Oldham stand on the brink of one of the biggest falls of all (Football365.com)

Thirty years after being a founder member of the Premier League, Oldham Athletic are set to be the first of them to be relegated from the EFL.

If or when it comes, Oldham Athletic’s relegation from the EFL should be a reminder that while the path to that Premier League can be paved with gold, the journey back can be extremely bumpy indeed. Bolton Wanderers fell from the Premier League to League Two and came close to closing altogether. At Wembley, again playing Manchester United, Oldham took the champions to extra-time and even took the lead a minute into the second period. Oldham stayed in the top flight for three seasons but it was touch and go. On the last day of the following season, in dramatic scenes at Boundary Park, they came from two down to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 and earn promotion, with the winning penalty from Neil Redfearn prompting one of the more spectacular pitch invasions of the era. Oldham struggled near the bottom of the First Division until they were relegated in 1923, and a further drop into Division Three North followed in 1935. In the FA Cup, they beat Birmingham, Brighton, Everton and Aston Villa, before losing after a replay to Manchester United in the semi-finals. During the 1989/90 season, Oldham beat Leeds, Scarborough, Arsenal, Southampton and West Ham (the latter by virtue of an astonishing 6-0 win in the first leg of a two-legged semi-final) in the League Cup, before losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest in the final; it was a first trip to Wembley their 95-year history. When the Third Division was de-regionalised in 1958 and a new Fourth Division was created, Oldham were placed there. One win from their last two matches of the season against Burnley and Liverpool would have made them the champions of England for the first time. Coming as this does at the end of a season of boycott and rancour, the situation could barely be bleaker for a club that has slipped through the divisions over the last three decades with barely anyone noticing. It’s a desperate situation at the bottom of League Two for Oldham Athletic. With Scunthorpe United already relegated, they have three games left to play and are four points adrift of third-bottom Stevenage.

“The decision was taken in order to maintain the integrity of the competition given the importance of the fixture at both ends of the League Two table.” However, with the outcome of the game having significance at both the top and bottom of League Two, time running out in the season to replay the fixture, and the scoreline finely poised at 2-1, a decision was taken to complete the match behind closed doors. “The remaining 14 minutes played resulted in a final scoreline of Oldham Athletic 1 Salford City 2 and as a result Oldham Athletic have been relegated from League Two.

Oldham have been relegated from League Two after a badly interrupted 2-1 home defeat by Salford ended their 115-year stay in the Football League.

However, in 2018 the club dropped to League Two and four years on their decline means they will play in the National League from next season. Three years later, in 1997, the late-season appointment of Neil Warnock failed to yield the results they needed to stave off another relegation. The match was then initially abandoned before the final 12 minutes were played out behind closed doors, eventually resulting in the Latics’ fourth straight defeat.

'Get out of our club': The day Oldham Athletic fell from the cliff edge (The Athletic)

Relegated from the EFL after a match that had to finish behind closed doors, Oldham fans blame their owner for their swift descent.

“Despite the earlier announcement of the abandonment of the fixture, after discussions with both clubs, match officials, and stadium security it was agreed the match could be concluded today,” it read. Two dozen police officers arrived in support of overrun stewards before an announcement went out just after 5pm, 20 minutes or so after play was halted, to inform fans the game had been abandoned. There is deep scepticism among fans on Lemsagam’s ambitions to sell a club he bought for £1 in January 2018. There were gilt-edged chances, too, for Oldham to take the lead. “We are of one mind that there is no future for our club under this regime and they must go,” said a statement released by fans group Push the Boundary on Saturday morning. He released a five-year plan when he first arrived, saying he wanted to get to the Championship. Now we’re facing relegation to National League. I’ve never felt so disconnected to my club.” The English Football League (EFL) later said the decision had been made to “maintain the integrity of the competition”. Oldham, after all, are a club where fans have been mobilising against Lemsagam for much of the season. Not even an unofficial truce, called in support of Sheridan, could last the season. Oldham were given that desperate opportunity with shadows lengthening across the pitch that had taken over an hour to clear but could not take it. The private intention, however, had always been to finish what had been started. A handshake and consolations were exchanged between Oldham manager John Sheridan and his Salford City counterpart Gary Bowyer, while a handful of players lay crestfallen on the Boundary Park pitch.
