Fulham and the Premier League: back once again (The Guardian)

“There are hundreds of business projects with Spanish companies in Saudi Arabia. Why only the football can’t?” When you achieve something so important early in the season, that gives you time to prepare in the right way and we have to do that.” Tommy T reckons Manchester United, Arsenal and Spurs should have done better in the race for Big Cup qualification given they have all experienced early cup exits. “At Anfield we were treated to a display of sheer professionalism at the highest level. “Our physios made 71 treatments between Atlético Madrid and the semi-final against Liverpool,” he tooted. In Mitrovic, Fulham have a striker who has scored 40 Championship goals this season, a fine achievement that has prompted some armchair critics to flag up the derisory three the Serbian international scored in the top flight last season and label him a flat-track-bully. “I don’t know what’s going on in their heads or if they’re even following women’s football.” “WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE!” chanted Fulham’s ecstatic players and fans at Craven Cottage, a refrain they previously sung in 2018 and 2020, only to sink like Boris Johnson’s approval rating upon reaching the promised land. This guy was focused on the job” – Mark McFadden. It would be lazy and unoriginal to state that Fulham’s win over Preston on Tuesday guaranteed their relegation from next season’s Premier League, so needless to say that is exactly what The Fiver will do. Chelsea v Arsenal: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Thomas Tuchel's side are back in form as the Gunners come to town. Join Rob Smyth for updates.

Chelsea are going to finish third, barring a tale of the seriously unexpected, whereas Arsenal are involved in an increasingly messy struggle for fourth place. Injuries, outgoing loans and the inherent irreplaceability of Thomas Partey have left Arsenal short in recent weeks, and few people fancy them to get anything tonight. There will be a reduced crowd at Stamford Bridge the night. Christensen played a poor backpass, well short of Mendy, and Nketiah was onto it in a flash. He cut inside and hit a pretty tame shot that took a deflection off Xhaka, who turned away from the ball, and spun past Ramsdale. I’m pretty sure Werner’s shot was going wide, in which case it will go down as a Xhaka own goal. Another way, perhaps, in which that Wenger-era Arsenal seems to span the birth of Football Today.” Loftus-Cheek won the ball 30 yards from goal and gave it to Werner on the left. It was an excellent break, starting with an indecently cool nutmeg on Alonso by Xhaka. Eventually Odegaard played a short pass to Smith Rowe, who ran onto the ball in the D and shaped a sweet first-time shot into the far corner. Nketiah turns Sarr smartly, 22 yards out, and cracks a left-footed shot just wide of the near post. It was a pretty poor challenge from Mount, actually, and he’s fortunate not to be booked. 25 min Saka’s deflected shot is headed across goal by Nketiah and volleyed off target by the stretching Tavares. No matter: Tavares was offside. That was crying out for Mick Harford, arriving late to put the ball and four Chelsea defenders into the net.

Chelsea vs Arsenal LIVE: Premier League latest score and goal ... (The Independent)

Edouard Mendy is given the ball with Arsenal pressing up the pitch. Arsenal will arguably be the happier side as they’ve been lacking goals recently but have looked sharp in front of goal. The first half swung beautifully back and forth as Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring before Timo Werner equalised a few minutes later. Kick off: Thiago Silva has come on for Chelsea replacing Andreas Christensen in the back line. The striker halts his run though as he looks offside and Aaron Ramsdale comes out to tidy up for Arsenal. He curls a low pass into the box for Lukaku to run onto but the forward is blocked off by Xhaka who holds him up long enough for Ramsdale to scoop up the loose ball.

Chelsea vs Arsenal: Romelu Lukaku handed first Premier League ... (Daily Mail)

Romelu Lukaku has been brought back into Chelsea's starting XI for their Premier League showdown with Arsenal on Wednesday night.

He's getting chances, it's just a matter of time for me that he's going to score. The first goal of Lukaku's second spell at Chelsea came away at the Gunners back in August, and when asked if that played a part in his thinking on Wednesday Tuchel admitted: 'A little bit. 'It was not the main reason - he deserves to play first of all and Kai is a bit tired. 'Lukaku has six weeks to save his Chelsea career. As a manager you never give up on your players especially when they come for that kind of price tag. Kai Havertz is overloaded so it was the moment to go with Romelu.'

Manchester City battle past Brighton & Hove Albion to reclaim ... (Eurosport.co.uk)

Man City beat a resolute Brighton side 3-0 to move back to the top of the Premier League table.

16’ – BIG CHANCE: Sanchez tries to play out from the back and Mahrez intercepts it and has time on the ball in front of goal but he doesn't pass or shoot. The goal he created was crucial in giving his team control of the match and stopping panic setting in. The eyes of the world were on Guardiola's men and Liverpool fans became Brighton supporters for the evening. A big slice of luck. However, once City got one goal the result was never in doubt. City are one point ahead, could that be all it takes to seperate them.

"It is one of the happiest days as next season we will be in the Champions League," said Guardiola. "People take it for granted but we have to be in the Champions League. When it happens mathematically it's because we have done really well. City will need everyone -- particularly key players like De Bruyne and Dias -- if they are going to hold off Liverpool and safely negotiate these next six games while also trying to win the Champions League for the first time in their history. If we don't win all the games, Liverpool will be champions. They might need a bit more here on Saturday, particularly if Watford are as organised and resilient as Brighton. This time City get to put the pressure on Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp's side not in action until 24 hours later against Everton at Anfield. "It happened three years ago, we won 14 in a row to be champions. When Bernardo Silva scored the third on 82 minutes, the home supporters finally got up the courage to chant "champions, champions, champions."

Liverpool had hoped to get their kick off time against Newcastle United put back, but the request has been thrown out by the Premier League.

"The league and the broadcaster really have to try at least to help. You just have to react and deal with it. I can understand that people want to see a football match between Liverpool and Newcastle but I don’t see why any team should have an advantage or a disadvantage.

He has three to aim for in the middle, but his low cross is put out for a corner by Holding. The Arsenal defenders sit off Sarr so he swings an early cross into the box, but it's over everyone in the middle. It's nowhere near Saka, but Azpilicueta unnecessarily pushes him to ground and the referee points straight to the spot. Arsenal's high press is still causing Chelsea some real problems here and the hosts can't get out of their own half.

20 years after Megson's first promotion to the Premier League, how ... (The Athletic)

It was 20 years ago today that Gary Megson and his legendary group of players dragged West Bromwich Albion into a new chapter in their history.

Complacency would be foolish but a return to the dark days of the late ’80s and ’90s remains some way away. The revenue generated by the improved fortunes that began under Megson have been ploughed into bricks and mortar. Leadership and resolve are absent among the players. It is fair to say many of the successful structures that were built on the platform Megson laid have been dismantled in recent years, contributing to the mess in which Albion find themselves. That team and their achievement changed the landscape of life at The Hawthorns and laid the foundations for the success that followed, transforming Albion from a middle-of-the-road second-tier club into a side expected to compete for a place among the nation’s elite. That is a position they have not been in since Megson dragged the club up by its bootstraps and pipped Wolves to automatic promotion in the most famous season in their post-war history.
