“Every media interview at the moment focuses on what might be and that’s fine because that’s our world. What I’ve really loved about how we’ve collectively enjoyed moments in recent weeks is that it reflects our mindset of being in the ‘now’ at all times.” Ben Godfrey pulled up injured in the warm-up, with Michael Keane coming into the starting lineup. “We want to move the ball and have possession… “There won’t be time on the ball, we have to be brave, accept it and play. As for Everton, it’s all about survival.

Liverpool vs Everton LIVE: Premier League latest score and goals ... (The Independent)

All the action and updates from Anfield in a crucial Merseyside derby for both teams.

Injured from heading the ball. Doucoure ends up hacking down Fabinho as the Liverpool team all sprint over to confront him for a nasty challenge. Sadio Mane and Mo Salah have had half chances but on the whole it has been a very impressive performance from the visitors. It really cannot be overstated the level of gamesmanship at play from Everton in that first half. Everton, meanwhile, have won just one of their last four and despite securing a last-gasp point against Leicester in midweek, they’re now on the verge of the drop zone and facing a very tough end to the season with Chelsea and Leicester next up, making this derby meeting even more important than usual. The Reds are still in the running for an unprecedented quadruple this season, but have no margin for error in the championship race after Man City hammered Watford on Saturday to move four points clear having played a game more.

Robertson and Origi sink Everton to keep Liverpool on title trail (The Guardian)

Goals from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi gave Liverpool a 2-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby and maintain their title pursuit.

Victory was secured in the final minutes with Liverpool substitutes again to the fore. Everton remained dangerous on the counter, almost exclusively via Gordon, who was cleaned out on one run by Alexander-Arnold and had a strong penalty appeal denied with the game goalless when going down under a shove from Joël Matip. But there was more intensity and urgency to Liverpool in the second half with Mohamed Salah increasingly prominent. That sparked the first of two scuffles in the opening period and, in truth, the needle was more entertaining than the game at that point. Origi ghosted in behind two Everton defenders to beat Pickford with a close-range header. Gordon raced away from Trent Alexander-Arnold on to an Abdoulaye Doucouré pass and went down just outside the area after a push in the back from the full-back. If that wasn’t enough, Ben Godfrey suffered a quadricep injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Michael Keane. Lampard had rested Yerry Mina after his return from a two-month layoff against Leicester on Wednesday, leaving Everton a man down on a bench that included the 18-year-old midfielder Isaac Price.

Liverpool 2-0 Everton: Second half goals from Andy Robertson and ... (Eurosport.co.uk)

Liverpool moved back to within a point of Premier League leaders Manchester City following a hard-fought 2-0 win in a fiery Merseyside derby.

Robertson ghosts in at the far post to nod beyond Pickford after Salah had combined well with Origi. 54’ – EVERTON PENALTY APPEAL. Gordon drives into the left side of the Liverpool area and goes down as Matip moves an arm across him. As for Everton, Lampard may well point to a melee late in the first half where Sadio Mane was perhaps fortunate to pick up just a caution and a penalty shout after the interval. The Belgium international seems set to leave Anfield in the summer and has been used sparingly all season, but he has a habit of netting against the Blues and his record surely played a part in his manager’s thinking. The Scot also produced a vital clearance inside his own six-yard box to make key contributions at both ends. Liverpool needed to pull their sleeves up and brush aside plenty of frustration before finally overcoming a dogged Everton.

Keane had a nervy moment in the second half when his challenge on Origi brought a penalty appeal, though the claims fell on deaf ears. Perhaps some time out for Jota, ensuring he enters the field ready to prove a point, is the answer against Villarreal. The hosts opened up at the start of the second half, and this allowed Everton to find gaps in behind. Despite boasting the league's highest scorer in Salah, this isn't an issue for the Reds. Back in the 2018-19 season, Liverpool needed a late, late intervention from Divock Origi to break Everton's resistance. After Liverpool got past Benfica in the Champions League, with centre-back Ibrahima Konate among the goals, goalkeeper Alisson praised the variety of goal threat within the squad.

Five things seen in Liverpool vs Everton as Andy Robertson heroics ... (Liverpool.com)

Divock Origi was the hero as Liverpool scrapped to a victory against Everton that could have ramifications at both ends of the table.

He was unfortunate not to draw a free-kick — and possibly more — when Alexander-Arnold gave him a little shove as he looked set to run clear of the back line. Much as Origi's contributions will not be forgotten in a hurry, the goal itself was scored by the head of Robertson: literally and figuratively. As Jamie Carragher pointed out in commentary, it was a change he probably wouldn't even have made had it not been for Origi's storied history against Everton. But the weight of history should never be underestimated, and the Liverpool manager harnessed its full power. This is the kind of game for which Richarlison lives. If that wasn't enough, he then made sure of the result, getting on the score-sheet himself with a poacher's header after Luis Díaz went for the spectacular. His mere presence in the box seemed to spook Everton, who recognised their regular vanquisher — after his first involvement laid off Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson was heading in the opener seconds later.

Certainly Trent Alexander-Arnold was fortunate to complete the game. Jordan Henderson crossed, Diaz delivered a bicycle kick and Origi turned up to apply the finishing touch. So accustomed to creating goals, Liverpool’s left-back scored one and the celebrations showed its significance. Liverpool made a slower start, certainly compared to fantastic first halves against each Manchester club and Everton could take solace from their organisation and resolve, even if Richarlison was very much a lone striker, ahead of banks of four and five, when they had just 14 per cent of possession before the break. Robertson arrived in the six-yard box to head in and complete a move he started. They are running out of time but at least prevented greater damage to their goal difference.

Liverpool vs Everton: Player ratings, analysis and reaction as Divock ... (iNews)

Robertson got the ball rolling for Liverpool but it was Origi's late header that calmed the nerves in Anfield during a tense Merseyside derby.

At 27, the next move is a crucial one as it could define the rest of his career. He had been on the pitch only briefly, his first minutes for Liverpool since early March. He should have been rusty. Origi has now scored 11 goals as a substitute in the Premier League, the outright most by a Liverpool player. It did not come, and from that moment on, in these type of games, you felt there was only going to be one winner. As a result, knowing their position of inferiority against their rivals, Everton employed Simeone-inspired dark arts, staying down injured as long as possible, leaving their leg in on tackles for that fraction longer than they needed to. Origi has not even started a league game this season, playing 102 minutes in total off the bench, yet he has three goals.

And with so much to play for over the next five weeks, that cannot be compromised. By contrast, rival midfielder Allan attempted six passes in his 73 minutes on the pitch and completed just two – both from a kick-off. The striker may never rub shoulders with the true Liverpool greats but, in terms of moments, he is almost unsurpassed. Having long fallen down the forward pecking order, Origi has barely been seen this season, amassing a mere 101 minutes in the top flight. Excellent against both Manchester City and United last week, like so many of his team-mates the Scot is hitting peak condition at exactly the right time. For all the constant chatter of contracts around Liverpool, there’s one unique deal they should now consider.

PETER CROUCH: I've watched quite a lot of Villarreal this year and witnessed masterclasses by Unai Emery, a man derided in England, in knocking out Bayern ...

I had about an hour with Alan Shearer in the week for a podcast. That is not Villarreal. They keep an element of danger, breaking with blistering pace and with goal threats in Gerard Moreno and Arnaut Danjuma. You really need that. From my own experience in troublesome dressing rooms, I saw little groups of players whispering and blaming others. They defended like their lives depended on it but that victory was not just the result of a rearguard action. The people who really slated him probably cannot speak a word of another language and here Emery was dealing with rubbish. Pau Torres and Raul Albiol, formerly of Real Madrid, dealt with everything. What he was keen to mention were his three serious cruciate ligament injuries, which people forget. Here is a man making an effort in a foreign country. The knockout king Emery, a man derided in England. Emery stands ahead of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. We have to mention it. You either have it or you don't. Emery has it.

Liverpool vs Everton: Mark Clattenberg gives his verdict on ... (GiveMeSport)

Former referee Mark Clattenberg gives his verdict on the controversial decisions during Sunday's Premier League clash between Liverpool and Everton.

“Mane is a fool for even running the risk in a match that Liverpool had to win, but neither incident was violent. “It was during that skirmish that Sadio Mane was caught on camera pushing Allan in the face. “There wasn’t enough for a spot-kick and playing on was the correct call.” “Unfortunately, Everton’s Anthony Gordon is in danger of picking up a reputation for trying to con referees and that won’t help him in his career.” He wrote in his Sportsmail column. From Everton’s perspective, they were well aware that they were playing the form team in Europe and playing expansively would be a recipe for disaster. It was a feisty affair, even by Merseyside derby standards, with Liverpool hunting the league leaders and Everton fighting for their survival, neither team wanted to be on the wrong end of the result.
