Champions League and Europa League: semi-final previews and ... (The Guardian)

Team news and tactics for City v Real, Liverpool v Villarreal, RB Leipzig v Rangers and West Ham v Eintracht Frankfurt.

Centre-back Obite Evan Ndicka is suspended following his dismissal in the second leg win at Barcelona this month, while Kristijan Jakic is also banned for the trip to London. Tuta is available following a ban of his own and should deputise for Ndicka in Eintracht’s three-man backline. Djibril Sow returned from injury off the bench against Hoffenheim on Saturday, so should cover for Jakic in the middle of the park. Emery has an able deputy for the striker in Arnaut Danjuma, who scored both goals in that 2-0 win over Valencia and has scored against Juventus and Bayern Munich in the Champions League this season. He won the Europa League with Villarreal last season and his team has already seen off Juventus and Bayern Munich in the Champions League this year. That depends on Aaron Ramsey’s fitness, however, after the Welshman missed the win over Motherwell. His presence would be a huge boost for Rangers. Filip Helander, Ianis Hagi and Nnamdi Ofoborh are all absent. Tedesco has revitalised their season but Rangers can take heart from the fact that RB Leipzig have won only two of their last seven home games. Liverpool did the double over Spanish opponents in the group stage, beating Atlético Madrid home and away, and they are strong favourites against Villarreal, who are seventh in La Liga. Liverpool may be without Roberto Firmino but their squad now has the depth to cope without one of their regular front three. They have won their last four games in La Liga to all but clinch the title; they are 15 points clear of Barcelona and Sevilla with five games to play, and will be crowned champions if they avoid defeat to Espanyol on Saturday. Federico Valverde played both legs against Chelsea on the right wing and should join Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior on the frontline, with Marco Asensio and Rodrygo available from the bench if required. After their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool this month, City have just the Champions League and Premier League to focus on. CJ Egan-Riley has experience in the Champions League, though the teenager’s sole appearance came against Sporting when the two-legged affair was over as a contest.

Champions League semi-final power rankings as Premier League ... (Mirror.co.uk)

The fact City haven't won the Champions League under Guardiola is a slight concern too, it remains to be seen how much scar tissue remains from their defeat to Chelsea last year. Klopp's previous success in this competition can also give Liverpool an edge. There is not much separating Liverpool and City but on paper, they have a clear path to the final as long as they don't underestimate Villarreal. It's a toss-up between City and Liverpool just like it is in the Premier League title race, but Jurgen Klopp's men have a slight advantage given their draw with Villarreal as they have a seemingly easier route to the final. They might not have the same firepower as Liverpool and Man City but their pedigree in this tournament means they are not far behind them. The resources Real Madrid, Manchester City and Liverpool have at their disposal compared to the Spanish side are night and day and it's hard to see how they can beat two of these three sides to go all the way.

The Premier League's title challengers are in contention to win European football's prize but will have to overcome Spanish opposition to reach the final.

Pep Guardiola’s side are renowned for the quality of their football, but they demonstrated their grit and resilience to overcome Atletico in the previous round. David Alaba has been an inspired signing at the other end of the pitch. On each occasion, the trophy was won by a Spanish club, with Real Madrid defeating La Liga rivals Valencia 3-0 in 2000 and Barcelona overcoming 10-man Arsenal 2-1 in 2006.

UCL: Will it be all-English or all-Spanish Champions League final? (Premium Times)

There is a probability that the UCL final in May could be contested by two teams from the same country.

While the UCL title is the only trophy in view for Villarreal, Liverpool can sweep the board with a quadruple. Combative Villarreal midfielder Etienne Capoue acknowledged the strength of the Premier League but added, “the Champions League is something else. The two losses were to Manchester United in the group stage. “The pressure is similar for both teams. Many pundits (biased toward the English game) are looking forward to another clash between Pep Guardiola’s City team against Klopp’s unrelenting Liverpool team. But both Carlo Ancelotti and Unai Emery have some English connections. On Tuesday, the UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-finals will kick off.
