Emilia Romagna Grand Prix result: Verstappen dominates at Imola ... (Sporting News)

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen looks to cut the points deficit to championship leader Charles Leclerc in Italy, with The Sporting News providing ...

He will hope to have an easier time of it today and retain the lead from pole at the start, but he knows at least he is a match for his title rival at Imola. 75 mins to lights out: Just as on Friday it its wet at Imola. There has been a lot of rain around in the last hour or so and conditions are treacherous to say the least. Charles Leclerc came to Imola having won two of the first three races of the season and the championship leader will hope he can bring further joy to his Italian employers today. The seven-time world champion has had a miserable 2022 so far and it hasn't got any better at Imola where he was only 14th in the Sprint on Saturday. 20 mins to lights out: This is an exciting era of F1 racing with three great races to start the 2022 season. Being on the right compound for the conditions at the correct time will be critical and could well define the outcome of the afternoon's proceedings. 10 mins to lights out: It has dried out quite quickly, at least on the starting grid, ahead of the race start. "Too risky" he says when the conversation on the pit radio comes up on whether to go on slicks yet. Red Bull have control of the race with Verstappen ahead of Perez. Leclerc immediately trying to pressurise Norris to get up to third and try and chase the front two. Lap 32: We are past halfway and Verstappen is 10 seconds ahead of Red Bull teammate Perez. Leclerc right behind the Mexican, with Norris fourth in his McLaren a further 14 seconds off the pace. Time and again the Mercedes gets right under the wing of the AlphaTauri into Turn 1, but with Gasly getting DRS from the Williams of Albon ahead he does not have the grunt to get through. Charles Leclerc had been on course for third but the championship leader spun off late in proceedings as he chased Perez for second.

Verstappen dominated in the wet-dry race here at Imola to claim his second win of the season, with Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez second and Lando Norris ...

It's really tricky conditions and you need to feel the grip on the track and you need to stay on the track. Forecast shows that it could - and is perhaps likely to - stop raining before the race starts. that will be yellow flags and the end of his race. Six of one and half a dozen with the first-lap incident? Hamilton on the back of Stroll in the fight for 10th but he's been behind him a few laps now. I mean, that gives Verstappen enough of a gap to try the same. He was far too aggressive at the chicane at the top of the track. Out come Red Bull for Sergio Perez to try and do the same to cover the fastest lap point. He currently has the fastest lap point, taking it off Verstappen. Think Verstappen will hold most of his battery charge for the final couple of laps though. Verstappen does, of course, have the fastest lap point. He had a car that was set up for the wet and not the dry. A fast-starting Russell moved up three spots to eighth and then took advantage of the Sainz-Ricciardo accident to take sixth.

F1 LIVE: Emilia Romagna Grand Prix result and standings as Max ... (The Independent)

Follow all the reaction from Imola as Red Bull celebrate a one-two on after a nightmare race for Ferrari.

Today, you never know with the weather how competitive you are going to be but as a team we did everything well. “I had a little bit of an exchange with him and said ‘sorry for the car today. But there are always tough moments in the life of a sportsman and it is my turn to go through them.” The team deserve it, from where we were in race one to a podium, it’s amazing. We just need to fix the car. Charles Leclerc rubs his head in frustration as he watches the podium finishers be interviewed. We got squeeze by the Alpine and then there is just no overtaking when you are in a DRS train. Really happy with this P4 but if we want to maintain this place in the championship we need to find more pace.” We are not good enough for the world champion. Lando Norris completed the podium and George Russell finished fourth with a commendable drive in the struggling Mercedes. We did not have the pace. “There are stats that sound nice on paper but are pretty meaningless,” says George Russell when told he is the only driver to finish in the top five.

Imola Grand Prix: Verstappen dominates as Ferrari implode (Grand Prix 247)

2022 Emilia Romagna Imola F1 Grand Prix race report results photos. Red Bull's Max Verstappen wins as Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc spins.

Perez did all that could have been asked of him by Red Bull and Verstappen for that matter: “It was really intense, the fight [with Leclerc]. I think the most important thing was not making mistakes, in these conditions, it was so tricky. He was 13th in the dastardly W13… This defeat to Red Bull will hurt deeply at Maranello for a long time and could well be the tipping point for Verstappen in this title race. Sainz slid backwards into the kitty litter where he remained beached for a very short Sunday at the office for him. The track was drying far more rapidly than expected. Everything was well managed,” added the Dutch ace.

Verstappen storms to win at Emilia Romagna Grand Prix: F1 – live ... (The Guardian)

Lap-by-lap updates as Max Verstappen starts on pole at Imola, with Daniel Harris providing the latest.

Lap 42/63 Watching Hamilton like this is something. Lap 55/63 Norris will be absolutely delighted, while Leclerc will be fuming with himself. And as I type that, Bottas has a dig going into Tamburello; Russell holds him off. But as a leader you’ve got to dictate the pace, and everything was well-managed. He didn’t think the car would go as well as it did, praising the hard work of his team - and himself – and says he likes these conditions. 6 Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) Leclerc’s lead remains a healthy one, but Red Bull and Verstappen are on the charge. 4 George Russell (Mercedes) 3 Lando Norris (McLaren) He’s pretty sanguine in interview, though, saying it happens in the life of a sportsman and is happy the good times will soon come. 1 Max Verstappen (Red Bull) He can see Red Bull are more competitive than they were and expects it to be close for the rest of the season, which is why his mistake was so significant - though he’s actually relieved the penalty for it wasn’t even worse.

“I struggled with the tyres, with graining on the front left so we have to work to come back stronger tomorrow. This collision prompted a Safety Car intervention while the debris was cleared. The support here for Ferrari is amazing.” “I had to stay calm. That’s all we can hope for,” admitted Hamilton. The seven-time champion was unable to make any progress through the field as he and Russell struggled for pace and performance in the shorter race won by world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull.
