Benedict Cumberbatch Defends Doctor Strange 2 Amid LGBTQ Ban (The Direct)

Doctor Strange 2's leading man called the Saudi Arabian request to remove an America Chavez scene an "expected disappointment."

Beyond the insensitivity of censoring LGBTQIA+ themes, it outright changes the characters and consequently the continuity. We’ve come to know from those repressive regimes that their lack of tolerance is exclusionary to people who deserve to be, not only included, but celebrated for who they are and made to feel part of a society and a culture and not punished for their sexuality. Chavez's LGBTQIA+ lineage from the comics will also be featured in the film, which stirred controversy overseas. In the comics, Chavez possesses the unique ability to travel through the Multiverse via her star portals. While Chavez is a Marvel Cinematic Universe freshman, she has been prominently featured on Marvel Comics pages over the past decade. The film will continue the long-running stories of Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange and Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff, while also launching fan-favorite rookie characters like Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez.

Benedict Cumberbatch Expected Doctor Strange 2 to Be Banned in ... (CBR)

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Benedict Cumberbatch expressed his disappointment regarding the film's ban in certain countries.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see the titular Master of the Mystic Arts embark on a journey across different universes. It feels truly out of step with everything that we’ve experienced as a species, let alone where we’re at globally more as a culture, but frankly, it’s just even more reason why this isn’t tokenism to include an LGBTQ+ community member." "It is, I’m afraid, an expected disappointment," said Cumberbatch. "We’ve come to know from those repressive regimes that their lack of tolerance is exclusionary to people who deserve to be not only included, but celebrated for who they are and made to feel part of a society and a culture and not punished for their sexuality.

We still have to push for inclusion and equality and I’m very glad in a small, but on a very big canvas, Marvel and Disney are doing that.” We’ve come to know from those repressive regimes that their lack of tolerance is exclusionary to people who deserve to be, not only included, but celebrated for who they are and made to feel part of a society and a culture and not punished for their sexuality. And I wish it wasn’t. I wish we could be having a normalized conversation about this where it wasn’t an issue but we’re not.

While fans all over the world are counting down the days until the May 4 (so soon!) release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness aka Doctor ...

Even though both Disney and Marvel stand to lose some money over their decision, they’re likely to gain new followers due to their commitment to stand up to the bullies and fight for what’s right. Citing their “lack of tolerance,” Cumberbatch championed the LGBTQ+ community stating that he believed they shouldn’t just be “included” in the cinematic universe, but also “celebrated” for their braveness of being their truest selves. Countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait are banning the film over its inclusion of LGBTQ+ character, America Chavez, who will be played by Xochitl Gomez. And with fans in these countries sure to be bummed, they’re in good company.
