic’s supporting cast, alongside Fabio Carvalho and Neeskens Kebano, who is arguably enjoying his best form six years on from signing. Carvalho has been this season’s Michael Olise, a breakout young player with a wonderful sense of gravity, and the midfielder equally appears ready to take the step up in his stride. The brutal reality is that Marco Silva’s attention will soon turn, if it has not already, towards becoming at least the 17th best team in the country.

Fulham are back up, and now the attempt to defy gravity begins again (The Independent)

Fulham have secured promotion back to the Premier League in style - now can they stay up? (Getty Images). Promoted, relegated, promoted ...

At least, after being play-off winners in 2018 and 2020 and looking unprepared for the start of the season two years ago, Fulham have longer to plan. But, as the Premier League and the Championship feel ever further apart, Fulham again must aim to defy the laws of footballing gravity: that what went up must come down. But that led to a 13-year stay in the top flight. There is a case for arguing the Championship’s manager of the season is Huddersfield’s Carlos Corberan, Luton’s Nathan Jones, Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cooper or even Derby’s Wayne Rooney, who have had to do more with less. Norwich’s model has felt more organic, with greater continuity in the dugout and fewer expensive additions – certainly compared to Fulham’s masterclass in bad buying in 2018-19, when they spent £100 million to go down – but they can look two of a kind. A return of 10 goals and 15 assists suggests he was a Championship cheat code; as Mitrovic, on 40 goals, is closing in on Guy Whittingham’s divisional record, he is a still greater one.

“There are hundreds of business projects with Spanish companies in Saudi Arabia. Why only the football can’t?” When you achieve something so important early in the season, that gives you time to prepare in the right way and we have to do that.” Tommy T reckons Manchester United, Arsenal and Spurs should have done better in the race for Big Cup qualification given they have all experienced early cup exits. “At Anfield we were treated to a display of sheer professionalism at the highest level. “Our physios made 71 treatments between Atlético Madrid and the semi-final against Liverpool,” he tooted. In Mitrovic, Fulham have a striker who has scored 40 Championship goals this season, a fine achievement that has prompted some armchair critics to flag up the derisory three the Serbian international scored in the top flight last season and label him a flat-track-bully. “I don’t know what’s going on in their heads or if they’re even following women’s football.” “WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE!” chanted Fulham’s ecstatic players and fans at Craven Cottage, a refrain they previously sung in 2018 and 2020, only to sink like Boris Johnson’s approval rating upon reaching the promised land. This guy was focused on the job” – Mark McFadden.
