Millwall's battle to get into the Championship play-offs continues this afternoon when they make the trip to the Midlands to face Birmingham City in one of ...
If Rowett wanted a more solid midfield then perhaps Tyler Burey could drop out of the attacking midfield role and Saville could push further forward in Jed Wallace’s absence, but with how fragile Birmingham have been in defence lately it’s perhaps not the right match to withdraw an attacking presence like Burey for a central midfielder. Kieftenbeld though is an ex-Birmingham player so he would be very much up for this particular fixture should he come back in for Saville – but there’s always the chance that they could feature in the same team. There’s no-one else to really play that role for Rowett, but he could spring a major curveball and change the formation, which would mean Wallace playing as a left-back in a back four and an attack-minded player comes in for Malone instead.
Birmingham City were denied a deserved victory by an injury time penalty from Millwall's Benik Afobe. Blues had turned in a performance that was night and ...
He chased a lost cause and created the goal for Bacuna. Brought a real spark to Blues' attack. Brought a drive back to the midfield. A good effort from the skipper. One loose pass into midfield caused problems but overall this was a good return to the team. Decisive in set piece situations, made such a difference and almost stopped Burke's drive for the equaliser. Bacuna had a couple of left-footed attempts which flew just past the post and came even closer to breaking the deadlock just before the break. Millwall’s only real chance of the opening 45 came in the 34th minute when Murray Wallace shot through a crowd of defenders and Etheridge pushed it away from goal. Blues deservedly went ahead two minutes after the restart when Bacuna played a ball into the visitors' box. That prompted a response from Gary Rowett's men and they had several chances to equalise. At that point it looked as though the Londoners would go on to win the game. Former Wolves man Afobe stepped up and gave his side a point that could be vital in their chase for the top six. The first occasion was after just two minutes when Onel Hernandez, deployed further forward, won a free kick 25 yards from goal.
Juninho Bacuna had put the Blues ahead early in the second half, but Oliver Burke levelled. Lyle Taylor scored from the penalty spot with 11 minutes to go as it ...
Blackburn Rovers are nine points back, with three games to go as they visit Preston on Monday where a draw would see them unable to overhaul Nathan Jones’ side. The results sees Boro stay eighth, as they are now eight points away from Luton, with three games left, while they host Cardiff City on Wednesday. Lyle Taylor scored from the penalty spot with 11 minutes to go as it looked like the Lions would be beaten, before Afobe did the same with virtually the last kick.
Skipper Shaun Hutchinson returned for the injured Scott Malone, with Jake Cooper moving to the left side of the back three and Murray Wallace pushing up to left ...
But it’s now an outside chance for the top six. Rowett sent on Burey for Bradshaw in the 80th minute and Ryan Leonard for McNamara three minutes from time. But as the Lions were pushing for the winner they needed it was Birmingham who went in front again when Taylor beat Bialkowski from the penalty spot with 11 minutes left. Saville was off-target from Bradshaw’s cross and in desperate need of a goal Rowett sent on Mason Bennett for Hutchinson in the 63rd minute and switched to four at the back. And just when it appeared a lost cause for the visitors, Afobe kept his nerve from 12 yards with virtually the last kick of the game to score his 12th goal of the season and earn the Lions a point. That concession was compounded when Sheffield United went ahead against Cardiff City in the exact same minute of the game to go four points clear of Millwall in the live table.
Benik Afobe scores a late equaliser to help Millwall hold Birmingham City 2-2 in the Championship on Saturday.
Both teams have played 44 matches in the ongoing campaign, and only two matchdays remain before the Championship season concludes. It seemed the job was done by the hosts, but in the eighth minute of added time, Afobe converted from the penalty as well to ensure every team got a point. A defensive mishap allowed Juninho Bacuna to find the back of the net in the 47th minute.

I think we deserved to win the game but the officials took that away from us and I feel for the players because to turn it around from last week to this week and the criticism they would have taken from everybody. I believed we deserved to win the game, but yet again, another decision from the officials has cost us more points. We competed, we won a lot of individual battles and we had to stand up and be counted all over the pitch, man to man, against a very good Millwall side. Afobe remained composed and slotted past Etheridge to rescue a point. Mason Bennett's looping cross to the back post was headed across goal by Danny McNamara and the unmarked Burke side-footed home. The winger fended off challenges from two Millwall defenders before playing Bacuna through down the right channel.
Gary Rowett hailed the impact of Mason Bennett after he returned from injury to come off the bench in Millwall's 2-2 draw at Birmingham City.
