Mark Selby has said enjoying snooker again is the big positive he will take into the summer following his exit from the World Championship.

Yan Bingtao at his best to lead reigning champion Mark Selby ... (Eurosport.co.uk)

Yan Bingtao leads Mark Selby 9-7 after edging ahead in Saturday's morning session in a fascinating match.

Match sharpness was a concern for Selby, given his lack of competitive snooker on account of the time he has missed while he battles with his mental health, and it showed in the fourth. Yan was playing fearlessly and his cue action was infallible, and he was almost out of sight at 44-0 up with a safety behind the yellow and brown. A half a century in no time looked like reducing the deficit and before long that became a marvellous clearance of 132 to reduce the deficit to just two frames. Selby sank a brilliant long red to give himself and register his first pot in 30 minutes, but a missed black off the spot all-but handed the frame and a three-frame lead to Yan. He took a 24-point lead before a bad angle on the black drew his break to a close, but Selby gave Yan another look with a poor safety. Yan grabbed frame-ball black leaving Selby needing a snooker, but the defending champion never had the chance to try as Yan cleaned up for his 12th Crucible century.

World Snooker Championship 2022 - Yan Bingtao produces battling ... (Eurosport.co.uk)

Yan Bingtao produced Mark Selby-type snooker to beat Mark Selby 13-10 and book his place in the quarter-finals of the World Championship.

It went on, and on, and on - and by the time the pair got down to the colours Selby's highest break of the frame was one. And the 2021 Masters champion showed he has break-building class to complement his steely safety with a winning break of 112. Once again, he prowled round the table and knocked it down the side rail to the bottom left to open up a four-frame lead. The 18th frame had a Selby feel to it, with it extremely scrappy and boiling down to a safety battle. An excellent safety from Yan forced an error from Selby and he freed his arm with a run of 37. The pain was exacerbated as Yan cleared to the pink to extend his lead.

Ronnie O'Sullivan earlier finished off Mark Allen to reach a record 20th Crucible quarter-final.

“It doesn’t mean anything to me,” insisted O’Sullivan. “They’re not the kinds of statistics that I’m proud of. Even when I steam-rollered everyone in 2012, it wasn’t easy. And a gruelling opening session between Judd Trump and Anthony McGill also ended all square, with each player scoring a century before McGill took the last of the day to keep the match in the balance. “If you look at Bruce Lee, he trained for many hours, not just mentally but physically. “It’s not easy – I really struggle with it, to be honest with you. It felt like my game was coming back a bit and I was enjoying it, so it’s positive going forward.”

Yan ended the title defence of reigning world champion Selby at the Crucible, but the match wasn't without its controversies.

No doubt a close eye will be kept on his behaviour when he faces three-time world champion Mark Williams in the quarter-finals. "The referee won't be hoodwinked there anyway because Rob Spencer is a brilliant referee. But as it turns out he could pot the brown.
