Even though Erling Haaland wasn’t playing they still have players who can do damage and I think the way Rangers went to Dortmund and played them off the park, they definitely deserved to win.” “He’s a fantastic player. “Dortmund have normally got more possession than their opponents, they are an attacking side at home due to the supporters and due to the way they play. “You cannot underestimate Glasgow Rangers. They really deserved to go through in the last round against Braga with the way they played and if they get into the final, I think anything is possible as it’s a one-off game. “They struggle a little bit at home because they always try to win the game at home and they are always open to counterattacks. “If Rangers play the way they did against Dortmund, I think there’s a chance to win especially in Leipzig.

RB Leipzig vs Rangers – LIVE updates (Scottish Daily Record)

It's the big one for Rangers as they travel to Leipzig for their Europa League semi-final first leg.

The second leg is going to be massive. A bottle of wine in your room for arrival? I think if they can stay in the game, stay in the tie, it’s a two-legged tie, so I don’t think you can be naïve to think that you need to win it in the one game. How do Rangers stop Christopher Nkunku? Ibrox won't faze RB after silencing Yellow Wall I think there’s the excitement about how well they’ve done and I think they need to believe they can go there and get a result. The Kelty Hearts boss was part of the Ibrox club's famous run to the UEFA Cup final in 2008 and they are aiming to reach that frontier for the first time since. Breakfast in bed? A balcony? There was the 2016 Scottish Cup final defeat, the loss to Celtic in the final of the Betfred Cup and finishing runners-up to their rivals in the league. But Rangers found it tough to get over that final hurdle of winning a major trophy after they were sent to the bottom league. It's the day Rangers have been waiting 14 years for as they get set to run out in a European semi-final once again.

The Hoops skipper isn't ready to declare the race for the Scottish crown despite a six point lead and massive goal difference advantage.

But we also have to stay calm and commit to the way we want to play. That's what we'll do at the weekend. That's the full focus. We can't think like that or speak like that. Asked if the Hoops players already viewed themselves as title winners, captain McGregor cautioned: "No, no. "And that in turn shows the level we're at and the level we're reaching.

It was a tough shift for him up top at times especially in the first half where service was hard to come by. He was denied by impressive Hearts stopper McFarlane on the rebound early on while he also won the ball back and laid one off to create a chance for Wilson which was denied. The 17-year-old showed a great attitude as he was positive in his movements, driving at the Rangers defence at any opportunity. The youngster got his name on the scoresheet with a spectacular one-touch volley to put his side two in front. He caused several problems for the Jambos' back line with his movement and penetrating runs and appears to have a bright future ahead at Ibrox. It was a great advert for youth football at Hampden and there were a few stand out performances for both sides - with names you are sure to see breaking throughout to the first team in the coming months and years.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side are in Germany to face the Bundesliga giants.

“I keep saying to many people, European nights under the floodlights at Ibrox is just a totally different atmosphere. "They had a great performance in Germany previously against Dortmund but I honestly feel that will have to be equalled at least for Rangers to have a chance of making the final in Seville." I’ve seen big teams come and big players come and be in awe of the atmosphere. It's set to be a brilliant atmosphere with thousands of Rangers fans in attendance! “The mindset of Giovanni and the boys will be to make sure they go over there and come back with at least a positive result. However, he feels Leipzig will be the toughest game they've faced and thinks they need a repeat of the 4-2 performance in Dortmund to stand a chance of progression. Ally McCoist has been "pinching" himself at the thought of watching Rangers in a European semi-final. Ibrox has been a fortress for Rangers in Europe and they'll be hoping to return from Germany with the tie alive, ahead of the second leg in Glasgow. Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the fifth manager to lead Rangers into the last four of a European tournament. Rangers are in Germany to face RB Leipzig in the semi-final of the Europa League. Rangers famously reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 2008. But the Light Blues won't want their European adventure to stop as they eye a trip to Seville for the final in May.

Minute-by-minute report: Will either team take control of this tie in Germany? Join Nick Ames.

Tonight they go again, in this not-particularly-new-fangled Europa League of ours – and they’re tantalisingly close to making history again. Back then, they edged past Fiorentina in the Uefa Cup, only to fall short against Zenit at the last. So at long as there are no disasters tonight, the Ibrox crowd may well be able to see them home next time out. Our players believe, they’ve trained well, they look very focused and we’re going to play in a great atmosphere against a good team. Nkunku goes down in the box as he tries to spin Goldson, but tumbles a bit too easily. Rangers’ fans have been making themselves seen and heard in town all afternoon, in tremendous number.

Match Report: RB Leipzig 1-0 Rangers (Rangers Football Club)

RANGERS will have a one goal deficit to again overcome if they are to reach the UEFA Europa League final following a 1-0 defeat here in Leipzig tonight.

From there, the winger showed super skill to burrow a path into the area before flashing an effort across the face of goal. Rangers did well to clear the initial effort, but the ball dropped for Angelino 25-yards from goal to send a sweet volley past McGregor and into the back of the net with four minutes left. As was to probably be expected, the home side began with the bulk of possession, with no real chances of note until the 17th minute, when a bit of a loose header from Barisic presented the ball to Dani Olmo to cross for Christopher Nkunu in the 18-yard box, but he dallied on the ball and McGregor blocked well.

Rangers looked on course to earn a draw before Angeliño's late goal gave RB Leipzig a 1-0 first-leg victory in the Europa League semi-final.

Leipzig appealed in vain for a penalty as Barisic clashed with Henrichs. The Germans needed something unorthodox, which was soon to arrive. Cue a wild celebration in front of the home dugout. In 16 earlier European matches this season, Rangers had not endured a spell without possession as was the case in the first quarter of this match. The change was immediately effective, Tavernier seeing a shot at goal deflected for a corner. Leipzig were jolted into action; Tavernier provided a desperate block from Angeliño’s half-volley after a spell of pinball inside the Rangers penalty area. RB Leipzig and Rangers had been embroiled in a taut encounter which endorsed time-honoured theories about the mundane nature of semi-finals.

A 1-0 defeat at the hands of RB Leipzig in Germany keeps Rangers' hopes of a Europa League final spot attainable ahead of next Thursday's second leg.

Leipzig were limited throughout and the tie remains alive for the return leg. The hosts made 830 passes to the visitors 368 and that possessional-dominance is shown in both pass maps. Contrastingly, Rangers hardly applied any pressure in the opposition half. Review of both shot maps demonstrates just how difficult it was for the hosts to create openings. Van Bronckhorst’s side changed shape at the break. If not for Angelino’s late strike, the visitors would’ve carried out their plan to perfection.
