The F1 Sprint races are about to return for the 2022 season after a dramatic hat-trick of events in 2021 when the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen ...
Austria and Sao Paulo will also provide the settings for Sprint races during the 2022 season. That makes the Sprint more likely to prove pivotal in deciding where drivers finish this season. Hamilton won the full British Grand Prix race, where Verstappen did not finish after a hugely controversial collision with the home hero. What does the Sprint race entail? Pit stops are not mandatory, meaning the race lives up to its name by giving drivers the chance to go flat-out for victory from the start. How is it likely to affect the standings, and what time and where can F1 fans watch it?

World champion won the right to lead Saturday's 21-lap dash to decide P1, while Lewis Hamilton criticised his mishandling Mercedes after only managing 13th.
Leclerc set the pace on his opening hot lap in Q3, mighty through the second and third sectors but he was only two-hundredths clear of Verstappen with a time of 1min 28.778sec. Pole gives Verstappen the chance to claw back points in the title fight which Leclerc leads on 71, with the world champion, who has retired twice this season, in sixth on 25. The drivers kept lapping as the clock ticked down and Verstappen pipped his rival with a 1min 27.999sec lap just before another red flag as Valtteri Bottas ground to a halt on track. It really punishes you if you make a mistake you can go in the wall. By its close Red Bull’s Max Verstappen had earned “pole position” but such is the equally painful structuring of this format, while his pole counts statistically in the record books it is only for Saturday’s sprint race which will decide the literal pole for Sunday’s GP. Hamilton only narrowly made it into Q2 and finished in 13th place with his teammate George Russell in 11th.
After three entertaining and incident-packed Sprint weekends last year, the format returns at Imola for the Emilia Romagna GP. But what are the benefits of ...
The Sprint had its critics before debuting in 2021 in Silverstone, Monza and Interlagos - but nobody can dispute that the new format provided entertainment to the weekends. While not responsible for controversy directly, the Sprint also had its part to play in hugely dramatic moments last year. Again at Monza, the pair collided a day after the Sprint. Plus, if a driver wins all three Sprints in 2022, that almost adds up to a race win on its own (24). Handy. The winner will collect eight points, second place will score seven, with this continuing in descending order down to eighth (one point). It starts at 3.30pm and is live on Sky Sports F1 and Main Event, with build-up from 2.30pm.

For the entire 2022 F1 season, Channel 4 will broadcast highlights of every qualifying and race of each event. The starting order for the sprint race will be decided by a traditional qualifying session held on Friday afternoon. Live streaming through NOW is also available in the UK. F1 has long been looking to make changes to the traditional race weekend format and while other options like reverse grid races were considered, they were ultimately unfancied compared to sprint races. In F2 the sprint race is 120km and the feature race covers 170km, though are usually no less exciting. They’re used in many other series, though perhaps most notably for Formula 1 is their inclusion in the Formula 2 race weekend.

The car surprised me in that corner, [and] I missed it. Sainz said the target at Imola was now “to move forward and try and rescue some good points” over the sprint race and grand prix. The drivers talk to the media ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.
I know a lot of people from here and I guess like in karting a lot of the racing is around Italy. In this way you spend a lot of time growing up is here so yeah, I don't know if I will class it as a home away from home but I have a lot of fans here, a lot of supporters who are here in Italy, and so on so it's nice to come back and nice to see a lot of the fans back already, even in these terrible conditions. And when I was younger I was trying I was trying to be the best player I could be and actually play for a team. And I mean, Miami is going to be an experience for all of us, for the racing community, for those that are the fans out there that are watching, the fans that are going to be flying in that maybe have never been there before. And I hope I can be as successful in my sport as he's actually now and I can invest in something I like in the future. But I think what made it tricky in the last couple years was the last two corners, you know, following closely was difficult, I think we discussed it and it should be quite a lot easier and you should exit the corner quite a lot closer than before. It's been a difficult start to the season for you and the team. A few of us got to do it in testing in Barcelona, I think that was all, so yeah, probably a bit a bit unknown at the moment. And yeah, I think an overtake should always be an effort and not dictated by you being in the zone and you get the DRS. The race in Jeddah, where you had the leaders braking for the DRS line to try and be the second one to cross that line, that's a different type of racing. But I think from P1, we have to be in a rhythm reasonably quick or quicker than the last few races, so then that can pass in a good window for qualifying. I'm good friends with a lot of people that are that I raced against in the lower categories, and I have obviously three to five guys that I think they would have done a very good job in Formula 1 but they couldn't make it. I mean, with Carlos, other than being a great guy, he's also a great driver and I think one of the most important things is that we feedback the team with the same things, we want the same things from the car. And it's also an advantage, I think, for both drivers to have a long-term vision in the team, and that we can work long term.

Repeating the feat in race trim will be tricky, but confidence is growing inside the team – and there is still one hour of practice to work on long runs. There’s also second practice on Saturday morning, where the conditions are expected to be the warmest and driest they’ve been all weekend, with that good weather set to continue for the rest of the weekend. That ultimately left him P10 and his team with a lot of work to do overnight to rebuild his F1-75. He was confident when we spoke in the morning that Red Bull were on top of their reliability issues and hopeful they could be in the fight this weekend. Since Liberty Media bought the sport in 2017, attendance has jumped, and cities are clamoring for races. Las Vegas just got its wish.
Whether in the future there’ll be a rotation of races, I think that’s a really great idea.” It will also allow the European audience to watch the race Sunday morning. “For the home fans, it’s very special to them. That could be the French Grand Prix because its contract expires after its next race in July. There have been discussions with Formula 1 over an extension. “There’s a desire to do another Asian race potentially,” Maffei said. “The first meetings with the officials in Las Vegas were a little bit cautious,” Domenicali said. “It’s important for the sport to go there. “It doesn’t get any better. “It is incredible to see the space Formula 1 is in at the moment and the excitement around the sport,” George Russell, the Mercedes driver, said. A new deal is close to being completed. Hamilton may not have to wait too long. “What we are doing is pushing the system for a different approach, to force the promoters to think big because the level of the events we are building is getting bigger.”

Verstappen won six other races in 2021, and only one of them was actually run in 2020. Be sure not to miss it, and don’t miss today’s knockout qualifying session (10:55 a.m. ET, ESPN2) or tomorrow’s sprint race (10:25 a.m. ET, ESPN) either. So it wouldn’t be completely accurate to put this track in the same category as Imola here. The Belgian Grand Prix, for all intents and purposes, wasn’t actually run. But Verstappen won in 2021 simply by qualifying on pole. Imola, officially known as Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, appeared annually on the Formula 1 calendar from 1980 to 2006.

Roman Stanek was a beneficiary of the late drama to move into fourth place, ahead of Hadjar, who was able to keep going through the gravel after his collision with Collet. The Alpine-backed youngster was involved in a collision with fast-charging Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar on the approach to the first chicane and was pitched into the gravel. Collet, who led for much of the race after passing pole man Colapinto on the fourth lap, left empty-handed after he was involved in a clash mere seconds after losing top spot.
