Daniel Jebbison is recalled to the Blades squad in Sharp’s absence and takes his place on the bench. United are sixth in the table with two games left but have teams breathing down their necks as they look to nick a play-off place from Paul Heckingbottom’s men. The striker had only just returned from a hamstring injury in United’s last game against Cardiff City, before sustaining the injury in training ahead of the crunch Championship clash.

At this stage of the season, that is a huge blow. United will start the day in sixth, just two points clear of seventh, but arrive looking to increase that gap to a healthy five points. With United kicking off this weekend's fixtures a day before the rest, victory would leave them all in must-win scenarios tomorrow.

Sheffield United moved one step closer to the play-offs after coming from behind to beat QPR 3-1 on Friday evening in Mark Warburton's final home game as R'

It took something special for United to finally take the lead. But the arrival of the Scotsman did little to stop the flood of Blades attacks with Berge spurning a good chance to take the lead in the 67th minute when he sent his volley wide of the target after peeling off into space in the centre of the box. That all changed in the 31st minute as Austin connected with Adomah’s floated cross to nod the ball across a motionless Wes Foderingham and into the corner with what was the hosts’ first real chance of the match.

Even then, they will still need Sheffield United to drop points against Fulham on the final weekend of the season to have any chance of making the play-offs. Had a good chance to put United ahead from a deep corner but couldn't get it on target and judging by his reaction, he knew he should have scored - or at least tested the goalkeeper. Couldn't do enough to prevent Austin heading home QPR's opener, although the home striker did have the run on him before he headed past Foderingham just past the half-hour mark. Such an underrated and valuable player who can slot in anywhere and do a job

United scored twice in the second half to turn the match on its head and secure a well deserved and crucial victory.

Had United's best chance in the first half with an effort comfortably saved and was unlucky not to find the net when his header came back off the post. Moved into all the areas that the QPR defenders did not want to go and drove United forward. Fancied this one right from the off and was busy, energetic and forever probing, getting on the ball. But going forward he picked up some really good positions on the overlap and was a great outlet. Pushing on and getting up inside the area. Was unlucky with a header soon after the interval that was tipped wide at full stretch by Mahoney but the keeper could do nothing to stop the bullet header that put United in front.

QPR 1 Sheffield United 3: Blades throw down gauntlet to play-off rivals (Yorkshire Post)

There are lots of ways to win a football match. For Sheffield United last night it was the half-time team-talk that did it.

Austin ran in and got above Basham to head in the game’s first effort on target. Robinson added a second and the Blades withstood a frantic finale which saw Jimmy Dunne hit the crossbar. Within a minute, Gibbs-White forced the ball goalwards at a corner, only to see it cleared. Sander Berge’s shot was blocked but Iliman Ndiaye pounced for his third goal in four games. The Blades were the better side in possession but dropped their guard for a few seconds and were punished. “We weren’t ruthless and didn’t have enough efforts on goal and that killer instinct.”

As with all matches, there has been dialogue between the club and the police, local authority and the EFL to ensure it is a safe environment at Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium and any pitch incursion will prevent the lap of appreciation taking place.

Conor Hourihane then put the icing on the cake with a lovely cushioned volley within seconds of coming on in added-on time from Berge's pass to put this result beyond doubt. “For when I was managing my first experience in non-league, then with Halifax, to Oxford, to Northampton, to Sheffield United. Of course, there is one club there that is a different relationship but I’m not giving less than what I gave there. There is always going to be one connection to a football club that you supported as a boy. Steven Gerrard's now at Villa and he's been at a huge club like Rangers, but there is always going to be that affinity [with Liverpool]. There is always going to be that affection towards your football club and there are relationships and affections ingrained into the football clubs you work with and I’ve been incredibly passionate for all the teams. Of course, you can’t take away the history of my career and I wouldn’t want to but this is something we are looking at and we want to be successful regardless here and everything else goes out the window. Chris Wilder says there are no mixed emotions as he looks to make the play-offs with Middlesbrough, potentially at Sheffield United's expense.

The Blades opened up a five-point gap on nearest rivals Middlesbrough ahead of today's afternoon kick-offs.

He added: "It's how we want to play. "No they won't. We have had a lot of stuff not go our way," he explained. We are in this position because we have earned it. And whether it's playing out of position or playing while injured, a lot has been thrown at both the management team and players since the turn of the year. Yet, his side produced a stunning response to Charlie Austin's first half opener with a 'relentless' second half display that more than shone a light on their play-off credentials. Paul Heckingbottom was rightly proud of his players for the manner of their thrilling second half comeback at Queens Park Rangers last night.

All Sheffield United can do is wait… (The Athletic)

Sheffield United and Paul Heckingbottom's injury hit squad are on the brink of an unlikely play-off place, belief is growing...

At times, it was unplayable and some within the club believe this has been a leading factor in the flurry of muscle injuries. In Norwood’s case, that runners-up spot completed a hat-trick of promotions to the Premier League in as many seasons after previous successes with Brighton and Fulham. United will need plenty more of that providing a play-off place is sealed at some stage over the next week, not least in overcoming history. The manager, for one, is certainly relaxed. Heckingbottom has been fortunate to inherit a group brimming with so much experience. But United have certainly done their hopes a power of good, courtesy of a second-half display that must now be the standard for whatever lies ahead. Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers and Millwall can now afford no slip-ups. Whatever the cause — and a review is underway — to take the club from the lower echelons of the Championship to the verge of the play-offs is no mean feat. It was a test. Sheer desire went a long, long way. Hopes of a top-four finish — and the opportunity to play the all-important second leg of their semi-final at Bramall Lane — had gone during the week, when Nottingham Forest won away to Fulham. Only time will tell in terms of whether a return to the capital, this time Wembley, on Sunday, May 29 really is this team’s destiny.

With last night's 3-1 win at QPR extending the gap to seventh-placed Middlesbrough to five points ahead of this afternoon's matches, Sharp will be hoping his Sheffield United team-mates can buy him some extra time to recover by securing a spot in the end-of-season play-offs.
