Gillingham will be playing League 2 football after suffering a final-day defeat at the hands of Rotherham United - who are promoted.

With the defence more vulnerable, Chapman had to be on top form again to save from Wiles as Rotherham looked to finish the job. Ben Reeves did find the target with a free-kick but goalkeeper Viktor Johnsson was equal to it. Max Ehmer also went close to scoring at the far post from Ben Reeves’ free-kick. The Gills had a go second half but Rotherham scored a late second. Rotherham went infront from a 34th minute corner. Thompson was so close to picking out Olly Lee free in the box for the Gills but Barlaser got a toe on the ball to take it out of his path.

Gillingham look to keep their League One status as they host Rotherham, who are eyeing automatic promotion to the Championship.

Dan Barlaser stepped up and beat Aaron Chapman from the spot. He's also been durable, starting all 44 of the Millers' games. A fifth came a minute from time as Ogbene rounded off the scoring as he left Chapman with no chance following a mesmerizing strike. The lead was doubled on 59 minutes as Rotherham was awarded a penalty after Michael Ihiekwe was hauled down. A long punt upfield wasn't dealt with properly and Freddie Ladapo was on hand to bundle home, leveling the match seven minutes from halftime. Midfielder Stuart O'Keefe will undergo a late fitness test for a calf problem, but is expected to be in the starting lineup.

It was the first of a hat-trick of saves from the midfielder. Ihiekwe headed a corner straight at the goalkeeper. The job was far from done. It was by no means the first example of crowd trouble at Rotherham this season, unfortunately. The first half was a game of defence versus attack and it needed two defenders to make the breakthrough. Sadly, some of the credit the players did their club was undone by morons who ran on the field at full-time not to celebrate but throw punches, bottles and even a plastic steward's seat.

REPORT | Gillingham 0 v 2 Rotherham (Rotherham United)

Rarmani Edmonds-Green and sub Georgie Kelly, in his first taste of Millers action, were the heroes on a sun-kissed Kent afternoon, as Paul Warne's side kept ...

A hopeful ball was played into the corner, but Ogbene was not giving up the chase, and he nipped the pocket of a Gillingham defender, before weighing up his options to pick the perfect pass with Kelly, in support, and the Irish forward kept his nerve, to steer a lovely finish into the corner of the goal, from the edge of the box, past a motionless Chapman. The Millers were going for a season defining second goal and it almost came when Ogbene and Edmonds-Green combined superbly as the former darted into the box, before clipping a cross which Wiles looked to turn goalwards, but again Chapman was his equal with a fine save, before the hosts scrambled the ball clear. The Millers players, who were roared on by a two-thousand plus strong travelling contingent, were giving their all for the cause, and Smith epitomised this, by going through the pain barrier for his side, but his race was run when he was unable to continue and the Millers fans got their first glimpse of January summer recruit Georgie Kelly, as his replacement. Ogbene was proving a thorn in Gillingham’s side and the Republic of Ireland flyer skipped past the attentions of O’Keefe to burst into the box, before expertly finding the unmarked run of Smith, but with many expecting the net to ripple, the Millers top scorer could not get his feet right, and he steered the ball wide when it looked to easier to score. The Millers had a scare when Wiles was adjudged to have bundled over Ben Reeves on the edge of the box, and the Gillingham man dusted himself down to curl a free-kick over the Rotherham wall, but Johansson was well-placed to pluck his effort out of the Kent sky. After forcing a corner, Barlaser, a superb exponent of a set piece, caressed a lovely ball into the box and Ihiekwe rose highest to keep the ball alive in the six-yard box, and Edmonds-Green was the sharpest to react, by prodding the ball into the heart of the Gillingham net.

Ben Wiles came close to scoring for the visitors with a diving header. The ball was played across the penalty area, and Smith was able to get onto the end of it with plenty of time and space. Ben Thompson almost brought Gills level on the stroke of half-time. However, Jack Tucker came bravely sliding in to block the Rotherham man’s attempt.

ROTHERHAM United will be a Championship side next season after clinching automatic promotion from League One with a win at Gillingham this afternoon.

Wiles had a shot saved and Ogbene headed the rebound over as the Millers played towards their bank of supporters. The Millers were managing to weather a severe test and Wiles unleashed a piledriver in the hope of easing the tension but Chapman pulled off a flying stop. Warne's men had to weather a spell of Gills pressure at the start of the second half before they broke out for Ogbene to fire wide. Gillingham nown had to come out and attack and the Millers were served a warning right on half-time when Ben Thompson clattered the bar for the home side with a chance he should have put away. The Millers were on the front foot from the start and Ben Wiles and Michael Ihiekwe sent headers wide of the Gillingham goal within the first seven minutes. Rotherham's recent wobble became a thing of the past as hundreds of Millers fans raced on to the pitch in celebration at the final whistle.
