Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch hailed a hard-fought goalless draw at Crystal Palace as a “really big point” in the battle to avoid Premier League ...
“We just have to take the positives away. If you’d said to me five games ago that in the next five games you’d pick up 11 points, I’d have signed on the dotted line. “The result is big.
The Leeds-based media company behind productions on Leeds Rhinos and Leeds United have released a film about Glasgow Rangers. Ross Heppenstall reports.
“From a creative point, we take his words and use them in the film so, even though he’s not here, he’s still a really important voice in the story. Rangers supporters in their forties and fifties onwards have told me they are really glad that this film has been made so they can see important this team was. The trophy presentation was anything but conventional either. “A lot of the younger generation’s parents or grandparents might have been in Barcelona, so it’s nice to have these stories passed on and documented in a film.” “What I think we do well in the film is take Waddell to the screen through what the players said about him and we have also used his actual handwritten notes and tactics from the 1971-72 European campaign. Rangers72 paints a picture of life in Glasgow in the early 1970s and details how Waddell led the club’s response to the tragedy, laying the foundations for their European success.

The Toffees have been given a 54% probability of relegation, despite playing similar opponents to Leeds in their final run and having a game-in-hand. That same algorithm predicts that Everton will be the team that drops out of the Premier League. However, Burnley defeated Wolves at Turf Moor, giving them renewed confidence that they can beat the drop as they climbed out of the bottom three at Everton's expense.
The relegation battle has become very tight after an improved run of form by Burnley in the last ten days.
But there has been a change, not just in terms of results, but how they’ve gone about it. Given that the Whites are only three points away from that total, whilst Everton require eight more points to get there, Leeds are favourites, even with difficult fixtures remaining. "I think Everton will get to 35.
Leeds United ended their 16-day wait for a Premier League fixture last night with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
After this weekend’s home match with Chelsea, Everton will target the next four fixtures as their opportunity to escape from danger. With Leeds playing City, Everton hosting Chelsea and Burnley making the trip to Watford this weekend, the Clarets could see this as another huge opportunity to pull away from danger. Everton are now the side who find themselves in the bottom three as the Toffees continue to struggle away from Goodison Park.
Here are our four talking points from Leeds United's 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League as the Whites make it 11 points ...
Of course, this is not going to be an issue the club can rectify until the summer, but while Premier League status remains in balance, squad size has to be assessed as a reason for why Leeds are where they are. Very few spectators who have watched Leeds for long spells in recent matches will believe there are many, if any, points being added to that tally of 34 between now and May 15. The England international only gets better from here and he’s about to get very busy in the next three matches. There will be a time and place for debates around style and substance under Marsch, most likely in the autumn when next season starts to take shape, but points are all fans should be concerning themselves with currently. And yet, for any of the gripes with the entertainment or basic potency of what’s unfolding on the field, the league table is in a far better state than anyone could have hoped for. Imagine the dire state of affairs heading into the next three games without that fight and those clean sheets.
Leeds United's 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace did not feature a vintage Whites performance but it was a good day for at least two of Jesse Marsch's men.
At Selhurst Park he was wagging a finger at Wilfried Zaha after the winger eluded Raphinha's challenge with somewhat of a rugby hand-off. There are many differences between Marsch and his precedessor Marcelo Bielsa and one of the most noticeable is his proximity to the players. Having trotted off, with a grin and a wave for some away fans, he next appeared when Leeds emerged from the dressing room prior to kick-off and had a little dance to Palace's Selhurst Park pre-game playlist. He couldn't get into it and looked frustrated as he talked to Jesse Marsch on the touchline during a break in play. The winger is not only rapid, he's got a huge amount of flair and skill and at the age of 20 looks destined for big things. Leeds United spent a lot of money on both Robin Koch and Diego Llorente, while Pascal Struijk has been hailed as a big star for the future and a very decent option at centre-half for the present, but it's the man signed for £600,000 from newly-promoted League One Chesterfield in 2014 who is proving vital to the cause.
European champions Chelsea have proven they have what it takes to dethrone City, however, having done it in last season's Champions League final and will be ...
Zaha gets a second bite at it from a tighter angle, but the keeper stretches to kick that one away as well. Clyne fizzes a great throughball down the left for Olise, but a heavy touch takes it away from him before he can put in a cross. He has Schlupp ahead of him, but he knocks it straight out of play to big groans from the fans. The points are shared after a goalless draw between Crystal Palace and Leeds United. The hosts dominated the game, creating some great chances, but they just couldn't find a way through their opponents. His shot takes a deflection off Ayling, and it loops just wide of the far top corner. Leeds stay in 16th, and that point means they're now five points above Everton and the relegation zone.
Ayling with his millionth foul. The referee, who looks rather like The Wire's Jimmy McNulty, opts not to book him. 9:44PM. 87 mins: Crystal Palace 0 ...
Leeds lose it, Palace break, Ayling trips Zaha. A yellow for me, that. Toes it past the keeper but there's not quite enough on it and Leeds are able to hack it clear. Will we see a bit more quality in the second dig? A nice crossfield pass here, Raphinha picks it up in the inside right channel, cuts inside and tries to fire it left foot. Leeds are the first to show here. Booking for that, and then a booking for Ward as well for retaliating. It all made for a well-earned point for Leeds, even if they might have needed more. The arrival of Michael Olise helped in that regard and before long they were creating chances for Zaha — denied twice by Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier — and Conor Gallagher, who fired over from range. The scrappiness of the game did not suit Palace’s players, who created chances but never looked likely to show the ruthless edge that was required against a spirited Leeds backline. Such was the animosity that Vieira once accused Marsch of swaying the referees by “crying all week” in the build-up to the game. An ugly point, but a point nonetheless for a Leeds United team that remains a part of this relegation scrap whether they like it or not. The fixture list is not a source of encouragement for Leeds, who face Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea in their next three games.
Jesse Marsch has confirmed Leeds United's team at Crystal Palace in he Premier League on Monday night at Selhurst Park.
Illan Meslier has recovered from the knock at Wolverhampton Wanderers while Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas continue in the full-back positions. Diego Llorente retains his place alongside Liam Cooper after praise from Marsch for the clean sheet at Vicarage Road. One change was enough for Jesse Marsch in the Leeds United line-up which saw off Watford 3-0 more than two weeks ago with Kalvin Phillips restored.
Palace got the first sight of goal on five minutes as Mateta latched onto an excellent long ball over the top. He lifted the ball past Meslier, but Llorente ...
Palace built up their dominance as the game went on, with Gallagher in particular finding space to pepper the goal with a few shots to no avail. Leeds’ only real sight of goal in the first half came from two set-pieces, with Cooper and Rodrigo heading at goal with no success. Palace got the first sight of goal on five minutes as Mateta latched onto an excellent long ball over the top.
Leeds United shared the spoils against Crystal Palace as the two sides played out a goalless draw at Selhurst Park on Monday night (April 25).
With each passing game, the decision to start him as a nine seems only more baffling. The left foot of Harrison was more threatening than Raphinha’s today. Patrick Vieira set his team up to force Leeds to play it wide instead of dominating in the middle. He was imperious in the air and did not lose a single duel. He did not do enough to link up with the attacking players and defensively he surely could have done better. Made seven decent saves as well including two back to back ones in the dying stages.
Jesse Marsch has made one change to the Leeds United starting line-up tonight as we take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Michael Owen on the relegation battle, Marsch names squad to face Crystal Palace and Burnley making life tough at the bottom of the table - it's all here in ...
I think they’ve got the momentum, obviously recently they’re out of the bottom three now. Having found a new lease of life under caretaker manager Mike Jackson, Burnley look to be in the best form of the three. Honestly, on that performance today [2-0 loss to Liverpool], if I was an Everton fan, I’d be thinking we’ve got hope here, Leeds could get dragged into it.
1. GK: Illan Meslier. The young French stopper is the Whites' number one, and seemingly has a big future ahead of him. · 2. RB: Sergino Dest. The Barcelona right ...
With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at how Leeds could line up next season if some of the latest and most prominent pieces of transfer speculation came to fruition. But with so many rumours doing the rounds at Elland Road, it can be hard to keep track of who the Whites are actually in the running to sign. With six games left to play, Leeds United are probably still a little bit closer to the relegation zone than they would like to be at this advanced stage of the season.
Former Premier League striker Michael Owen believes Leeds are still in relegation trouble after recent results for Everton and Burnley.
And I'm then looking at Leeds' fixtures and thinking can they get four points out of that? The Clarets have played a game more than Leeds, while Everton trail the Whites by four points having also played 32 times this season. The Whites face Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal over the course of their next four games but are just four points clear of the bottom three as the campaign heads into the final straight.

Klich insists that no one at Elland Road wants to have a relegation on their CV and is pleased with the direction the club are heading in under Marsch, who came in when Marcelo Bielsa was sacked. The midfielder added that “everything’s going in a good direction” under Marsch. It could come tonight as they face a crunch meeting with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in a bid to continue their positive form under Marsch.
All of the marks out of 10 for Jesse Marsch's Leeds United side at Selhurst Park after their Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Monday night as the ...
Whatever it is, it's not getting the best out of him. Inevitably some rust for Phillips, but we didn't see the passing to trouble Palace we know he can deliver. Couldn't bring any degree of control to the middle of the pitch. Not quite as commanding as he was at Watford, but not too many feet put wrong by the captain. Yes, there were fouls, but under the pressure of a moaning home crowd, the right-back did pretty well with Zaha when you look at the one vs ones he was faced with. For all of the danger and territory Crystal Palace had, Meslier was not stretched hugely until the closing stages.
Leeds United are in action on Monday evening, away in the Premier League at Crystal Palace. Kick-off at Selhurst Park is at 8pm and you can follow all the ...
Next up for the Whites is a match with top of the table Manchester City, at Elland Road. A lively feel to the match continued. His low left-footed ball into the middle found Mateta in space, but the forward smashed it high over the bar. Little free-kicks were being awarded in all areas of the pitch which stopped any flow or rhythm that either team could attempt to get into. When the whistle went for the interval, no major chances had come at either end meaning each goalkeeper hadn’t really been tested either. Jack Harrison and Stuart Dallas had goal bound efforts well blocked, before Liam Cooper connected well with a Harrison corner only to see Vicente Guaita save his header.
Kalvin Phillips makes his first start since December, with Robin Koch making way. Leeds United fans have been reacting on social media:
Could’ve done with Summerville on the bench. To have KP back could be such a difference, but not a ton of attacking options on the bench. @H_Bottley: Strongest line up I’ve seen in a while.
Ian Poveda returned from an almost season-ending injury last night on loan for Blackburn Rovers and there was a jubilant reaction on social media. The 22-year- ...
Everton have been given a 54% probability of relegation, despite playing similar opponents to Leeds in their final run-in and having a game in hand. Everton are now the side who find themselves in the bottom three as the Toffees continue to struggle away from Goodison Park. Patrick Vieira was asked about the Leeds goalkeeper's performance after the game. Our tempo of passing was good today." The 22-year-old midfielder is currently on loan from Leeds United to Blackburn Rovers, but has not played a game since going off injured in November last year. Blackburn won the match 4-1 away, keeping them in contention for the play-offs.
Really, we just wanted to see something a bit hopeful at Selhurst Park on Monday night, but the point and clean sheet don't hurt.
It might be easy for Klich and the players to flick the switch from man-marking to zonal, to stop doing the old themes. The worry is, with only one point for that, about getting what most teams get from Manchester City on Saturday. It’s a question of optimisation and optimism, if one can come from the other. The question right now isn’t about which style is better, it’s about what could have been achieved more quickly: getting the players back to playing Bielsa’s style at its best, or getting the players up to playing Marsch’s style instead. But it’s looking much, much harder for them to get as good at doing the new style as they were at doing the old style. “But what’s difficult is to construct a new philosophy to substitute it and know that it resolves the next game.” “To not maintain your philosophy of play, and abandon the main themes that sustain it, that’s easy,” he said. It’s ideal for a team of players being developed to sell, and ideal for a team struggling to play well. The fewer wins you have, the more you need — and the more you’re expected to produce. “We have all played that,” he went on, talking about zonal marking, “even in the national team I don’t play man to man, I play zonal as well. The downside of optimising for the average, though, is that it blunts some of the players who could still be capable of more extraordinary things. But that’s the paradox of being at the bottom: the worse you’re doing, the better you have to play to improve. The idea right now doesn’t seem to be about getting the players playing ‘good’ football.
Phillips was making his first start in four months for Leeds, helping them to earn a point at Selhurst Park.
Jackson oversaw a second win in a row yesterday since he was handed the reins from Sean Dyche.
I don't like to mention players, but look at Jack Cork, he was unbelievable today, immense, and I could go through the rest of the lads. Burnley caretaker manager Mike Jackson has hailed the togetherness in his squad since taking charge earlier this month. “You're trying to achieve that (pulling in same direction), and it's really hard to do that, what we've got here is a group that have come together and have a great team spirit, and any manager or coach will tell you that is one of the hardest things to do, to create, because that can carry you a hell of a long way, rather than a group of individuals.”

It was the next day that Wilkinson really focused on, as he and the team got to celebrate with thousands of Leeds fans at the civic reception. Leeds United mark the 30th anniversary of the day they sealed the Division One title on Tuesday, April 26. "We were having Sunday dinner when our son Ben came downstairs from his bedroom, where he had been watching Liverpool-Man United, and said excitedly ‘Dad, we’ve just won the league!
Leeds United forward Dan James was slammed by Chris Sutton for a foul on Joel Ward that got both players booked at Crystal Palace Monday night (25 April).
What was the point of that? Ward was always getting there first.” The challenge resulted in James’ seventh booking in the league this year, identifying a real weakness in his game, and Sutton was outraged at the incident on the match commentary.
Leeds United took a point through a goalless draw upon their return to Premier League action at Crystal Palace - but how did we rate the performances?
Leeds United were crowned English football's First Division champions on 26 April 1992 as the Whites defeated Sheffield United 3-2 at Bramall Lane.
There have been core themes to the last 30 years of Leeds United's decorated history: financial disorganisation, administration and redemption. The club's second tier triumph in 2020 was the first opportunity an entire generation of Leeds supporters had to celebrate a truly consequential achievement. Gordon Strachan's quick-thinking at a short free-kick allowed Leeds to draw level before the break as Rod Wallace tore through.
Jamie Carragher and Robbie Keane discussed the differences between Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch's Leeds United on Monday Night Football.
He has them more organised and the players are probably enjoying it a little more." The thing you associated with Leeds was the training and we all loved it. We talk about Burnley making a brave decision, it’s the same with Leeds. It’s still mad and frantic but there has been some subtle changes.
BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce made an embarrassing slip of the tongue live during the Leeds United draw with Crystal Palace last night (25 April).
After Pearce had run down the upcoming fixtures on the BBC Radio 5 Live match broadcast (25 April, 08.25pm), co-commentator Chris Sutton asked: “Have you done a little points tally for teams at the bottom? You know I talk about manager’s success rates? success rate.
Leeds came under huge pressure from Crystal Palace, managed to pick up a point at Selhurst Park on Monday night.
“I know how difficult it is to limit their best players. “We just have to take the positives away. If you’d said to me five games ago that in the next five games you’d pick up 11 points, I’d have signed on the dotted line.

You have to find way to be good on the count, make it difficult on the opponent and to still have a little bit more creativity and ideas on how to connect to get to the final third, then create big chances. "It's because we're not spread out all over the pitch and allowing the opponent to win balls and attack us straight down the middle. We certainly have more work to do and there's some moments when we're man marking phases and trying to break out of that more and more. "In some moments we executed well against the ball well and in other moments we should have done better with the ball. More work to do with the ball and creating chances. If we can continue to do that, against good opponents, then we believe in our ability up the field to still find goals." JM: "We thought that we could win more balls in the middle of the field. JM: "No, I just felt like we needed more of a defensive presence in there and an ability to help press. To be fair, Illan [Meslier] was brave in a lot of moments and got our centre-backs into the game. "I know this season already, one of my teams has played against Man City and I know what a challenge that game is, I know how difficult it is to limit their best players from making good plays and their movement and ideas of what to do with the ball. "It was not so easy with 16 days to keep game fitness and game sharpness and that bit showed a little bit. Then a lot of times when we won the ball we gave it back in the first-half.
April 26 marks the 30th anniversary of Leeds' glorious championship triumph over Manchester United - but where are the club's heroes now?
Dramatically retired from football in 1997. Ended his career with Gillingham in 2004. Forced to retire through injury in 1994. During dinner, Liverpool beat Manchester United 2-0 to hand Leeds the title - and Wilkinson's Sunday dinner fast became a title celebration party before a civic reception the following day when Leeds' heroes were greeted by over 150,000 fans at the town hall.
